About us
We’re transforming financial wellbeing in the UK. We’re here to ensure every person feels more in control of their finances throughout their lives, from pocket money to pensions. Why? Because when they are, communities are healthier, businesses are more prosperous, the economy benefits and individuals feel better off. There are many organisations in our nations which can make a real difference. Our role is to connect them to a shared purpose: achieving the UK’s five national goals for financial wellbeing. We lead the way with our own services, which reflect how much we care about the people we serve. They demonstrate what works best in a way that's targeted to those most in need and inclusive of people from all backgrounds. Working together we can really impact the lives of our customers. And we won’t stand still. We support innovation internally and externally so that everyone's using the best ways out there to help people feel more in control of their money. We will work to make sure the whole of the UK understands that financial, physical and mental health are all deeply connected. Our ambition is that everyone sees financial wellbeing as a national mission and a core UK value.

🎬 | Our research shows that in 2023, more than 8 million people across the UK needed #DebtAdvice. However, our research has also found that many people do not seek help due to feeling overwhelmed, embarrassed and worried about the consequences of speaking to a debt adviser. As part of this year’s #TalkMoney Week, we worked with three debt advisers to highlight the benefits and importance of getting help for debt. Find out more and hear how debt advisers Tom, Ioana and Ruby provide a supportive, non-judgemental environment for people to get the help they need with their finances: https://lnkd.in/eyqktwXj

According to our recent research, one in three working 18 to 25-year-olds have never contributed to a workplace or private pension. Our study also found that milestone planning was the top savings priority for young people, with half of 18 to 25-year-olds (51%) saying that they are saving to buy a property, get married, or saving for similar life events. Thank you for the coverage, Peterborough Telegraph. Personal finance is a huge issue for so many people in our communities, so it was a pleasure to host representatives of the Money and Pensions Service. https://lnkd.in/eHPQbHjQ

New Nest Insight #RealAccounts research, part-funded by MaPS, examines the effect that income volatility can have on UK households. The report highlights the economic and mental burdens that disproportionately impact people and households with irregular or unpredictable incomes. It also suggests ways that policymakers, employers, and designers of financial services and products can help reduce these burdens. Learn more and download the report: https://ow.ly/B9M250Ua1kV

🎙 | You can catch our Regional Partnership Manager for North West England, James K., speaking to Simone Riley on BBC Radio Manchester between 1:28:45 and 1:53:45 👇 https://lnkd.in/eRjMz4tU
🗣 📻 I enjoyed speaking with simone riley this morning on her #BBCRadioManchester show. We had a great #live conversation with a focus on preparing for #Christmas spending along with how to #budget and save for this more costly time of year. Within the #broadcast I explained how The Money and Pensions Service provides free, independent resources available via our MoneyHelper website including the useful "Budget Planner" #tool. We also talked about Black Friday and how not to #spend more than you had planned during this upcoming event. A huge #thankyou to simone riley for inviting me to speak and hosting these key money conversations. I'd also like to thank Jude Brownhill from the BBC who was producing today's show and my MaPS colleague Sarah Simmons for the input they provided to successfully deliver this #onair session. If you'd like to listen to the show then Simone and I #TalkMoney between 11:30 and 12:00. A recording of the show is available via the #BBCRadioManchester webpage. #BBC #BBCRadio #BBCRadioManchester #Parternerships #Broadcast #PrimeTime #Budgeting #NorthWestEngland #Manchester #Lancashire #Cheshire #Salford #MediaCityUK #ThankYou #TalkMoney

In October 2022, our £1.1 million grant programme supported six #FinancialEducation organisations to expand the training and support available for teachers and practitioners working with children and young people in vulnerable circumstances. A recent evaluation of our grant programme found that: ➡️ flexible and adaptable teaching resources help motivate teachers and practitioners to deliver financial education ➡️ engaging children and young people in the co-production of resources helps to create relevant and engaging content ➡️ financial education training results in positive outcomes for teachers, school leaders and practitioners Find out more about the project and download our evaluation report: https://lnkd.in/dEmpVq5i

On Wednesday we held our third annual Personal Financial Wellbeing Research Conference #PFWConf24, co-organised again with the Money and Pensions Service. As in previous years, the day was built around three different panels of experts, reflecting examples of the three themes of our work as a Centre: On “creating financial resilience”, our first panel drew first-hand experience from those in leadership positions of Age UK and Citizens Advice charities who are working tirelessly on poverty alleviation at local levels amidst the huge challenges this implies in late 2024. This was followed with an update from our project team on the toolkit we are developing, and currently testing, to support councils and their third and voluntary sector partners take their collaborative efforts in this area even further forward. On “establishing effective ‘everyday finance’ approaches”, we had a panel of fraud experts from two renowned law firms @Tenet and Cornerstone Barristers as well as the Head of Fraud Advisory Panel to share their experience in counter fraud activities. The session reminded us all how complex this area is, and how challenging supporting victims is in practice. Our panel after lunch gathered household finance experts to explore the debt and credit stories we have seen emerging from our work with Nest Insight and Yunus Centre GCU colleagues – the ground breaking financial diaries project Real Accounts, with a dedicated Real Accounts zone outside the theatre to showcase different stories we’ve gathered in the past year on British households with irregular income. On “understanding the underlying principles of personal financial wellbeing”, we enjoyed a range of posters submitted this year from partners and colleagues, covering a range of significant topics such as “The impacts of poor financial health on behaviour and decision-making”, “Cancer costs – exploring the financial wellbeing impact of cancer diagnosis among young cancer patients and their families” and “Normalizing individual responsibility? A gendered study of retirement planning in a financialised system”. The day is fully recorded and will be available on our event page and Youtube channel. Please take a look of what we are doing currently, and get in touch to let us know how we can work together: https://lnkd.in/efUwtXhh We hope to see you (again) at one of our future events. As an interdisciplinary research centre, we believe the sharing of ideas and challenges faced will make sure we all stay focused on the most important and timely issues in bringing rigorous academic research to bear on the complex challenges of improving personal financial wellbeing, and that an interesting conversation will always be the beginning of an impactful and truly relevant research project. :) Andy Annie Clare Omid Rasha Kirthi Matthew Andrew Hayley Anne Paul Adele Peter Russell Dawn Ruth Lin Dixon Mihaela Aston University Aston Business School
