Martingale Foundation

Over the last two weeks the Martingale team has had the extraordinary privilege of meeting aspiring PhD students at their Martingale Foundation interview. It has been an absolute joy to hear them articulate their interests, write down proofs, sketch graphs and diagrams, and explore a wide range of topics with supportive and curious academics from all our partner universities. Enormous thanks to The University of Edinburgh (in glorious sunshine), Helen Mawdsley and University of Bristol (in heavy snow), and Kate Hunter at Perrett Laver (with incredible views of Nine Elms) for hosting our assessment centres. Finally, huge thanks to the many academics from our partner universities who have helped interview - we hope you enjoyed them as much as we did!

What a day! I was delighted to spend the morning yesterday at House of Commons amongst passionate mathematicians and like minded organisations for a parliamentary expo as part of Maths Week England. Thank you to Campaign for Mathematical Sciences (CaMS) for a fascinating event showcasing the importance of Maths at all levels. As we recruit our third cohort of Martingale Foundation Scholars, we are proud to be supporting a new generation of mathematicians. The afternoon was full of discussion on the current state of higher education at day two of the Wonkhe Festival. A particular highlight was the final plenary on Opportunity for All, highlighting the importance of cross sector collaboration to ensure no student is left behind.

It’s the first day of interviews for Martingale Foundation Scholarship applicants and this always brings an excited nervousness (on both sides!).
