Updates

  • Our principles Every designer has heard of Dieter Rams. His famous Ten Principles for Good Design are world-renowned and have been a key consideration in the design of many products we know and recognise today. However, they were written in 1976 – a world without the internet, at a time when climate change wasn’t in the daily headlines. So we’ve updated them. Better suited to today’s world, these refreshed principles aim to encourage designers to think more about what they ‘should’ do and not just about what they ‘can’. It is vital that as founders, creators, makers and even marketers, we start to question the reason for things to exist and explore what the world might look like if they didn’t. What is your favourite? #designstrategy #designprinciples #dieterrams

Founder of Morrama - certified B Corp | Designing for a Better World

On Friday we had our latest Design Declares event, and it was incredible. The speakers: Sophie Thomas, Afreen Saulat, Tobias Revell and Alexie Sommer brought insight and experience to the stage. Urging us to reframe how we think about waste, use care as a tool for design and how to look to the future when designing for the present. During the speculative design workshop run by Tara Hanrahan and I, groups proposed products or services for a range of 2050 scenarios. It was amazing how much they achieved in less than 90 minutes working with complete strangers. But more than anything I was, once again, just in awe of the energy and passion for learning, sharing and taking action this growing community brings to these events. If you missed out this time… don’t miss the next one. Shout out to Sandrine Herbert Razafinjato and Abb-d Taiyo for their ongoing passion and hard work making things like this happen. Sustainable Ventures for hosting, TDC PR and Morrama | Certified B Corp for sponsoring and Pip & Nut | B Corp for the snacks! As well as everyone who helped out on the day. 💚 #designdeclares

  • Timeless, beautiful design Forged from AI7075 Aluminium the bowl is designed to last. The minimal machined brush handle nestles perfectly in the arm of the bowl and holds a synthetic, cruelty-free, brush knot ensuring it can drip dry after use. “The Angle collection is about looking at things differently. Seeing shaving not as a tedious task but as an opportunity to slow down for a moment and take pride in the grooming ritual.” - Jo Barnard, Morrama Founder. Brush and Bowl https://buff.ly/40CT15X

  • We read lots of stories about how Steve Jobs never did market research. He’s quoted in his biography as saying “People don't know what they want until you show it to them.” This could easily be interpreted as implying that researching customers isn’t helpful at all, but what Steve actually means is that people are really bad at articulating what they actually want. So asking them directly doesn’t always work. Market research can also be a minefield when it comes to bias. It’s all too easy to ask subtly leading questions such as ‘if there was a more sustainable option on the market, would you buy it?’ and you very quickly end up collecting data that appears to support your idea but in reality is doing nothing of the sort. Jo Barnard speaks to Andrew Muir Wood about design research and validating your ideas.

  • The future of medicine Whether it’s for treating menopause or tailoring vitamin supplements, 3D printing and dosages tailored through data capture and AI/machine learning will inevitably be the next big jump in supplements and medication. Everybody is different, the way bodies respond to things is different and so being able to make doses bespoke to an individual is an exciting future. For the purpose of the descriptions we have referred to the person going through the menopause as ‘woman’ and ‘female’. However, we acknowledge that that not all persons experiencing menopause will identify this way. This concept is was formed by Morrama Lab for the purpose of exploring ways that tech could support the wellbeing of those experiencing symptoms during the menopause that impact their quality of life. • Behind The Scenes of our recent project for wagamama retail range. From AI visuals, through studio photography, to the final pack. We implemented AI software into our process to create variations of food photography in order to quickly and effectively design multiple concepts. Once the overall graphic design was in place, we supported with the art direction for the food photography, alongside a top London based food stylist and photographer. The implementation was almost instantaneous as the team were able to line up scenes with accuracy and overlay them on to pack designs on the spot, allowing Wagamama to review and sign-off straight away. Can you think of any other interesting way to implement AI in your design process? Link to the project below. • Volunteering and donations As a B Corp, we strive to improve on our Impact Report each year. This year we did just that, especially in donating our time. 340+ Pro bono hrs working on projects including a redesign of two products for the RNIB that will launch towards the end of the year. 60+ hrs pro bono donation of time to work on a project to help the homeless and refugees yet to be released. 70+ hrs for mentoring and teaching. Meaning our total pro bono time for education, mentoring and charity has increased 170% (Our goal was 252 hrs and we beat this by some way!) • Jo spoke to Rob Alderson, Editor of Design Week about the next Design Declares event. The event on November 22 – Design & Climate: Changing Perspectives – is part of Design Declares’ work to “break that cycle.” It will focus on changing behaviours, mindsets and practices in the long-term, with a panel discussion and a speculative design workshop to get people thinking “10, 20, 30 years in the future.” Read more here https://lnkd.in/euWZxuH9 #sustainabledesign #designstrategy #designfuture

  • Morrama | Certified B Corp reposted this

Partnering once again on our third project together, Wagamama have trusted Morrama to deliver their brand values across multiple touch points, from their innovative takeaway packaging design, to their staff bag re-shoring project and now the redesign of their iconic retail pack; allowing customers to recreate the taste of Wagamama at home. Bold type, beautiful colours and enticing visuals were at the core of delivering the refined and minimalistic retail pack refresh. Hierarchy, negative space and captivating bite-size visuals supported by recognisable colours for each flavour profile. The team utilised AI to experiment with product imagery before heading into the studio to shoot for real. You might not have guessed but all the images here are CGI too. This fresh new packaging line is now in stores across the whole of the UK. Learn more in the comments below. #packaging #graphicdesign #designstrategy
