As 2024 ends, North East Lincolnshire Council reflects on a year of impactful decisions poised to leave a lasting positive mark. With determination and partnerships, the council has driven a change agenda setting the stage for future growth, founded on a new three-year Council Plan launching in April 2025. This plan focuses on advancing skills, public health, and family support alongside economic and town enhancements. Key projects like the Freshney Place regeneration in Grimsby and initiatives in Cleethorpes aim to create opportunities aligned with renewables and manufacturing growth. The upcoming Greater Lincolnshire Combined County Authority and Mayoral election on May 1 will further bolster commitments to skill development, economic progress, and infrastructure improvement. As 2025 approaches, the council is dedicated to elevating North East Lincolnshire on regional and national platforms. • 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐝-𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 A new memorial has been unveiled in Lincolnshire to honour decorated American combat veterans killed in a tragic mid-air collision near Carlton Scroop on 18 December 1944. The crash, which also mortally wounded a Dalmatian squadron mascot named Major Jerry, occurred during a training flight from RAF Barkston Heath. The ceremony, attended by around 100 people, marked the 80th anniversary of the accident, with RAF and US Air Force officers, a Guard of Honour, and two Dalmatian dogs present. The Kaddish was recited for Corporal Louis R Tolpen, a Hebrew-American radio specialist among the seven aircrew who died. Ernest Ward Jr, son of a survivor, travelled from Texas to join Danny Wells in remembering Staff Sergeant Stanley R Wells, who had married a local girl just weeks earlier. Lt Col Chris Nastal of the USAF called the honourees “the greatest generation.” The memorial, funded by Simon Hutton, was inspired by David Bristow’s research and book What Happened to You Lazy Lou? and pays tribute to the airmen and their ultimate sacrifice. New areas of the structure are being grit blasted, and base coat painting has begun. To capitalize on expected low tides, weekend work will occur next month, necessitating weekday footway closures from 9 am to 4 pm for public and worker safety. The footway remains open during weekends, with temporary signs in place. January 2025 closures are on Wednesdays 8, 15, 22, and 29, with weekend work on 11-12 and 25-26. North East Lincolnshire Council and partners thank the public for their patience as they ensure safety on the construction site.
