PAPYRUS is the leading UK charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.
About us
PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide is the UK charity dedicated to the prevention of suicide and the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in young people. Suicide is the biggest killer of people aged 35 and under in the UK. We believe that suicide is preventable. PAPYRUS exists to reduce the number of young people who take their own lives, by shattering the stigma surrounding suicide and equipping young people and their communities with the skills to recognise and respond to emotional distress. We believe that no young person should have to struggle alone with thoughts of suicide. Our suicide prevention helpline, HOPELINE247 is staffed by trained suicide prevention advisers, who work with young people – and anybody concerned for a young person – to help keep them safe from suicide. HOPELINE247 is a free and confidential call, text and email service, which is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year (weekends and bank holidays included). We deliver our suicide prevention education and training packages to thousands of people each year, to create suicide-safer communities across the UK. PAPYRUS envisions a society which speaks openly about suicide and has the resources to help young people who have suicidal thoughts. No young person should have to suffer alone with thoughts or feelings of hopelessness, and nobody should have to go through the heartbreak of losing a young person to suicide. Everyone can play a role in preventing young suicide.

💜 NOVEMBER FUNDRAISING ROUNDUP 💜 Here’s what some of our incredible fundraisers have been up to this month… 14-year-old Ruby completed a 5k walk with support from her tutor Tina. They raised an incredible £115 in loving memory of her friend, Damien. 💜 Maddie’s friends have raised £5694 for PAPYRUS in her memory, by doing a 10 mile hike up (in the snow!) to Kinder Scout in the Peak District. 💜 Greg completed Abingdon Marathon in memory of Nathan, who will never be forgotten. On the day, Greg was cheered on by members of Nathan’s family and raised an amazing £1,165 in aid of PAPYRUS. 💜 After kindly choosing us as their charity of the year, Hewlett Packard hosted a Halloween Fundraiser in aid of PAPYRUS and raised £1,600! 💜 Karen, alongside family and friends, completed their second HOPEWALK this year in memory of Karen’s brother Rob who sadly died by suicide in October 2021. They walked up to the top of Rodney's Pillar in the pouring rain and wind and all managed to complete it (even Alfie age 6, Rob's nephew, who is pictured - what a hero!). They have raised over £400, and we couldn't be more grateful for their ongoing support in memory of Rob! 💜 Debbie organised a cake sale and silent auction at her workplace, Cygnet Health Care, to fundraise for PAPYRUS and other charities. 💜 Following on with the cake theme, Shelley held a bake sale at her workplace and raised a brilliant £341! We love the balloons and PAPYRUS colour cupcakes! 💜 We were delighted to receive a £7000 donation from Crown Commercial Service, who presented their cheque of remaining money from our partnership. They will be donating this during the Big Give week, which takes place between the 3rd – 10th December, meaning their donation will be doubled! 💜 Nate climbed Scafell Pike six times in less than 24 hours raising an amazing £500 for PAPYRUS. 💜 The McKendrick family raised an incredible £10,025 from running the Kielder Marathon in loving memory of Robyn. 💜 Amelia and Frida ran the Richmond Park Half Marathon raising £866. 💜 Jonathan ran the Conwy Half Marathon raising a great £650. He didn’t stop there! He also ran the Bangor 10k and the Abergele 5 & 10k double! 💜 Roberta ran her first ever half marathon and raised an incredible £360 – well done Roberta for these amazing achievements! 💜 Charmaine took part in the CrossFit Bracknell Rowathon and has raised £141 in aid of PAPYRUS. 💜 Young football players from Telford's NC United joined the family of Max Turton in taking part in a fundraising walk in aid PAPYRUS – they have done an amazing job at raising awareness of suicide prevention and helping to save young lives. 💜 Thank you so much to all our incredible fundraisers, we really couldn’t carry on our life-saving work without your support. If you’d like to set up your own fundraising challenge, get it touch with the fundraising team at fundraising@papyrus-uk.org. 💜 #FundraisingFriday #WeArePAPYRUS #SuicidePrevention #CharityFundraising

📣 PAPYRUS WEEKLY ROUND UP📣 The rain, wind, snow – all the different weather across the UK, hasn’t stopped our community teams! It has been another incredible week here at PAPYRUS! Here’s just some of what we’ve been up to… Volunteer Coordinator Stacey and volunteers Robin and Kathryn attended the Army Welfare Service, Spouses and Partners event in Tidworth. This was a chance for military families to learn more about organisations who can offer support, including PAPYRUS. The PAPYRUS team had meaningful conversations with military families and with other organisations who are interested in training and HOPEBOX sessions! Community Development Officer Joe had the pleasure of visiting the Northside Center in Derry to deliver a SPARK session to The Heroes Plus Project. This is a project for young people with a learning disability/additional need or who have excluded from school. It was a great opportunity to spread our message of HOPE and raise awareness of the support young people can access through PAPYRUS. In Leeds, Community Development Officers Chloe and Fiona attended Unipol Student Homes last Wellbeing Roadshow event at Leeds Conservatoire. It was a lovely day speaking to students about HOPELINE247, how to support PAPYRUS and hand out our help and advice resources. Chloe and Fiona have said it’s been so lovely going to the different roadshow events with our volunteers and having a presence at every university campus across Leeds this past month! Community Officer Jenny was invited by Emma and Mark to an event in memory of Emma’s brother Jamie, and to raise awareness of men’s mental health and suicide prevention services that are available. Jenny had lots of conversations with attendees, many of whom thanked her for the work PAPYRUS does and they took resources they could use to signpost. Emma and the team have kindly decided to donate the proceeds of the day to PAPYRUS to help us continue our vital work. In Scotland, Community Development Officer Guy held a SP-ARK session for the Glasgow Caledonian University’s Men’s Rugby team to raise awareness about suicide prevention and how PAPYRUS can support students. Community Development Officer Bally visited the Punjab broadcasting channel studios to take part in the evening health talk which was aired live and was in Punjabi. Punjab broadcasting channel is a Sikh-based TV channel that broadcasts a variety of educational and entertaining content for Sikhs worldwide. It was an incredible opportunity to raise awareness of PAPYRUS and the support we can provide to the Sikh community. Lastly, Bally also delivered a SPOT training session to elected councillors. Our SPOT training focuses on the impact and prevalence of suicide, the language used and how to recognise the signs. It is incredible to work with elected councillors to create suicide-safer communities in their areas! Stay tuned for plenty more suicide prevention updates each week. 💜 #SuicidePrevention #Support #WeArePAPYRUS

Today is #SurivorsOfSuicideLossDay. People talk about grief as a wound, but it’s not the kind of wound that heals over and disappears. Instead, we have to learn to grow around it. But only when we are ready. There is no timeline. For all those who lost a loved one to suicide, take your time. Treat yourself with the same compassion that you have for your loved ones. If you are in need of support, take a moment to read through our list of wonderful charities who can help you through this difficult time. 💜 #SuicideBereavement #BereavementSupport #Grief

This year, PAPYRUS was awarded funding from the Inclusive Communities grant, which was set up to help ensure the positive and long-lasting legacy from the 2022 Commonwealth Games is felt across the region by supporting locally-led projects that unite communities in the West Midlands. This funding has allowed the PAPYRUS England Central team to deliver funded suicide prevention training in the areas of Coventry, Shropshire, Telford, Warwick and Walsall. The training has been delivered to colleges, the NHS, schools, third-sector organisations and more. The funding from the grant has allowed PAPYRUS to reach communities that might not have been reached before, and to build relationships and make connections with a variety of organisations and the response has felt overwhelmingly needed. Join our England Central team at a celebration event on 27 November 2024 at our Birmingham Community hub, to celebrate the amazing work we have been able to achieve due to the funding. The event will include a showcase of feedback from the sessions, a presentation about our services, a wellbeing workshop and some delicious catering. You can sign up to attend the event by using this link: https://lnkd.in/d7G824i9.
