Here’s a sneak peek at another article from our latest November issue of LNG Industry for the #PreWeekendPreview. In an article from EonCoat Tony Collins considers potential coating solutions to prevent corrosion and provide comprehensive, cost-effective coverage. The LNG industry faces unique challenges due to the extremely low temperatures at which LNG is stored and transported. Corrosion is a major concern because materials used in LNG infrastructure, such as pipelines and storage tanks, can become brittle and more susceptible to degradation under cryogenic conditions. This can lead to stress corrosion cracking and cryogenic fatigue, which compromise the structural integrity of critical components. Moreover, impurities such as water vapour and hydrogen sulfide present in LNG can accelerate corrosion processes, creating added risks. At temperatures around -162˚C (-260˚F), traditional corrosion mechanisms may behave differently. For example, while low temperatures can slow down some chemical reactions, they can also lead to embrittlement of metals and alloys. Stress corrosion cracking, a dangerous form of localised corrosion that occurs in susceptible alloys under tensile stress, is exacerbated in these conditions. Additionally, the formation of ice from water vapour within the LNG system can lead to blockages and pressure build-ups, creating further mechanical and corrosion related issues. Given these risks, managing corrosion in LNG systems requires a multi-faceted approach. It begins with selecting materials that can withstand both cryogenic temperatures and corrosive environments. Stainless steel and nickel-based alloys are commonly used, but their cost can be prohibitive for large scale applications. Therefore, protective coatings play a critical role in extending the life of more economical materials like carbon steel. It's Tuesday again, which can mean only one thing: it's time for another #TravelTuesday post from LNG Industry!   This Tuesday, we’re travelling to Vietnam.   PetroVietnam Gas (PV GAS) and PetroVietnam Power Corp. (PV Power) have held a signing ceremony for the LNG supply contract to serve the test run of Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 power plants. Attending the signing ceremony, on the PV GAS side, there were Nguyen Thanh Binh, Chairman of the Board of Directors; Pham Van Phong, Member of the Board of Directors, General Director; members of the Board of Directors, Board of Management, Board of Supervisors, and representatives of specialised departments/units. Fancy a bit of #TravelTuesday? Well you’re in luck! This Tuesday we’ll be travelling to Italy! Over in the Mediterranean ACCIONA Energía, in a consortium with RCM Construzioni, will build a breakwater to shelter the new floating terminal for industrial use at the Port of Ravenna in Italy. The breakwater, which has a tender budget of €216 million, will consist of a vertical dock, built with concrete caissons; it will be 880 m long and 22 m wide.
