Today we are launching the Nature Data Sharing Initiative (NDSI). Most nature data is siloed in repositories and used by a very narrow audience today. Yet, if properly activated, this data could greatly improve our ability to understand and value natural ecosystems. NDSI is a collection of resources designed to promote data literacy and foster a culture of responsible, impactful data sharing. This version includes the following: - Overview: An introduction, overview, and guidance notes around nature data and Nature Practitioners’ field data; - Guide: A guide on practical steps for sharing data - Template: A data sharing worksheet and sample data sharing agreement template. Cecil developed the NDSI in collaboration with numerous experts. I am proud to share Nkwi Flores, Samichhya Khadka and Ashurst authored this version. These resources were also developed in collaboration with Emily Cravigan (Allens), Anthony Lloyd and Kendrick Deng (Ashurst), Connor Jordan, Tom Walker (Cecil), Florian Reber (Chloris Geospatial), Climateworks Centre, Megan Pillsbury (Dunya Analytics), Sara Schmude, Bert Glover (Impact Ag Partners), Kate Wing (Intertidal Agency ) Victor Allory, Romain Fau (Kanop), Paul Young (Kita), Karl Burkart (One Earth), Alexis Moyer, Ed Mitchard (Space Intelligence), Camille Goldstone-Henry, Jada Andersen (Xylo Systems), and Chris Tolles (Yard Stick PBC). These are living resources that we hope will be updated based on your feedback. A link to the home page is included in the comments. Please help us share these resources.

🌎 Exciting new addition to the Mozaic Earth family! We are absolutely stoked to announce that James Hirst has joined our team as Founding Engineer! James isn’t your average techie. He’s a University of Cambridge grad with a few years at Microsoft under his belt. He’s brilliant, yes - but more importantly, he’s hungry to solve the biggest crisis of the last 60 Million years. And he knows it’s going to take #grit, #unconventional ideas, and relentless #innovation. When it comes to transitioning our entire economy to be nature-positive, “safe” just doesn’t cut it. We need bold, creative, even radical approaches, and James is ready to build them with us. He’s joining us to use the latest tech in ways that aren’t just cool but pragmatic, and customer-planet-centric. So here’s to James and changing the game. He didn’t come here to play small, and neither did we. When we say we will empower 1 billion people to become custodians of our most valuable asset – Nature - we mean it. Welcome to family, James Hirst! Neil Cuthbert, Sylvain Vaquer #GameChanger #Biodiversity #AI #NaturalCapital #NaturePositive #TechForGood #CitizenScience

👋 That's a wrap! After a full week at #COP16 I'm back in rainy London town. As promised, see below part 2 of my takeaways from the event! 1️⃣ Big gap between the level of energy and engagement at #COP16 and the lack of media coverage globally for what should be a planetary-scale rallying cry. Short-termism is the single biggest risk that humanity faces, period. 2️⃣ This gap also exists within the private sector: very promising business representation, but too often it is only the sustainability team present. When will nature-related risks be the CEO’s biggest priority? If you are interested in learning more how the EIIS - European Institute of Innovation for Sustainability and their #BiodiversityForBusiness program can help you craft a nature strategy and narrative, please drop me a line! 3️⃣ Yesterday's adversaries are tomorrow's best allies: I loved the keynote given by Patricia Zurita, Mark Wishnie and Melanie Nakagawa at #Bloom24 on how they learnt how to collaborate (and find consensus) to secure US$ 1 billion from investors to plant, conserve and restore nearly 275,000 hectares of degraded land in Brazil, Uruguay and Chile. We need a LOT more of these! 4️⃣ Are the insurers the missing piece of the puzzle? They have the key role of de-risking investments toward a nature-positive transition. (Somewhat) surprisingly, their biggest challenge is NOT data availability but integrating ecological input with economic models over a representative period of time. One to add to the Mozaic Earth roadmap I guess Neil Cuthbert 😊 5️⃣ Release of the #NatureTech Report! Super proud to have been able to contribute to the report with a case study on our collaboration with rePLANET to deliver a low-cost biodiversity baseline to one of our pioneer customers: Foresight Group Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/e9paSC8Z 6️⃣ Release of the Ecosystem Condition Protocol: along with the start of the consultation on the state of nature metrics by Nature Positive Initiative, the #ECP team led by Joshua Berger have launched a complementary effort to define how to measure ecosystem conditions in a consistent way. Something that Mozaic Earth can and will be supporting at scale. With all that said, the country-level negotiations are off to a (very) slow start, but with still a week to go, I’m hopeful that we can get back on track! Stay tune for future Mozaic Earth updates. We've got some really cool stuff to share over the next few weeks and months. Finally great to spend time in person with some of my partners in crime in #Cali building kick-ass tech to solve the most urgent problem of our time: Louis de Vitry, Cameron Dowd, Jamie Batho, Connor Jordan, Tom Walker, Fabian Schmidt-Pramov, Zoe Balmforth, Coby Strell, Megan Pillsbury, Josephine Graf, Amal Ketata, Florian Reber and many others. And big thank you to Gilad Goren and the Nature Tech Collective for bringing us along on the delegation. #cop16 #biodiversity #groundtruthing #AI

Friday food for thought – the Climate Week edition: *** old news alert ***: businesses worldwide depend on nature—yet they're still flying blind. This status quo is no longer excusable and its our job at Nature Tech Collective to shine a light on the solutions, pathways, and best practices to move us towards nature positivity. The World Economic Forum estimates that over half of global GDP is moderately or highly dependent on ecosystem services. That's a staggering $44 trillion at risk. Unfortunately, We still lack comprehensive data on biodiversity and ecosystem health. This isn't just an academic issue—it's a trillion-dollar blind spot for companies and investors. Consider this: 68% of companies in the S&P Global Broad Market Index have high dependency on ecosystem services like water provision and flood control . For the S&P Global 1200, it's even higher at 85% (S&P Global). Yet most of these companies can't accurately assess their nature-related risks or opportunities. The stakes are high. The report estimates that S&P Global 1200 companies used 22 million hectares of land in 2021, degrading ecosystem integrity equivalent to 2.2 million hectares of pristine rainforest. Without proper data, companies can't manage these impacts or dependencies effectively. Enter nature tech—a growing sector focused on leveraging technology to measure, monitor, and manage biodiversity. Community-driven initiatives are at the forefront, filling critical data gaps: 1. Local knowledge integration: Indigenous and local communities often possess deep understanding of local ecosystems. Nature tech platforms are tapping into this knowledge, combining it with satellite data and AI for more comprehensive insights. Regen Network Development PBC Rainforest Foundation US 2. Citizen science: Apps enabling everyday people to record species sightings are creating vast, real-time biodiversity databases. This crowdsourced approach complements traditional scientific surveys. Mozaic Earth, Terraspect BirdLife International Low-cost sensors: Affordable, networked sensors are allowing for continuous monitoring of ecosystems, from soil health to wildlife movements. Community-deployed sensor networks provide granular data at scale. Soil in Formation, PBC Rainforest Connection (RFCx) Blockchain for transparency: Decentralized ledger technology is being used to create tamper-proof records of biodiversity data, enhancing trust and traceability in nature-based projects. Devonian Systems, GainForest.Earth The HBAR Foundation The biodiversity data gap is a trillion-dollar problem. But it's also a trillion-dollar opportunity for nature tech innovators and investors who recognize the value of community-driven solutions. As we bridge this gap, we're not just protecting nature—we're safeguarding the very foundation of our global economy.
