The 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence started with White Ribbon Day on 25 November, with buildings across the city lit up orange to represent a future free from violence against women and girls. Leeds City Council is proud to be a White Ribbon accredited organisation, which means we are committed to eliminating gender-based violence and we have launched several safety initiatives, including the Night Safe Space mobile bus and the WalkSafe App. As part of the 16 Days of Activism, we're holding local events and activities to encourage everyone to take the White Ribbon promise to never use, excuse or remain silent about gender-based violence. Events have included a 'Race the Dark' marathon, which involved colleagues from across the council and White Ribbon running from Leeds to Saltaire and back before it got dark, to highlight the measures women take every day to keep themselves safe. If you'd like to find out how your organisation can become White Ribbon accredited and foster change, you can join a webinar on Wednesday 4 December (12.00-12.45) to find out more. Click the links in our comments to register for the webinar and join us in taking the White Ribbon promise 👇

The council’s commitment to delivering high-quality homes for local communities received national recognition at this year’s UK Housing Awards. Earlier this week, we were named as one of two highly-commended entrants during the awards ceremony that celebrated excellence across the UK housing sector. Key achievements include: 📈 Leeds’ recent housing growth, with a total of 4,441 homes being built in the city during the 2023/24 financial year. 🛠️ The impact of the Council Housing Growth Programme, which has driven the construction or acquisition of nearly 700 homes. 🏡 The difference made to people’s lives through schemes like the Gascoigne House development, which provides housing care and support in Middleton. 🔅 The bright future for housing in Leeds, with plans already in the pipeline to revitalise six neighbourhoods around the city, including Mabgate, Holbeck and Hunslet.
