Growing from the Grassroots. "We understood our impact would be greater if we reached local traditional communities. Instead of spending money on contracts and administration costs, we are building partnerships with local people. Although we are there to support them, they are in charge of designing and managing the projects and the finances. That’s very empowering." -These words from Marcio Braga, FASB first cycle Coordinator, shows the significance of the FASB model. Because we know that sharing impact stories could inspire or aspire, we're thrilled to share the "FASB Growing from the Grassroots" report, showcasing the impact of our first three-year phase. Between the years 2021-2024, the FASB project invested nearly €3 million in 45 projects, empowering local communities to take the lead in restoring their forests and landscapes. We provided financial and technical support which resulted in remarkable achievements: ✔️ Community Empowerment: Local communities are taking ownership of projects, driving sustainable change. ✔️ Biodiversity Conservation: Critical ecosystems are being restored, safeguarding biodiversity. ✔️ Climate Mitigation: Tree planting and soil restoration all contribute to carbon sequestration and climate action. Luís Neves Silva, CEO of iNovaland reflected, “We’ve succeeded in having a good number of projects coming from communities that have never received financial resources or technical support before. For many, it’s the first time they’ve developed a project of their own, which they are responsible for. This is where I see FASB’s added value. The biggest impact may be in giving people ideas of what they can do. It is difficult to anticipate but exciting to imagine how it will develop.” Read the full report to learn more: https://lnkd.in/dmW9g48D #iNovaland #Fasb #bottom-up #projects #environmental #social #landscapes

🌊 Could the answer to our climate challenges lie beneath the surface? Dive into Nature-Based Solutions (NbS)! 💙 I recently had the opportunity to represent Le Paysan Marin at the closing event of MaCoBioS (Marine Coastal Ecosystems Biodiversity and Services in a Changing World) at UNESCO, part of the Blue Nature-Based Solutions Week. Imagine ecosystems like mangroves, seagrasses, and oyster reefs—working as natural protectors of our coastlines, adapting to climate impacts, and generating economic benefits. These systems offer immense potential but require extensive scientific proof to demonstrate their efficiency. Here are some key takeaways and thoughts from inspiring speakers: Pierre Failler highlighted the challenges in NbS development and the importance of translating innovation into implementation. Sounds to us with Tristan Macquet - 迈克 like a call to for emergence of Marine NbS project developers to take the reins on research findings and drive impactful projects. Lucie Galinon Galinon emphasized the need for researchers and civil society to actively liaise with policymakers. Note taken! :-) Kudos to the #MPs4MPA initiative! Patricia Ricard urged us to as always think outside the box. We'll all keep in mind the 4 magic boxes between public, NGO, science, and private sectors. And our dreamland #highseasstate and its own currency. Her repeated message to investors: support small, long-term projects for sustainable impact (DGAMPA - Affaires maritimes, pêche et aquaculture) . Martin O'Connor stressed the importance o start with the scale of problems people are concerned about. Livelihood of our Coastal farmers and fishers seems like a good place to start. Fabien Boileau reminded us that we already know enough to act. Heather Matson championed private finance for nature conservation. Hails for to your non-profit banking! (and thanks showing the MBAs way into NGOs. Gilles KLEITZ reminded that scaling funding from 0.5/1000 to 1% of GDP would meet global nature targets. How can we mainstream sustainability science while keeping transaction costs manageable? Finally, we had just the time to start discussing bottom-up capacity building for policy makers with the inspiring françoise Gaill, plenty of room to follow-up on empowering seafarers to become ocean restorers. #nbs #restoration #bluefinance #blueeconomy #regenerative

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting (virtually) Michael Burton from Equator Impact. Michael is working with the Botanic Gardens Conservation International, a truly global organisations across more than 100 countries to mobilise capital and create actions that will protect and restore biodiverse areas and species. It would be easy with what has been going on in recent weeks to throw in the towel, to become negative about perceived progress in the world of natural capital investments and nature based solutions. Whether it has been companies dropping their climate targets (Air New Zealand), critical commentary from press around 'worthless credits', or this weeks publication from Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The reality we must accept is we do not live in a world of ideals. We live in a world where we are continuously learning and striving for the best for future generations and the future of our planet. As such we must continue to press forward, to learn from our mistakes, not throw the baby out with the bath water, take risks and recognise that investing in the security of our future, is not a 10, 15, or even 20 year commitment. It is for the long term, it is 30, 40, 50 years and some. And we must accelerate what we are doing. Conversations are great, but action is where the rubber hits the road. Thank you to everyone who, regardless of criticism, presses on, continues to commit resources and capital and continually asks the question, "what more can we be doing?", whether that's relating to investments, integrity of the markets, quality of the projects developed, or technical methodologies. #biodiversity #natureinvesting #naturalcapital #sbti #vcm #impactinvesting #biodiversitycredits #climatebased #carbonsolutions #nbs #naturebasedsolutions #soilhealth #arr

Heartfelt thanks to Bruce Howard, Chairman of the Ecosystems Knowledge Network on a successful Nature Finance UK conference. Special thanks to Tom Arthur Sir Ian Cheshire, Stuart Wainwright OBE Samuel Sinclair George Sethia Andy Grundy MICFor Stanley Smith Helen Edmundson Kerry ten Kate Susan Twining and to the many other panelists and organisers. Key themes discussed included the importance of genuine nature impacts, alongside carbon sequestration, as part of robust Natural Capital Solutions. The opportunities for new technology as it relates to baseline assessment and uplift monitoring were emphasized. We could not agree more. I founded Highland Carbon in 2017, as a zoologist with extensive experience in international conservation, and with a passion to achieve genuine biodiversity impacts. From the beginning, we have offered an antidote to small, low quality carbon projects. We had a bold idea to focus on authentic, large-scale projects that benefit rare and endangered species and enhance critically important habitats in spectacular locations. For the past two years, we have also begun raising funds for rewilding activities that complement carbon projects: dry meadow restoration, river re-wiggling, wetland restoration, wet meadow restoration and much more. Another key theme during the Conference was collaboration to achieve the UK's targets for both nature restoration and climate change mitigation. We reach out to the attendees of the Conference to cordially invite them to meet virtually to explore synergies, shared aspirations and mutual benefits. #naturefinance24 #naturebasedsolutions #biodiversityimpacts #nature #biodiversity #ecosystem #landscapeconservation #conservation #naturefinance #BNG #sustainablefinance #netzero #carbonfinance #carbonfootprint #biodiversitynetgain #NaturalCapital #greenfinance #fundnaturerecovery #ESG #SDGs

Away from the headlines, #NYCW provided an opportunity for organisations and groups to engage on best practices and identify real progress that can be made through collaboration. The Lestari Capital team Emelyne Cheney Andika Putraditama took part in a number of valuable discussions, building on ideas for innovative finance and Nature-based Solutions. Our views are clear: 💡 For all the talk of a #ClimateFinanceGap, we are not talking enough about new and additional sources of finance for #NatureBasedSolutions 💡Carbon credits are not, and should not be, the only mechanism available to finance conservation and restoration 💡Innovative finance mechanisms are emerging, such as HIFOR by Wildlife Conservation Society and the Tropical Forest Forever Facility by The Nature Conservancy 💡Through the rise of #BeyondValueChainMitigation, corporate finance can open new opportunities to finance climate action at scale This is only a week, and for Lestari Capital and #RimbaCollective it is about taking what we have committed to into the rest of the year. Thank you to Nature4Climate, World Resources Institute and Global Green Growth Institute for the chance to speak on these panels. #NYCW2024 #Sustainability #NatureBasedSolutions #NaturePositive #InnovativeFinance

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) exemptions are hampering efforts at sustainable, nature-friendly development. The exemptions (namely de minimis and self & custom build) render current BNG policy a net that is full of holes. If the new Government is to achieve truly nature-friendly development, closing these loopholes will be the first step. This is why Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust held a parliamentary roundtable last week, to get politicians, businesses and developers in the room to envision what the future of BNG looks like. After a productive discussion, it is clear that a review of the current policy is necessary. I look forward to continuing to engage with and provide best practise advice to our decision-makers, to foster a more sustainable future. 🌱
