We support families living in the East of England to feel safe and in control of their own wellbeing

About us

Ormiston Families exists today because of one family's tragedy. A young woman, Fiona Ormiston Murray, died whilst on her honeymoon. Fiona loved children and it was no secret that she was excited about starting her own family. Her family, devastated by their loss, wanted to do something to honour her memory. They created a charitable trust, devoted to helping children and families in need. That trust is now known as Ormiston Families. We work with families across the East of England who, for various reasons, need guidance to see a brighter future. By building resilience, we support them to feel safe and in control of their own wellbeing.

  • Overcrowding, violence, drugs - the crisis in prisons is big news. But while debate centres on victims, prisoners and prison staff, the families of someone sent to prison often remain forgotten. At our Breaking Barriers Conference on 26th February, we're bringing together experts including prison reform campaigners, private sector innovators and academics to share expertise and find solutions to an endemic issue. If you are an employer, educator, influence social policy, or provide support directly to families or prisoners, this is a must-attend event, raising money for our Breaking Barriers Winter Appeal. 💚 Buy your tickets today: https://lnkd.in/eGx6wGsF

  • Exciting news - we're hosting our first Breaking Barriers Conference! If you are someone working with children and families affected by imprisonment in the East of England (and beyond), this is a must-attend event. We'll have Paul Cowley MBE , Iceland Foods Director of Rehabilitation speaking about how the company is helping offenders get work after prison and how that strengthens families. David Breakspear will be speaking about his time in prison and the impact it can have on children and families. Isabella Boyce from University of Suffolk will discuss the latest research into rehabilitation and desistance and what works in relation to the importance of family ties and community connections. We'll also have members of our Breaking Barriers service sharing what it is really like for families when a loved one goes to prison. If you are someone passionate about finding solutions to problems in our prison system, and supporting children and families affected by imprisonment, make sure you are there. Book your place here: https://lnkd.in/eT5ij87r #prison #justice #breakingbarriers #prisonreform

  • Huge congratulations to our patron, Saeed Atcha, on this honour. We can't think of anyone more deserving. His work and voice lift young people up everyday and we are so proud to have him in our corner. Well done, Saeed!

😲 What’s it like to receive a 900-year-old honour as a young person? I was a kid in care, now I’m stepping into history.
This week, I had the privilege of receiving the Freedom of the City of London.
It’s one of the oldest surviving traditions, and being part of it as a young person feels extraordinary.
The Freedom of the City has a rich history, dating back to 1237. It originally gave people the right to trade and own property, but today it's about the connection to heritage and civic pride.
 For me, it’s about possibility.
It shows that people from all backgrounds can reach historic milestones. It links the past with the present, reminding us of our shared stories and it’s proof that disadvantage doesn’t define your future - your actions do.
As a kid in care, I could never have imagined moments like this.
To everyone working towards their goals: keep going.
History is shaped by those who dare to step forward.
My thanks to The Clothworkers' Company for their support in making this possible.
