Empowering the nation to get confident with numbers.
About us
The UK has a problem with numbers, and it is holding us back. As a nation, numeracy levels are significantly below the average for developed countries; and as individuals, nearly half the working-age population has the expected numeracy level of a primary school child. Not getting on with numbers blights lives and livelihoods, contributing to pervasive problems from unemployment to poor health and debt. And it costs the UK economy a staggering £20 billion a year. Low numeracy disproportionately affects disadvantaged communities and holds millions of people back from fulfilling their potential and from getting on in life. With anxiety about numbers passing on from one generation to the next, we need to stop this cycle now. Our work is an engine of social mobility, helping to improve numeracy and change perceptions, leading to better outcomes for individuals. It is scalable, supported by a sustainable funding base and delivered in partnership to leverage our impact. It strengthens and reinforces our role and reputation as the UK’s ‘go-to’ numeracy experts and helps increase how numeracy is understood, valued and developed. How do we work? We provide support, tools and training for improving number confidence and skills. Whether you want to help your team, help yourself or support our cause, please get in touch with enquiries@nationalnumeracy.org.uk Find out all about our work at www.nationalnumeracy.org.uk The National Numeracy Challenge is our free and easy-to-use website where people can improve their confidence and skills with numbers. We teamed up with Mumsnet to understand how low confidence with numbers can be passed down through the generations 👥 In a survey carried out with 697 parents, we found that respondents whose mothers had low number confidence had a 33% lower number confidence score than those with mothers who were more confident with maths. Furthermore, nearly half (48%) of parents surveyed said their fathers expressed positive attitudes towards maths, using phrases like “I like numbers” or “I enjoy maths,” whereas only 26% of mums had said similar things. Justine Roberts CBE, Mumsnet founder and CEO, said: "It's clear from this survey that the way mums feel about maths, and how they talk about it with their children, has significant effects… ….it's something that has very real consequences for women in everyday life, from their willingness to talk about finances to their ability to help their kids with homework. We're really pleased to be working with National Numeracy to highlight this issue and help change the narrative around maths for parents and children." Read the full article: https://bit.ly/4fybwgy 👀

National Numeracy reposted this
Delighted to launch National Numeracy’s new strategy in Parliament last night. Honoured to be joined by Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, and for her kind words about National Numeracy’ work and the importance of the issue. A huge thank you to Lord Blunkett for so kindly hosting the event, to DLA Piper for their generous sponsorship and to National Numeracy trustee, Sandra M Wallace, CBE, for helping to make it happen. It was great to have so many of the National Numeracy community in attendance – from partners and supporters to colleagues, trustees and ambassadors. Our new strategy sets out the three Big Changes we are working towards over the next four years. Numeracy for equality, success and community. Please take a look. The strategy builds upon our impact to date. This wouldn’t be possible without the investment of time, energy and crucial funds of our amazing supporters: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Barclays UK Lifeskills, The Barratt Foundation, BGO, Bloomberg, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Capital One, CISI Future Foundation , City & Guilds, Experian, EY, Garfield Weston Foundation, GSA, Kartesia , KPMG UK, The Lord Mayor's Appeal, LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) Foundation, McKinsey & Company, NHS England, Oliver Wyman, S&P Global, Squarepoint Capital, SQUIRE PATTON BOGGS FOUNDATION, TP ICAP, Ufi VocTech Trust and Vanquis Banking Group – a sincere and heartfelt thank you to you all. https://lnkd.in/epnixqrb

Our friend and #MathsAnxiety expert Dr Thomas Hunt gives us the latest on maths anxiety and its correlation with gender. 🔍✨ As with so many barriers to learning, maths anxiety can be tackled by achieving a ‘growth mindset’. 💪📚 In other words, if we believe we can improve. One of the best ways to do that is to tackle the negative, fixed thoughts we have about ourselves. Read more here: https://bit.ly/4evIoW1 #GrowthMindset #Learning #Maths #Education #SelfImprovement

Qualifications aren’t everything, but for Rebecca, getting that pass grade in Functional Skills Maths was proof that she could do it 🎉. This story shows the power of resilience because, after several retakes at #GCSE, Rebecca had to overcome another knock when doing her Functional Skills Maths before finally getting her Level 2 qualification 🏅. To weather the tough times, you have to believe you can get through it. That can be hard when we have bad experiences at school, but it is possible to build up that belief 💪. It can help to find ways to take the pressure off. We’ve got some resources for that on the #NumberConfidenceWeek web page: https://bit.ly/4fjS7jt #Maths #Education #Resilience #StudyTips #Numeracy #FunctionalSkills
