I still haven’t gotten over the magical experience I got yesterday. This week has been Tech week in Birmingham with yesterday being an event for Women in Tech. And as part of my resolve to grow my network in my transitioning journey into product management, I dragged myself to the event despite all odds. I went in and everywhere was filled already. I said since I was already there, let me stay some more and make something out of it. But the panel of speakers at the time weren’t audible and I couldn’t even grasp a thing of what was going on. After about thirty minutes of hanging around, I said to leave. Went outside but something asked me not to yet so I just sat around. While waiting, I saw a beautiful lady came by the registration stand, registered and went in. She was also a lady of color like myself and really looked like someone I knew. In other to clear my doubts, I walked back into the hall, saw her standing behind as well, walked up to her, we exchanged pleasantries and I discovered she wasn’t who I thought she was. I then told her I was about leaving so I came to make sure she wasn’t the person I was thinking. She asked me not to go yet, that I should wait some more. I obliged. Waited a little again and told her I really can’t take it anymore and I want to leave. And she said noooo… there’s a reason why you didn’t leave the very first time you felt the prompt to, there’s a reason why you met me, there’s a reason why you are here… Pleasse don’t go, I will be speaking after the current panel, wait and hear me out. And I went 😳😳😳 So I sat and waited. Not long after it was her turn to speak. Ladies and gentlemen, nothing prepared me for the fire Emma Mendez spat out yesterday! Yes, she was the one fate led me to yesterday and was the highlight of the event for me. She was my blessing and miracle yesterday. Her presentation caused a shift in my mindset and shed light on my journey. She spoke on women occupying space and participation in Leadership. In my opinion, I think every lady who is career conscious and seeking to climb up the ladder, get delivered from income poverty and be the ‘one’ in every room should have a session with Emma. Emma is gifted to help you see all that is possible and all you can achieve using her story and experience as an example. Thank you again Emma for that powerful presentation yesterday. Emma is a girls girls throughly and she also made sure I met everyone that mattered yesterday. And that was how I met Oyinkansola Adebayo of Niyo Group and CHINAZOR VIVIAN KALU (MIET) , chief program manager at Niyo. To everyone who’s doing their best and striving to best at what they do, this is me saying hang in there, everything will align soon enough for you. You’ll get that job, you’ll get that promotion, you’ll get that miracle. I’m rooting for you 🥂

The importance of funding, diversity, and innovation through collective efforts in any tech sector cannot be undermined, as it creates a positive multiplier effect. Alongside Carmen, WIRED features insights from industry leaders such as Ian Stuart, CEO of HSBC UK; Chris Hayward, chair of the City of London Corporation; Akin Babayigit, Co-Founder of Tripledot Studios; and Oyin Solebo, Founder of Niyo Group. Together, they emphasize the collaborative efforts needed to position the UK at the forefront of global technology. Passionate about impact-led strategies, creating valuable partnerships, and promoting social equity and community development.
#BirminghamTechWeek Literally in bed 🛌 trying to figure out how to cramp all that I have learned during #BirminghamTechweek #TechWM with Suzie Short Bal Loyal 💕💕 The possibilities with technology are limitless, and one of the best parts of today’s rapid innovation is that it’s no longer just for #coders and #programmers. Curiosity and creativity are driving forces, meaning everyone—including *especially*women—are desperately needed to be part of what’s to come. Attending the Women in Tech event was a fantastic experience, and it reminded me why our mission at CyberFirst Northwest and West Midlands - IN4 Group is so meaningful. We believe young people, particularly young girls, should be at the heart of the conversation, seeing their potential in #cybersecurity even if they’re not initially drawn to the technical side. If you’re a school or teacher, there's a fantastic opportunity for your young girls to join the conversation. Next month, the #NCSCGirlsCompetition kicks off, inviting Year 8 girls to team up and tackle problem-solving challenges in cybersecurity. Here are some of my personal highlights from the week: - *Leadership with Authenticity*: Oyinkansola Adebayo , CEO of Niyo Group, inspired me profoundly, showing that I can lead and take up space without compromising who I am—especially as a Black woman. Looking forward to the day you rock those braids to your feet!👏🏾👸🏾👸🏾 - *Lifting as We Climb*: Emma Mendez shared a moving story, encouraging us to claim our space but also reminding us to send the lift back down once we get to the top—or better yet, bring someone along with us. Her phrase “Mi Afe have Confidence” is now on repeat in my head! And yes, Emma, I’ll remember to do the job that pays me (not like the taxi woman!). - *Career Detours Are a Strength*: Claire Downes founder and CEO of Virtual Decisions spoke on the value of treating our career paths like #GoogleMaps—embracing detours along the way. Her work with the justice system and NHS shows how tech can be a powerful tool to tackle social issues affecting young people, proving that innovation and impact can go hand in hand. - *Motivation Beyond Altruism*: One conversation that stuck with me was around avoiding #saviourism approach in encouraging women and girls in tech and generally. Women can go into tech for the same reasons as anyone else—money, interests, and the perks #TechBros enjoy. Doing good is great, but doing it sustainably often requires financial stability too! - Because it’s #Techforgood doesn’t mean it’s cheap or for free. *SHOW AND PAY WHAT IS DESERVED*
