An inspiring visit to OSI London last week from the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) Student Council. We welcomed the Council as part of their UK study trip, connecting with key organisations like Royal Academy of Engineering, Society of Swedish Engineers in Great Britain and the Swedish Chamber of Commerce for the UK. Marika Amartey Kaliff, our Science and Innovation Counsellor, and Evelina Länn, Sweden Promotion Officer, led a discussion on international science and innovation collaboration, including attracting and retaining top talent. The IVA Student Council, representing students and doctoral candidates from 13 Swedish universities, plays an important role in shaping the future of #STEM. Sweden Joins the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO) Yesterday, on behalf of the Swedish Government, Ambassador Stefan Gullgren signed the SKAO Convention at a ceremony at the Swedish Residence in London. This is a momentous step towards joining a global collaboration to build and operate the world's largest radio telescope project. 🔭 The SKA Observatory will revolutionize our understanding of the universe, from the birth of the first stars to the evolution of galaxies. ✨ The Square Kilometre Array is an international endeavor involving numerous countries, uniting the world's leading astronomers, engineers, and scientists. The UK Government has unveiled its AI Opportunities Action Plan, outlining a strategy to enhance the country's position in the global artificial intelligence landscape. The plan, informed by 50 recommendations from AI expert Matt Clifford, focuses on three key areas: 💠 Strengthening the foundation for AI growth: This includes initiatives such as establishing "AI Growth Zones" to expedite development by streamlining planning processes and ensuring reliable energy access for data centers and other AI infrastructure. Additionally, the plan aims to attract and retain top AI talent. 💠 Promoting AI adoption across sectors: The establishment of a Digital Center of Government within the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT) to facilitate the integration of AI technologies within both the public and private sectors. 💠 Maintaining global competitiveness: The strategy emphasizes leveraging the UK's existing strengths in AI, particularly its position as the third-largest AI market globally.
