  • Listen to our very own Luís Neves Silva and Andrew Heald, hosted by Shauna Deidre Matkovich of The ForestLink, as they share how at iNovaland®, we view value in Forest Landscape Restoration through a different lens—one that positions communities as stewards of their lands and forests. They dive deep into the multiple dimensions of how our projects in Ghana and Brazil adopt unique models, viewing project design and implementation as an ecosystem of collaboration influenced by both internal and external factors. Plus, they explore how opportunities like carbon finance create additional value for local communities and smallholder farmers. Don’t miss out, listen now! https://lnkd.in/ePNJhW_9 Feel free to reach out if you would like more information. #ForestInvestment #iNovaland #RestoringWithPeople

Integrating sustainability into profitable forestry natural capital investments

Rethinking #Risk and #Value in Forest Landscape Restoration Join me today, as I chat with Luís Neves Silva, CEO and Andrew Heald, COO of iNovaland®. They developed a #forestlandscaperestoration model with a unique approach. In this conversation, Luís and Andrew tell me how they met through the New Generation Plantations platform and wanted to transform the insights shared through this group into one of implementation on the ground. Their forest landscape restoration model came from their experience in the #forestsector and strong networks in the project areas. Andrew and Luis describe their cornerstone projects in #Brazil and #Ghana, give insights into why they are different, and urge investors to think about risk and value in a such a way to achieve real forest resilience and a more sustainable economic model. "If we have the people living in the landscape as our key stewards of our programmes, then our projects, they are robust and resilient. We would like to think that our forests there will mature, storing a lot of carbon, being rich in biodiversity, and contributing to the wealth of the people living in that landscape." - Luís "In a rapidly changing climate, any investor needs to be - and looking at nature-based solutions or growing timber or food - you need to be comfortable with that level of risk and understand how your investment and actions can reduce that risk and increase value." - Andrew 🔗 Link to the episode 🎧 is in the comments below 👇 #ForestInvestPodcast #impactforestry #impactinvesting #forestinvestment #nbs #naturebasedsolutions

  • Growing from the Grassroots. "We understood our impact would be greater if we reached local traditional communities. Instead of spending money on contracts and administration costs, we are building partnerships with local people. Although we are there to support them, they are in charge of designing and managing the projects and the finances. That’s very empowering." -These words from Marcio Braga, FASB first cycle Coordinator, shows the significance of the FASB model. Because we know that sharing impact stories could inspire or aspire, we're thrilled to share the "FASB Growing from the Grassroots" report, showcasing the impact of our first three-year phase. Between the years 2021-2024, the FASB project invested nearly €3 million in 45 projects, empowering local communities to take the lead in restoring their forests and landscapes. We provided financial and technical support which resulted in remarkable achievements: ✔️ Community Empowerment: Local communities are taking ownership of projects, driving sustainable change. ✔️ Biodiversity Conservation: Critical ecosystems are being restored, safeguarding biodiversity. ✔️ Climate Mitigation: Tree planting and soil restoration all contribute to carbon sequestration and climate action.   Luís Neves Silva, CEO of iNovaland reflected, “We’ve succeeded in having a good number of projects coming from communities that have never received financial resources or technical support before. For many, it’s the first time they’ve developed a project of their own, which they are responsible for. This is where I see FASB’s added value. The biggest impact may be in giving people ideas of what they can do. It is difficult to anticipate but exciting to imagine how it will develop.”   Read the full report to learn more: https://lnkd.in/dmW9g48D #iNovaland #Fasb #bottom-up #projects #environmental #social #landscapes

  • 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: There's no doubt that investment in landscapes and forest restoration holds immense potential to heal our planet and empower communities. This means that true restoration is also about respecting traditions, uplifting Indigenous knowledge, and addressing inequalities, while still being guided by science. #FASB project in the south of Bahia and the north of Espírito Santo exemplifies this ethos. Through an incubation and acceleration programme for socio-environmental projects, FASB mobilises local communities to create sustainable food production and farming solutions and green nature-positive entrepreneurship. One standout initiative we will be working on is creating a 500km ecological corridor in Bahia, restoring native forests while honouring ancestral knowledge. In our initiatives, we have our key partners, the Quilombola communities. The #Quilombola communities, descendants of enslaved Africans who resisted oppression and established their own settlements, have a rich history of resilience, self-determination, and stewardship of the land. Despite their vital role in land preservation and restoration, they often face structural discrimination, including barriers to accessing resources and funding for land restoration. However, funding programmes frequently impose requirements that these communities cannot meet and fail to offer the small-scale funding they require. Yet, when supported, Quilombola communities demonstrate extraordinary capacity to restore ecosystems and honour their heritage. 𝗔𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗹𝘇𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗼, 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗿ã𝗼, 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁: "𝐹𝑜𝑟 𝑢𝑠, 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑄𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑜𝑚𝑏𝑜𝑙𝑎 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑅𝑖𝑏𝑒𝑖𝑟ã𝑜, 𝑏𝑒𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐹𝐴𝑆𝐵 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑑𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑚 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑒. 𝑊𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑓𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑠 𝑜𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑑, 𝑤𝑒 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑒 𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑣𝑒𝑔𝑒𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑜𝑖𝑙𝑠, ℎ𝑜𝑛𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑜𝑢𝑟 ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑙 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑠." What we have learnt is that sometimes, big changes start small. We will continue working with Indigenous communities by ensuring that restoration efforts do more than regenerate the environment—they empower communities to thrive and preserve their heritage. As a Circular Bioeconomy Alliance (CBA) member, we were delighted that our Chief of Operations, Andrew Heald, had the opportunity to represent us as iNovaland® at St James’s Palace last Thursday. His Majesty King Charles III joined this launch event. The event was attended by different experts, scientists, business leaders, investors and representatives of indigenous communities. Andrew highlighted our Atebubu and Wiase Forest Landscape Restoration project, the pioneering project under the CBA as a "living lab" for community and ecological resilience. The project is integrating natural forest restoration and farmer-led agroforestry systems. Andrew noted, "It was exciting to join the event and share the success stories and challenges with other project developers". Indeed, ever since we joined CBA, we found a community that provides good opportunities to exchange knowledge and develop best practices to ensure successful community-led regenerative landscape projects. We extend our gratitude to CBA and AstraZeneca for their continued support, and to Marc Palahí and his team for organizing such a distinguished event. As active members of the CBA, we are more inspired than ever to lead the way in delivering solutions that positively impact people, nature, and climate. • 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: 𝗣𝗲𝗲𝗿-𝘁𝗼-𝗣𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 In the Atebubu-Wiase Forest Landscape Restoration Project, we're witnessing how true change indeed happens when communities are at the heart of the solution. That’s why we’re using an approach called "Lead Farmers" – a simple, powerful model that equips local leaders to guide and teach their peers about sustainable farming practices and agroforestry. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀: • Lead Farmers as Community Leaders • Each community has a designated Lead Farmer, a local leader who is trained to mobilise, educate, and support others in restoration efforts. • Lead Farmers receive training, resources, and support to make them effective in their roles. 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸, 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁-𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆-𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆-𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. We explored what makes a good leader, discussing key qualities such as communication, resilience, and empathy. We defined the roles and responsibilities of Lead Farmers, emphasizing their work in mobilising community members, sharing knowledge, and supporting agroforestry practices. Practical sessions on data management introduced simple ways to track progress, including monitoring tree health, growth, and yields, while record-keeping and monitoring guidance helped Lead Farmers maintain basic records and assess the project’s impact. The training wasn’t lectures – it was filled with group activities, energizers, and discussions that encouraged everyone to share ideas and work through challenges together. Our goal is to make community-led restoration sustainable, adaptable, and accessible to communities with communities for communities. Progress Update: Beyond Trees! At iNovaland, we envision a prosperous, sustainable future. Our mission is clear: restore and regenerate degraded forests and landscapes. Guided by three core principles—ecosystem integrity, inclusive stakeholder engagement, and support for green growth and socioeconomic development—we’re proud to share our recent milestones and the positive impact we’re making together. 1️⃣ Maintaining and Restoring Ecosystem Integrity Healthy ecosystems are the foundation of a sustainable planet, supporting biodiversity and climate resilience. We’re restoring natural landscapes, mitigating climate change, and preserving the delicate web of life that sustains us. Hectares Under Restoration: 6,923 hectares, including: ✔️ 3,836 hectares of natural forest: Reforestation with native species regenerates biodiversity, provides wildlife habitat, and enhances water and soil health.  ✔️ 3,039 hectares of regenerative agriculture and agroforestry: Supporting 1,300+ farmers to integrate sustainable farming and tree planting, revitalizing soil, boosting carbon storage, and enhancing livelihoods in harmony with nature. Trees Planted: 6,254,254 native, indigenous, fruit, and cash crop trees. Each tree aids in carbon capture, soil rehabilitation, and offers wildlife habitat, improving community well-being. 2️⃣ Ensuring Inclusion and Stakeholder Engagement Our restoration work isn’t just about the land; it’s about people too. We prioritize engaging communities and stakeholders, ensuring our initiatives adapt to local needs. Collaborative action fosters sustainable, lasting solutions. Stakeholder Engagement: 4,455 individuals have actively participated in multi-stakeholder platforms. These collaborations—across government, private sector, community leaders, and civil society—help tailor solutions to each landscape, fostering trust and commitment. 3️⃣ Supporting Green Growth and Socioeconomic Development True sustainability empowers communities economically while enhancing ecological health. Through training and job creation, we’re providing valuable skills and opportunities to improve quality of life. Community Training: 5,682 individuals trained in agroforestry, regenerative agriculture, and fire management. This training enhances food security, promotes resilience, and builds community expertise to sustain practices beyond iNovaland’s direct involvement. We would like to thank our partners for joining us on this journey. We are deeply proud of these achievements and remain committed to expanding our impact. Every hectare restored, every tree planted, and every person engaged and empowered brings us closer to a world where people and nature thrive in harmony.
