Swatting deadly diseases at the source. 🦟 A new venture is taking on two of the deadliest virus-carrying mosquitos in the Pacific region – Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus – to fight the spread of deadly diseases. Mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, Zika, and yellow fever claim hundreds of thousands of lives globally each year. We've partnered with UK-based company Oxitec Ltd to launch Oxitec Australia. The new venture leverages Oxitec's proven biological Friendly™ platform, which reduces pest females and overall mosquito numbers. We're now seeking partners to accelerate its activities and product development in Australia. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/grRM4qN5

Oxitec Australia is live! 🚀 “In collaboration with Indigenous communities, leading scientific institutions, industry partners and farmers, we’re committed to transforming how pest threats to #health, #FoodSecurity and ecosystems are addressed.” – Oxitec CEO Grey Frandsen. This groundbreaking new venture combines Oxitec’s proven technology platform and expertise and CSIRO’s scientific leadership. #ClimateChange, invasive species and growing pesticide resistance are driving new challenges in Australia and worldwide, including the unprecedented rise of mosquito-transmitted #dengue fever. 2024 has already surpassed the worst year for #dengue cases on record. In Australia, the World Health Organization reports dengue cases this year are 2 times higher than in 2023. “Oxitec Australia offers a unique opportunity to help combat the growing threat of invasive and exotic pests, some of which are on mainland Australia’s doorstep like Aedes albopictus.” Professor Brett Sutton, Director of Health & Biosecurity at CSIRO highlighted. Last week, The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change published their annual report, underscoring the impact of a changing climate on the spread of vector-borne disease, noting in particular the impact on dengue-spreading and malaria-spreading mosquitoes. “This report is a stark reminder that the climate crisis is a health crisis” Grey Frandsen, Oxitec CEO, highlighted. Warmer climates are fuelling the spread of disease at an alarming pace, with 2024 the worse year for #dengue on record. By July this year, records had already been broken, with invasive mosquitoes spreading to new territories and the length of transmission seasons extending. Half the world’s population is currently threatened by the invasive disease-spreading Aedes aegypti, and insecticide-resistant, daytime-biting malaria mosquito Anopheles stephensi continues to invade new territories. Innovative tools are urgently needed to reverse the global rise of vector-borne disease. To combat this growing threat, Oxitec is pioneering innovative solutions which directly target the vector, without leaving a trace on ecosystems. We are scaling technologies which enable us to reduce the number of disease-spreading mosquitoes, and curb their ability to spread diseases such as dengue. With a changing planet, biological solutions like this – in tandem with traditional tools like vaccines, bed-nets, and insecticides – will keep us one step ahead of the threat.
