Through Nationwide Fairer Futures, we’ve partnered with Action for Children, because no child deserves to miss out on a safe and happy childhood. For vulnerable children across the UK, Christmas is anything but magical. No presents. No festive food – maybe no food at all. Their memories of Christmas could be going to bed hungry, being too cold to sleep and losing all hope when Santa doesn’t come. Become a Secret Santa with Action for Children and you could help a vulnerable child feel the magic of Christmas. Your donation could give the essentials of warm clothes, a hot meal, or a special Christmas present just for them. Charlotte Kensett, Director of Social Impact said: “Christmas is a time for giving – not just to friends and family but also to charity. Our research shows, more than four in ten people would consider reducing spend on presents in order to give more to good causes. We encourage anyone who can, to support Action for Children’s Secret Santa campaign to give vulnerable children and families hope and support at this time of year. As a mutual, we work for the good of society as well as for the good of our members. Our social impact programme, Nationwide Fairer Futures, aims to change hundreds of thousands of lives for the better.” Donate here: http://spr.ly/6049stSKS #NationwideFairerFutures

Chief Executive Officer at Nationwide Building Society

There was a lot of welcome content and a clear sense of purpose from the Chancellor at the Mansion House last night. I was particularly pleased to hear the distinct role that mutuals play in economic growth being recognised and that a new Mutual and Co-operative Business Council would be at the heart of that.   Customers will benefit from the action that is at last being taken to make sure that tech companies and telcos play a full part in preventing the misery of fraud. For too long the focus has been on refunding victims rather than the collective action needed to prevent it. In every section of her speech, the Chancellor signalled a move towards a simpler regulatory landscape built around the needs of customers rather than the interests of the system.   Overall, some real substance and action on some of the most important topics for financial services. The commitment to the first ever Financial Services Growth and Competitiveness Strategy is an important statement from the Chancellor that she understands our contribution to UK plc and the need to take a long-term view. Nationwide Building Society are proud to sponsor this year's Shaw Trust #DisabilityPower100. The UK’s leading recognition awards for disabled leaders, trailblazers and change makers. A platform for change, it showcases the UK’s most influential disabled individuals and organisations. Celebrating ambition, achievement and impact. Disability inclusion is at the heart of our purpose as a modern mutual; we know that when disabled people are given equal access, it not only works for them, but for society as a whole. We support the government’s call for tech and telecom companies to take more responsibility for online fraud. Debbie Crosbie, our CEO, said: “The money lost to scams is a drag on economic growth and brings misery to thousands. Tech, telcos, banks and law enforcement need to work together to protect people. The Chancellor has recognised that we can only break the fraud chain when we see all of it and I welcome her fresh and joined-up approach.”

According to Nationwide Building Society research, almost half of the population have either experienced domestic abuse, or know someone who has. Given the prevalence of domestic abuse across the UK, as a sector we have a responsibility to our customers to do our part and help prevent abuse where we can. A trip to the shops or the local bank branch can be one of the few times a victim goes unobserved by an abusive partner. That’s why at Nationwide, we've partnered with the abuse prevention specialists Hestia Charity to launch Safe Spaces in over 430 of our high street branches for anyone to use. Find your closest Safe Space: https://lnkd.in/e4m766VU Today, the Building Society Association, has published my article highlighting the importance of Safe Spaces on the high street. Meet Emma, an Engineer at Nationwide involved with organising a crochet poppy appeal, bringing volunteers from across Nationwide together, to support the Royal British Legion. Emma has been running crochet sessions regularly, providing a place for colleagues to learn to crochet, and to chat with like-minded people. Having recently finished making sixty poppies, Emma said: "the crochet poppy appeal brings a new level of personal connection to the cause – rather than buying a poppy each year without a second thought, people will see the dedication of hand crafting and take time to think about the appeal and its impact".
