A fantastic piece by Charlotte Jones on MyThirdPlace (with great original photography aswell!) Charlotte writes about the many #ThirdPlaces that Portsmouth, where she has been a local for decades, has to offer: Clarence Pier and South Parade Pier: "The intergenerational fun of penny slots, claw grabbers and typical British seaside amusements offer hours of nostalgic entertainment...South Parade Pier has a rich history, having been burned down and rebuilt three times, yet the structure thrives today. Hotwalls Studios: "This creative community hub is situated in the aesthetic 15th century stonework arches of Old Portsmouth... Open days, exhibitions and events run all year round, giving plenty of opportunity to meet and connect with creators and like-minded art enthusiasts. The Pyramids: "The eye-catching building provides a multi-purpose social space, serving as a music and entertainment venue by night that showcases many genres of music, comedy shows and other performances... the collective energy of a group gym class not only boosts your motivation to work out harder or longer, but also offers the opportunity for valuable social interaction. Southsea Common: "An anchor of the city’s public interactions, Southsea Common is a hub for all sorts of community events... Street performers, live music and interactive events all help attract culinary explorers to this energetic food fiesta." Read more about how Portsmouth City Council's Coastline is great for bringing people together and serves as a framework for the rest of the UK's social infrastructure: https://lnkd.in/eXGMf4KZ #thirdplace #thirdspace #socialspace

Very pleased that Steve MacDouell, Professor Fanshawe College and Pastor FreeChurch Toronto, has produced a great piece for MyThirdPlace! ☕️ Steve explores the profound role of third places - like your local coffee shop in creating spaces of belonging that bring communities together. "There is something about your local barista knowing your coffee order that grounds you in a place. It’s one of the small, subtle ways that I started to feel like a character in the story of my neighborhood... The collision of humanity that occurs in a local coffee shop has a way of catalyzing ideas that, if leveraged well, can go on to improve the well-being of our neighborhoods" Read Steve’s reflections on how these seemingly simple spaces are critical to our social infrastructure: https://lnkd.in/eahAkPVM #ThirdPlaces #CoffeeShop #LocalBusiness

  • The Hole in the Wall is a great #ThirdPlace in the UK. Stephen Rohan writes on MyThirdPlace: "The pub was taken over by new management in 2021 and has seen something of a resurgence, with a facelift and a pleasant patio area with decking out the back. There is a pool table and this is usually my preferred place to meet friends for a game when in town (I was there just a couple of weeks ago to meet an old friend). The last few times I’ve been it has been relatively busy which is good to see. Given its history, old-world charm, and incredible location, I hope the Hole in the Wall continues to serve customers for many years to come." #thirdspaces #socialspaces #thirdplaces #localbusiness

  • Colchester Arts Centre is a great #ThirdPlace in the UK. Stephen Rohan writes on MyThirdPlace: "Colchester’s Arts Centre has been running since 1980 (one year before I was born) and is arguably one of Colchester’s most important creative spaces. The venue is run by a dedicated team of locals who have a passion for music, the arts and entertainment. As a focal point of the Colchester community, The Arts Centre engages in lots of outreach work that directly benefits Colchester residents and others. Current programmes include African Families UK which provides a space for African families to get together, and the second is the recently formed Gamechanger Pt 2, which aims to help those in often-neglected areas around Colchester and Tendring such as Jaywick. The venue is also partnered with local and nationwide charities including Nightshelter and Colchester FoodBank, and it’s possible to make donations via the website, as well as donations to the Arts Centre itself" Read Stephen's full article here: https://lnkd.in/eHF_YFsk #thirdplace #thirdspace #socialspace

I recently wrote a piece on Bath's Royal Victoria Park for MyThirdPlace 🌳 The 'Third Place' is a concept coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg. He defines these places as our social environments outside of home and work where people gather and build community. MyThirdPlace takes that concept, and their mission is to restore shared spaces and community interaction. Check it out! #thirdplace #community #wellbeing Joshua Chan
