The Bridge of Aspirations has won the Architecture Today Editor's Award 2024 for Buildings that Stand the Test of Time. “Playful and poetic, the Bridge of Aspiration is a gift to the city that never ceases to be surprising, yet somehow looks as though it was always meant to be there.” Completed in 2003 and twisting above Floral Street in Covent Garden, the bridge links the Royal Ballet School to the Grade I listed Royal Opera House. Designed to harmonise with surrounding structures, its skewed alignment and varied landing levels dictate its geometrically simple form. Learn more about the project: https://lnkd.in/e2aPQsED

I had a great time at Brickworks Design Studio’s event last Friday, presenting Battersea Power Station and exploring the use of brick on such a significant scale, while also paying attention to small-scale detailing and sensitivities. Thank you to Brickworks for organising such a wonderful event at an amazing venue, and for facilitating insightful conversations that bring together historic fabric and modern architecture. It is great to see that soft and warm materials such as brick, stone, faience are fashionable again for domestic, mid-scale projects, as well as major commercial projects. In a period where we all recognise the need to be more thoughtful about how we construct our buildings — being site-specific, responding to climate and orientation, and creating warm, welcoming environments — brick proves to be an excellent material that addresses these challenges.

Great to see our Eddington Lot 1 North West Cambridge project highlighted as an exemplar in the report. recognising the critical role of design quality and the integration of amenities and infrastructure in creating communities that are both functional and enduring. We know this will be essential for delivering well-designed, sustainable homes at scale to meet the government's housing targets effectively. #wilkinsoneyre #NorthWestCambridge
Over the last decade, new home delivery has been 28% below the target of 300,000 homes per year. Learn about our new model to help build the social homes we need, and address the ongoing housing crisis.

Some projects demand more than just vision—they demand collective ingenuity, and 21 Moorfields was definitely one of those projects. At WilkinsonEyre, we have a saying: we’re always looking for the best idea in the room. This mindset is at the heart of what it means to be an architect. It’s true that architects often feel like “jacks of all trades and masters of none,” but the role of bringing ideas together is such a privileged one. 21 Moorfields isn’t just a singular vision or one individual’s gesture: it’s a collective solution. Every detail reflects the incredible collaboration of ideas, engineering innovation, and a shared passion for construction from everyone involved. I’m proud to have been a part of it, and so grateful for the opportunity to work with such a talented team. Too many to name them all, but you know who you are! #WilkinsonEyre #21Moorfields LandsecRobert Bird GroupCundallAvison Young@andysturgeondesign Gleeds@rpm@railassetdevelopment@momentumtransport @davidbonnetassociates@sandybrownFMDC LtdQCIC@jga@reefCity of London Corporation@tpbennettDeutsche BankMaceSir Robert McAlpine

White Bay Power Station has the potential to become an ecosystem of creativity not seen since the opening of the Sydney Opera House. This is a unique opportunity for Sydney, which has experienced a 30% decline in creative spaces in recent years. With creatives now spending more than 60% of their income on rent, there is an urgent demand for affordable, purpose-built creative spaces. Matt Levinson from the Committee for Sydney recently launched the Making It In Sydney report, highlighting a growing concern: as rising costs and shrinking workspaces threaten to push creativity out of the city. Sebastien Ricard joined the conversation on Sydney's creative future last week, drawing on examples of industrial heritage repurposing in cities like London, Sheffield, and Bristol. He pointed out that Sydney has the potential to be a catalyst for change, creating opportunities to embed creativity from the very beginning of urban development. The Committee for Sydney’s report outlines 11 key actions and celebrates the new Creative Land Trust initiative, but it’s clear that real change requires a shift in policy. Only with long-term solutions in place can Sydney secure creative spaces that are fit for purpose and not reliant on short-term demolition leases that lead to uncertainty and escalating costs. Sydney has less space than ever for making creative work, and that has to change if we're going to have a city with the originality, surprise, delight and resilience that so many of us want in the places we live. That was the clear message at the launch of our report, Making it in Sydney, today at the extraordinary White Bay Power Station. Report author Matt Levinson outlined the report's key moves to protect and make more space for creative work, after laying out core findings on the challenges workers are facing due to the rising cost of rehearsal spaces, art studios, recording facilities and other creative workspaces. Sydney is holding onto its place as the nation's creative centre, but the workforce is getting smaller - if we're going to do something about this, we need to do it now. As Matt said, the concern for us as a city is that original local work, which tells our stories and is inherently risky, gets put on the backburner, as workers turn to more stable jobs or move town, and programmers and bookers go with proven global or legacy products that come with a lower risk profile. It was fantastic to hear from Sebastien Ricard, who took us on a journey through his three decade career reshaping and rethinking industrial buildings to create some of WilkinsonEyre's most significant projects, including Magna, The Crystal and Battersea. They were joined by Roslyn Mayled, Anita Mitchell, Daniel Bourne, Ryan Thomas and Erin Henshaw-Hill for a rich discussion on the steps we need to take to open up more creative workspace. And to Erin, Nina Macken, Arlita McDonald, Jim Murray, Yvette Carr and the team at Ethos Urban, thanks so much for your support, it's hugely appreciated.
