🔥 “Supply chains are under threat from climate change, philanthropy offers a way for businesses to bolster support for those farmers and suppliers dealing with climate threats.” It was great to be at Blue Earth Summit in London last week, and meet change-makers and businesses that are taking action for climate and nature. 📣 A highlight was the panel event that Impatience Earth Deputy CEO @Aditi Shah joined, alongside speakers Estelle Gayout, James Reed CBE and Catherine Bryan. We talked about how corporates can use philanthropy as a “golden ticket” to take bold climate action, build resilient supply chains, and unlock funding from other budgets to catalyse innovation. 🌱There are many examples of meaningful corporate climate philanthropy to learn from. During the panel, Estelle talked about the Farmer Innovation Fund, and we’re proud to be supporting innocent drinks to de-risk the transition to regenerative agriculture. It was also good to connect with Tony's Chocolonely and learn about their open chain approach to change cocoa production in West Africa, and House of Hackney's decision to appoint Mother Nature & Future Generations to their board of directors. 💙Thanks again to the Blue Earth team for inviting us to be part of this event! 🌱 Curious about UK climate funding? Check out our Disney-inspired takeaways from EFN's latest ‘Where the Green Grants Went’ report! 👇
Strategic Content Specialist 👩🏻💻 | Climate Champion 🌱 | Using Words and Ideas to Drive Purposeful Change 🌎
❗Funders: are you feeling motivated to support climate action, and curious about the UK funding landscape? Read on for our Disney-themed takeaways from the 9th edition of Environmental Funders Network’s ‘Where the Green Grants Went’ report on UK foundation giving. 🌎 A whole new world (of philanthropic giving): environmental grants nearly tripled between 2018/19 and 2021/22, reaching £606.5 million. Environmental funding now constitutes 8.5% of total UK foundation giving, up from 5.8% - but this is still far below what is needed to address the challenge of the climate crisis. 👠 In the UK just 6% of environmental funding goes to overlooked but critical ‘Cinderella’ issues, like waste and toxic pollution. This represents an opportunity for funders looking to fill a gap. 🦸♀️ The Incredibles: a small number of funders (10 foundations) account for 78% of all environmental foundation giving. The average grant size from these top funders exceeds £1 million. We’d like to see more big fish swimming in the environmental grantmaking pool alongside them! 🐻 The bare necessities: 50% of funded environmental organisations in the report received grants of less than £10,000. We were particularly concerned to read that 1,258 grants awarded to environmental causes were worth less than £3,600, a threshold at which point the cost of applying for a grant may be greater than the value of the grant. To these funders we say: if you are not in a position to make larger grants, please consider pooled funds (see below!) 🧑🏻🚀 You’ve got a friend in me: Pooled and collaborative funds have increasingly become a mechanism for effective grantmaking, whereby groups of donors pool their resources together, with grants deployed across an agreed thematic area, avoiding duplication of effort. As the EFN report states: “Don’t fund alone”. 😈 Every Disney hero has an adversary, and the report drew our attention to the active philanthropic opponents of climate action on the ‘radical right’. While this philanthropic opposition is well documented in the United States, with notable examples like Paul Weyrich and the Heritage Foundation, there are also active climate opponents in the UK and elsewhere that are powered by philanthropy. The report encourages us to consider what we can learn from these ‘radical right’ funders, whose risk-averse and movement-focused approach has been extremely successful. 🌊 As Moana sang: “No-one knows how far I’ll go”. Our message to funders: there’s an ocean of incredible climate solutions out there and we’re just skimming the surface. Get in touch with @Impatience Earth if you’re motivated today to ramp up your philanthropic giving. Thanks to Environmental Funders Network for their hard work bringing these critical insights to light and for mentioning Impatience Earth and other climate advisors in the report, available here: https://lnkd.in/g5uaVg5r

🌍 Exciting news from COP29! 🌍 We’re proud to share that the Arab Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change (APCCC) has officially launched today in Baku. We are pleased to have joined a Working Group of foundations in the region to shape this commitment which brings a uniquely Arab perspective to tackling climate change. The Arab region is warming nearly twice as quickly as the global average, and experiencing the climate fallout faster 🔥 This first-ever regional commitment represents a critical step in addressing the impacts of climate change in a region disproportionately vulnerable to its effects. Bridging these gaps calls for impactful, coordinated philanthropic responses that inspire collaboration and collective engagement across the sector. The commitment aims to mobilise resources, and bring regional cooperation, joining a global movement of over 800 foundations working to address the climate emergency as part of the #PhilanthropyforClimate movement. We’re excited about the next phase where we’ll be working alongside other working group members to develop a guide on how to implement the Commitment and co-create a brighter, more sustainable future for the Arab region and its communities. Have you ever thought about the link between the care economy and climate change? 🔍 In our Impatience Earth 'Easy Digests' series, we’ve been exploring critical themes at the intersection of societal needs and environmental sustainability. In this edition, written by Maya Patra, we’re delving into the complex relationship between climate change and the care economy. 🫂 The global climate crisis worsens women’s and girls’ disproportionate responsibility for unpaid care, particularly in low-income communities. Climate events like droughts, floods, and resource shortages increase the time women spend fulfilling household needs, reducing opportunities for education and employment. 🩺 The burden extends to health, where fragile food systems, disease outbreaks, and extreme weather events complicate caregiving roles, exposing caregivers to greater risks. For example, water scarcity forces women to walk longer distances to collect water, impacting their health and safety. 💡 However, effective care systems can build resilience against climate impacts. By reducing the burden of unpaid care work, we empower women to engage in climate action and decision-making. Addressing both climate change and care together can help foster equitable and sustainable communities. ❓What does this mean for climate philanthropy❓ Funders have a unique role to play. By applying the ‘5 Rs of unpaid care work’—recognise, reduce, redistribute, reward, and represent—they can support initiatives that enhance climate resilience while easing the care burden on women. Supporting organisations such as the Mahila Housing Trust, Climate Resilience for All, and Enda Sahel that empower women and focus on care-sensitive solutions can amplify positive outcomes for both people and the planet. You can dive deeper into our analysis in the full Easy Digest on climate and the care economy here: https://lnkd.in/d8gyQB85 Check out our other Easy Digests over at Impatience Earth, where we explore how strategic philanthropy can tackle the intertwined challenges of climate change, gender equality, and care work. 🎺 Impatience Earth report alert! Parts of the UK just experienced the wettest September on record, with many homes and roads left submerged under water. Climate change means UK winters will become wetter, making flooding more likely across the country. We need to take action! At Impatience Earth we've been working with a number of UK based foundations looking to *embed* climate action into their place-based work with communities. ❓One of the first questions we ask is: who will be most impacted by increasing climate hazards? The answer: people who are already made vulnerable in society. That means our children, our elderly or disabled family members and neighbours, those of us from racially minoritised communities and families and individuals living on low-incomes. 📈 How are they impacted? We’ve learned there is a significant gap in #data and therefore understanding of how communities are being affected by climate change. 👣 To learn more about how climate change impacts marginalised communities, and how it can better support them, Impact on Urban Health launched its Climate, Health, and Community Fund in 2022. This funding was targeted to support Black and Brown-led organisations addressing health and climate issues as part of their community work, and run in collaboration with Do it Now Now. 💡I’m pleased to share this report from Impatience Earth that offers insights and recommendations for the Impact on Urban Health team - as well as other place-based funders - to embed climate justice into community-led work. It’s also an opportunity to hear from community partners in their own words: 💬 “for the people (we) work with, the main priorities are housing and the cost-of-living crisis – climate change isn’t a priority (for them).” 💬 “...the climate crisis is a consequence of the systems of power and domination in which we live, in the same way that racism and the destruction of communities. In that way there is no way we can organise about climate change without organising against racial injustice.” 💬 “...we're all coming from African and Caribbean backgrounds. When our relatives or friends' houses get destroyed back home, we are the ones that are sending money down to help them….” 📖 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dHQFFcaK Olamide Raheem Michael Parsons Rosine Uwineza --- 🔎 About us: Impatience Earth’s team of experienced climate and philanthropy experts provide *pro-bono* advisory services to corporates, foundations and high net worth individuals that meet our criteria for impact. 🌎 Funders: if you’re interested in finding out more about how we can help you on your climate journey, or simply need a sounding board for the work you’re doing in this space, please get in touch at sarah@impatience.earth or via our website here https://impatience.earth/.
