Time is running out… Every moment you look away, Chancellor, another #ProvidersUnite’s voice cries out.   In July the King’s Speech set out an ambitious agenda with 40 bills spanning economic stability, health, and national security. However, the budget unveiled this October was far harsher than anticipated for business owners across Britain. Specifically, the 10 national trade associations, 29 regional trade associations and over 1,200 community care and support providers who signed the open letter to the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, under the banner of #ProvidersUnite.    We are urgently calling for an immediate review of these measures and for the establishment of exemptions similar to those granted to the NHS. Alternatively, we ask that the Treasury adjust the Local Government Finance settlement to bridge this gap. While the retirement community sector might be pleased with yesterday's publication of Julienne Elizabeth Meyer CBE's Taskforce report on older people's housing, we should not forget that we are part of a wider care sector that is under immense pressure - this survey from the The Care Provider Alliance shows that eroding already slim margins for social care providers may just make the system topple over. The Budget has exacerbated an already difficult position - if Wes Streeting is serious that we can't fix the NHS without fixing social care, then we can't just suck further cash out of the social care system via NIC increases etc. Great work from all CPA colleagues who got this survey together & out so quickly. In short - we can build as many retirement communities as we like, but if social care as a whole collapses, so will the NHS. I am still hoping that HMT sees sense and can rectify the situation. The alarm bells are ringing over the future of adult social care in this country. The Care Provider Alliance has shared its findings from its comprehensive survey of over 1,180 care and support providers. The survey shows that the social care sector faces potential collapse owing to the combined impact of National Insurance changes and National Living Wage increases announced in the Budget. The crisis facing the sector is stark. The Care Association Alliance / Lincolnshire Care Association endorses this survey and joins the calls from across the social care sector for the government to take steps to avoid a catastrophe. https://lnkd.in/enyd6Sfz

It's awards season and we are currently very busy judging the winners of the Lincolnshire Care Awards 2024. By the middle of December we will have held 12 judging panels across the county (one for each category), and it's a tough job for the judges because there are 112 finalists to choose from! A winner and a highly commended candidate will be selected in each category and the winners will be announced at our awards ceremony at The DoubleTree by Hilton, Lincoln on 27th March 2025. Our Chair Melanie Weatherley MBE also co-chairs the Care Association Alliance which represents care associations across England. Today she has issued a joint statement with her co-Chair Eddy M. to raise awareness of the stark crisis facing adult social care in this country.

Adult social care leaders gathered in Leeds on Wednesday to discuss the national challenges of recruitment and retention of workforce in social care. Our Chair Melanie Weatherley MBE was one of the speakers at the event, titled 'They’re Not Clapping Now: How do we fix the social care workforce crisis?' which was chaired by the BBC's Social Affairs Editor Alison Holt. Melanie pointed out that society does not recognise the value of social care and how fulfilling it is. She called for higher wages in the sector to prevent people leaving care jobs to work in retail or other service industries because they're unable to make ends meet. She also called for the adult social care sector to be more professionalised. “It’s not that our workers are not doing a good job, but we have registered managers who are not registered professionals because no official registration exists," she said, asking whether an Institute of Social Care should be created. https://lnkd.in/dCA5jMDC (Thanks to Westward Care for the photograph.)
