At the Osiri Matanda gold mine in Kenya, Eunice Atieno is transforming the artisanal mining sector ⛏️. With over 10 years of experience, she is a passionate advocate for mine safety, leading efforts to educate miners including women on the dangers of mercury exposure and promoting the use of protective equipment. Her work continues to empower miners to adopt safer practices and demand fair treatment in a male-dominated industry. Through our RECLAIM Sustainability! Gold project, Eunice has received safety training and Personal protective equipment kits 🦺, enabling her to educate others about responsible mining practices. Despite challenges like low pay, health risks, and gender discrimination, she remains committed to ensuring that women miners can work in safer, equitable conditions. Eunice’s story is a powerful reminder of resilience and community-driven advocacy, as well as the need for inclusive and sustainable mining practices ♻️. We’ve taken significant steps toward unlocking Africa’s vast potential through impactful conversations, strategic partnerships, and groundbreaking events. ⭐ At GABI Conversations, we delved into the transformative power of digitalization as the cornerstone of Africa’s inclusive economic growth and prosperity. Through impactful discussions on bridging the digital divide- addressing skills development, infrastructure expansion, and innovation- we confronted critical challenges with actionable solutions. ⭐ At the 6th African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting in Accra, Ghana, we celebrated the Exchange of Letters of Intent between the African Union Commission and the United Nations Global Compact—a landmark partnership advancing Africa’s sustainable development goals. ⭐ In New York this September, we hosted our flagship Unstoppable Africa event, bringing together global CEOs, presidents, business leaders, fashion icons, creators, and musicians. Over two transformative days, participants engaged in high-level dialogues, forged partnerships, and reaffirmed their commitment to shaping Africa’s growth story. As we look ahead to 2025, we remain steadfast in our commitment to advancing Africa’s economic and social transformation. The first commercialisation of the Albion Process™ for copper happened at Sable Zinc Kabwe Limited in Zambia. After successful testwork, it was determined the existing copper/cobalt plant could be turned into an Albion Process™ plant capable of treating copper/cobalt concentrates. Welcome Antonia Nebo (PhD) as Assistant Director, Administrative Services – Women in Mining Africa (WiM-Africa) Secretariat Antonia brings over a decade of experience in public health, environmental management, and strategic administrative #leadership to her role as Assistant Director, Administrative Services at the WiM-Africa #Secretariat. Having served as a dedicated volunteer with WiM-Africa for over a year, Antonia has demonstrated exceptional commitment to advancing the organization’s mission of empowering #women in mining, fostering gender inclusivity, and promoting #sustainable mining practices across Africa. She currently works on African Development Bank Group (AfDB), IFC - International Finance Corporation (IFC), and other development bank projects across #Africa, ensuring #compliance with Environmental and Social #Safeguards (ESS) standards for #investment projects in the mining sector. Her expertise in program management, policy #implementation, and cross-sectoral #collaboration positions her as a key contributor to WiM-Africa’s administrative and operational #excellence. With a background spanning academia, research, and project execution, Antonia excels in data-driven decision-making, strategic planning, and stakeholder #engagement. She has been instrumental in driving impactful #initiatives, managing multidisciplinary teams, and overseeing complex projects.
