In 2024, Ivar Jacobson, Mike Cohn, Ian Spence and Keith de Mendonca created an initiative to integrate use cases and user stories and we are now pleased to offer this paper to you. It describes several “patterns” you can apply if you would like to create user stories from a use case. The document also provides advice on using the structure of use cases to reverse engineer a description of an existing system, and how to leverage the structure of use cases to split an epic into user stories. If you are a BA, product owner, product manager, or a software developer - the contents of this document offer some valuable tools to help you do your work. We hope you find this information useful. Please do post your thoughts in this LinkedIn group: https://lnkd.in/e9jKH_QH Read the paper in full here: https://lnkd.in/e6BqAaHS #UseCases #UseCase #UserStories

We are delighted to announce the release of our new eBook: “Use Case 3.0: The Guide to Succeeding with Use Cases”. Use Case 3.0 is built on top of the new Use Case Foundation’s concepts and principles, agreed at the start of 2024 by Ivar Jacobson and Alistair Cockburn. Use Case 3.0 offers a set of five practices to guide you as you describe a use case, or a use-case model. Each practice provides checklists and activities to follow. These practices encourage incremental development of your use cases: capture sufficient information and detail for your purposes by following the suggested levels of detail for each work product. Use these practices to avoid producing unnecessarily detailed documentation! Use Case 3.0 can be used to create user stories from your use cases, to drive your agile development work - but it can also be used in conjunction with other project delivery methods. Download the eBook now: https://lnkd.in/dqY4p2Hm Explore the Use Case 3.0 practices for free in our online Essence WorkBench app: https://lnkd.in/dmxQYB9k Share your thoughts and comments with our Reframing Use Cases LinkedIn group here: https://lnkd.in/e9jKH_QH #UseCases #UseCase #UserStories #Essence #Workbench

We've recently published a series of blog posts on Agile Hardware Transformation written by one of our Principal Consultants, Marika Zep. In this series, Marika, with assistance from Averil Franklin Stewart and Lars Brodén, takes a look at the following three topics: • Responding to change over following a plan Introduces the general concept of agility into hardware, and helps to allay any fears sceptics might have in thinking agility can't be made to work with physical products. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e-nuSR_c •Where to begin with agile transformation in hardware Discusses how to start with the change itself as well as the things you have to both do and look for when beginning your transformation into agility. Not all transformations are made equal, and implementing change to processes, culture, roles, responsibilities, and decision-making frameworks will fundamentally impact the way that businesses operate. This requires a careful approach and in this article, Marika Zep outlines the vital components to consider when embarking on agile transformation in hardware: https://lnkd.in/etHBjvjM #Agile #HardwareTransformation #LeanPrinciples #SAFe #ProductDevelopment #Agility
Agile Transformation in Hardware: Where to Begin

Agile methodologies have transformed the software industry by promoting flexibility, adaptability, and responsiveness to change. These principles, rooted in the Agile Manifesto’s emphasis on “responding to change over following a plan,” have enabled software teams to thrive in environments characterized by rapidly evolving requirements and market demands. However, applying these principles to hardware development, where physical constraints and excessive costs are significant factors, requires thoughtful adaptation as to avoid the pitfalls of hastily applying frameworks not yet compatible with current business processes. Despite having 50 years of experience in helping teams and organizations find better ways to develop software and systems, a familiar pattern almost always emerges - the transformation shows great promise at first, but the process often ends up stalling. This constant cycle has led us to learning an important truth: transformation often fails not because of the method, but because it’s impossible for any single method to evolve with the constantly evolving landscape of ideas, practices, and techniques. So why should you start evolving, and how? For over 20 years, the software industry has thrived using Agile practices. Thanks to Lean and the Scaled Agile Framework, the software industry has become more collaborative and transparent, leading to better decision-making and improved communication. But can Agile practices be applied to physical product development? While it may seem challenging at first, Agile Hardware Transformation is just as relevant and achievable as it is in software development. In our latest post, "Organize Around Value in Agile Hardware Transformation", we break down the process into clear, actionable steps to make this transformation approachable and manageable.
