Around a third of all fatal collisions involve someone who is driving for work, meaning fleet operators have a part to play in making the roads safer. The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety manifesto calls for immediate and strategic action to address the persistent issue of road fatalities and serious injuries in the UK. It includes developing a National Road Safety Strategy, establishing a Road Safety Investigation Branch, introducing Graduated Driver Licensing and adopting Advanced Vehicle Safety Regulations. Alongside this, PACTS is calling for companies to consider their cultural maturity around road safety. Speaking at the December Fleet 200 Strategy Network meeting, Jamie Hassall, executive director, PACTS, told delegates: “If you look across the various forms of transport, air and rail are operating at a high level of cultural maturity. Flying is quite dangerous, but they do it really safely. And similarly, on rail, they learn from their mistakes and then try not to repeat them." https://lnkd.in/e9EjUKKM

The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) is calling for further action, including clearer strategies and a consultation on expanded statutory duties, to tackle road deaths and injuries across the UK. NFCC is also urging the UK Government to follow Scotland’s lead and develop a new national road safety strategy for England. It says the strategy should include evidence-based targets for reducing road deaths and serious injuries. It also called on the Welsh Government to expedite its ongoing work on a new road safety strategy.  Executive Director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), Jamie Hassall, added: “We welcome the calls from NFCC to formalise the role of fire and rescue services in preventing road traffic collisions from occurring rather than just focusing on preparing and responding to these incidents – bringing things in line with a Safe System approach. I support the recommendations in the policy position statement and hope to see the Government and devolved administrations take them forwards.” Director of the RAC Foundation, Steve Gooding, commented: “Fire and rescue services bring invaluable knowledge and experience to road safety, from responding to collisions to supporting the delivery of evidence-based initiatives. The UK needs a strategy for dealing with non UK vehicles and drivers. PACTS will be raising this with the Government and DfT. Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom Lilian Greenwood

🚦 Highlighting the PACTS Manifesto in CIHT’s Latest Article 🚦 The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) recently featured the PACTS Manifesto for Road Safety, discussing its potential to shape UK road safety policy. The manifesto, published earlier this year, lays out key priorities for the government to adopt, including: ➡️ A Road Safety Strategy: Setting measurable targets and performance indicators to monitor progress. ➡️ Adoption of General Safety Regulations: Implementing 15 proven vehicle safety measures already adopted across Europe. ➡️ Road Safety Investigation Branch: Introducing a dedicated branch to investigate fatal collisions and improve systemic safety measures. ➡️ Graduated Driver Licensing: Implementing restrictions for new drivers to enhance safety, particularly for younger road users. As highlighted in the article, these proposals aim to ensure road safety remains a national priority, leveraging data, research, and collaboration to reduce road deaths and serious injuries. We also have a shortage of HGV drivers but the solution is not to reduce the age that they can drive but look at why we have a shortage. One major problem is the drivers leaving the profession due to ill health such as diabetes (they are twice as likely to develop it) and related factors. If companies and National Highways improve their work conditions and access to healthy food this would be a good start. The other area that needs to be addressed is we only have a small percentage of female drivers. There was a recent road safety advert in France ‘Drive like a woman’ https://lnkd.in/eR_5Ndce Companies can address shortages by encouraging more women to become drivers and potentially reduce their work-related road risk at the same time.

We have made some changes to the DVSA load security guidance to make it clearer. There is more guidance on carrying out appropriate risk assessments on loads. 📜 We have also included clarification on covering loose loads and some other minor amendments.
