Richard Hogg, Chair of Manufacturing NI, shares insights into an innovative digital project with the Smart Manufacturing Data Hub. The initiative deployed 30 IoT sensors on Macrete’s vibrating and rotating machinery, connecting their precast concrete equipment to enable proactive monitoring, real-time alerts and optimisation. This case-study is a powerful example of how IoT and data analytics can deliver tangible operational and preventative maintenance benefits across the manufacturing sector. Celebrating manufacturing and representing industry on Energy, Rates and Labour issues. Growing the economy.
About us
Manufacturing Counts It creates jobs and wealth, producing the goods that we all need, from bread to health scanners to wind turbines. It is the bedrock of the Northern Ireland economy, dependent not on the whims of public expenditure but the industry of its people. Northern Ireland has a place on the global stage: its manufacturing heritage is present in the story of the modern world, from building the then largest object ever to move (Titanic) to revolutionising the world of farming (Massey Ferguson) to creating the tyres (Dunlop) that gave people mobility. And that contribution continues today and will in the future, including technologies that today are science but tomorrow will be taken for granted by customers all over the world. Manufacturing flourishes when it is valued and supported. Ensuring it is sets a challenge, part of which is down to Manufacturing Northern Ireland. We need to speak up more about our successes, make sure our contribution is recognised and enthuse the next generation to engage in manufacturing, to see the value in making things. We see that bright future and have identified actions to make it happen MNI is a campaigning organisation which works with members, workforce representatives, policymakers and regulators to challenge areas which impact on the cost of doing business, specifically rates, energy, labour and increasingly, Brexit. We have been protecting the £58m per year Rates benefit, we have taken tens of millions of pounds off energy bills, secured finances for skills investment and much more.

Ballymena Chamber were delighted to co-host a major Business event with Causeway Chamber of Commerce in the Galgorm Hotel sponsored by Danske Bank UK Over 120 guests representing businesses across the Ballymena and Causeway areas listened to a panel of experts -Conor Lambe, Chief Economist Danske Bank: John Paul Coleman, CFA, MCSI, Head of Markets, Danske Bank and Stephen Kelly, CEO Manufacturing NI being questioned by the impressive Susan HayesCulleton CFA, "The Positive Economist" on their perceptions of the economy and its direction of travel in the next 12 months. Whilst there are many challenges for business, including budgetary measures such as the rise in Employers National Insurance contributions and Inheritance Tax - there is also a degree of optimism with the stability of having an Executive at Stormont and a new government in Westminster both wanting to see job creation and an increase in economic activity.

A result on rates! Finance Minister, Dr Caoimhe Archibald, yesterday confirmed that the immediate threat to the continuation of Industrial Derating Policy has been lifted. Minister Archibald, in a statement to the NI Assembly announced a conclusion to the rates element of the revenue raising consultation she inherited from the previous, Direct Rule, Secretary of State which could have resulted in significant changes to what and how much rates are collected from businesses and domestic properties. Alongside the confirmation, the Minister announced that over the next 10 years all rates reliefs will be reviewed to ensure there is alignment with the objectives of the Executive starting with Small Business Rates Relief (which manufacturers do not receive as they secure industrial derating instead). This means that, at the earliest, it will be 2027 before any further review will take place around the relief which manufacturers secure. Manufacturers everywhere engaged with the process and Manufacturing NI on behalf of the sector provided the Minister, Department and Land Property Service with a substantial body of evidence which demonstrated why this relief was important in delivering the Executive and Economy Minister’s 4 priority areas of good jobs, which are regionally dispersed in a more productive and decarbonised economy. The Minister also announced the commissioning of research into the costs of doing business which we welcome and will fully engage with. We thank the Minister for her attention, including directly engaging with Manufacturing NI and visiting manufacturing businesses, and concluding that the rating system is an important part of securing the economy which the Executive wants. The Minister’s approach is both sound and strategic and we offer our support.
