About us
The Lyric Theatre in Belfast makes a unique and vital contribution to the community as the only full-time producing theatre in Northern Ireland. Employing local actors, including Liam Neeson, Ciarán Hinds and Adrian Dunbar at early stages of their careers, its mission is to produce high-quality professional theatre that is alive to the complex cultural experience and diverse traditions of the community, and to use the power of live theatre to empower, inspire, engage and educate. From first rehearsal to final curtain, the shows we create are truly indigenous products of Northern Ireland. Putting local issues and local characters centre stage is what the Lyric does best. Our shows are relevant to local audiences and revealing to visitors to the city. And a very important part of the new Lyric Theatre’s strategy is to tour as widely as possible, to give audiences outside Northern Ireland an insight into our culture and to the work of the Lyric. The Lyric’s new home on the banks of Belfast’s River Lagan, on the site of the previous theatre, is a landmark £18.1m building that signals the continued regeneration of the city and a catalyst for real progress in arts infrastructure for artists and audiences alike. Designed by O’Donnell + Tuomey, and built in a stunning blend of Belfast brick, glass, steel, concrete and Iroko timber, the new theatre will be alive and dramatic at all times.

What a week at The Lyric! ✨ We welcomed nearly 400 pupils from The Goliath Trust schools for a special free preview of A Christmas Carol. For many, it was their first-ever theatre experience, and seeing their excitement (especially meeting Scrooge!) was truly magical. 🌟 We celebrated the Opening Night of A Christmas Carol, and we’re thrilled to see the production nearly sold out! 📣 We also launched our Spring/Summer 2025 season, and we can’t wait to share these exciting productions with you in the new year! A huge thank you to our incredible Lyric team—onstage and behind the scenes—who make this all possible. Your passion and hard work bring the magic of theatre to life every single day.

Our performance of ‘A Christmas Carol’ this morning was a special #FreePreview for almost 400 pupils across The Goliath Trust schools. This is the 7th year we have partnered with The Goliath Trust to help them in their work in supporting vulnerable children and families across #Belfast. For many of the children, it was their first visit to a theatre, with many of them getting the chance to meet Scrooge himself! We were delighted to welcome so many children from across the city. Yesterday the award-winning artist and great #FriendoftheLyric Colin Davidson was at the Lyric rehanging his portrait paintings for our art exhibition space. To add to the existing portrait of our patron #LiamNeeson, #MarieJones is now back up just in time for Christmas! 🎄 Colin also added five new and previously unseen portraits of cultural figures from Ireland: Actor James Martin, artist Basil Blackshaw, writer Colum McCann, artist Joy Gerrard and singer Fiachna Ó Braonáin. They look amazing! and are free to visit and enjoy now at the theatre every day from 10am or before our evening shows. Today we are celebrating Lyric Belfast, who are doing fantastic Theatre Green Book work, both in their scenic workshop and in their wider building. On the Green Arts NI website you can read more about how they have been collaborating with other arts organisations across Northern Ireland, and their operations focused initiatives such as updating their Building Management System with help from Theatres Trust and The Wolfson Foundation If you are based in Northern Ireland and are involved with a performing arts organisation looking to reduce their environmental impact, we would encourage you to make contact.
