For UK semiconductor startups, partnering is the name of the game. With few notable exceptions, most rely on partners to take their IP from design through to manufacturing. In October 2024, Sean Redmond, Managing Partner at semiconductor startup incubator Silicon Catalyst.UK, accompanied two promising UK startups, weeteq and KuasaSemi Ltd, on a visit to SMD Semiconductor, the chip design and production company owned by the state government of Sarawak, Malaysia. Representing Glasgow-based weeteq at SMD was COO Martin MacDonald, while Cornwall-based founding family member Michael Mawby was there on behalf of KuasaSemi. weeteq and KuasaSemi both target the market for high-power semiconductor devices, but from quite different perspectives: weeteq designs and develops the underlying technology, whereas KuasaSemi develops the tools used to design and develop the technology. Both were there to cement exciting partnership opportunities with SMD. You can read the full story in the link below.
