For many young women in Nepal, healthcare services in a time of emergency are simply absent. Luckily, Babita was able to travel to her PHASE Health Post, which was close enough to her home that she didn’t have to endure a long and dangerous journey. She shared: “I had been in extreme pain for more than 9 hours. I know I would have lost my baby if I was not brought here. I now understand how you can save lives. I will tell other pregnant women to seek health worker support.”

Kamala lives in Mugu and was 23 when she discovered she was pregnant with her first child. Whilst attending a regular antenatal health care check-up at her local PHASE Health Post, Kamala tested positive for HbsAg, which indicates a current Hepatitis B infection. PHASE Health Staff explained the condition to Kamala and her husband and advised her to visit the District Hospital at Gamgadhi (Major city of Mugu), where Kamala’s test was reconfirmed as positive. Unfortunately, the local health post in Mugu did not have the necessary facilities to ensure that Kamala had a safe delivery, so advised that she seek further medical attention at a Provincial Health Centre. This was difficult however, due to the lack of transportation during the Covid-19 lockdown. Although Kamala was aware of the importance of attending the medical centre, she was simply unable to afford an alternative means of travel. With support from the PHASE Health Advisors and the PHASE Health Team in Mugu, travel arrangements were made for Kamala and she was able to safely deliver her baby at the Provincial Medical Centre. Kamala said: “I was worried how I would be able to avoid complications for my baby, but now I’m glad that my baby is safe. If I had tried for home delivery, I don’t know what might have happened to me and my baby.”

Govinda is a farmer and a mothers’ group member living in Jima. These are her experiences from our project in Mugu: “We have learned to grow vegetables, to keep our houses hygienic and clean and how to keep our children healthy. Most of all, we have learned to stand-up and do things by ourselves without having to rely on our husbands for money. We have a better voice and positions in our families. Previously, older male members of the society had said we women cannot do anything on our own. Now they are praising us for our achievements. I can confidently say that we have definitely moved forward, as women, with the support from this project”. #PhaseWorldwide

“…now I go to school every day. If I don’t understand something I am not afraid to ask my teacher. I am now involved in every extracurricular activity, and I can solve my problems myself” says Sunita. Through our Girls’ Empowerment Programme in Gorkha, Sunita gained confidence, learned about menstrual hygiene, girls' rights, and standing up to bullying. Once shy and hesitant, she now dreams of passing her Secondary Education Examination (SEE) and becoming a nurse. 🎄 Empower more girls like Sunita and support our campaign! Donate today, and your gift will be matched. Thank you! 👉 https://lnkd.in/effhDcvG #ChristmasChallenge #GirlsEmpowerment #PHASEWorldwide #PHASENepal

Our Big Give Match Appeal starts tomorrow! From 12pm (3rd December) to 12pm on 10th December, your donation will be MATCHED, meaning every pound you give will have twice the impact funding a girls’ empowerment programme in two schools in Rugin. After working with the community for several years now, we have made a significant impact in maternal health and child nutrition. BUT our nurses have told us one root cause of many of the challenges in the health centre is the young age at which girls are leaving school, getting married and ultimately having children before their bodies are ready. That’s why we’re raising funds to run girls’ empowerment sessions in two schools in Rugin. These sessions will build a girl’s confidence to stay in school, delay marriage and avoid early pregnancies. To create lasting, community wide change, boys, local leaders, and parents will also be involved through meetings and street dramas. Your support will make a real difference. Please read more about the impact of child marriage in our blog: 👉 https://lnkd.in/eHsBF3Vy #ChristmasChallenge #GivingTuesday #GirlsEmpowerment #PHASEWorldwide #PHASENepal #GenderEquality

In rural Nepal, attending school is an everyday challenge for many children. Some walk 2-3 hours just to reach their classrooms. Basanti, is a determined young student and shares, “As it’s a rural region, many services are not available here. We study by sitting on the floor, as there are no desks or benches in our school.” For girls there are often even more barriers to education, but Basanti’s dedication is inspiring. She dreams of becoming a doctor one day, and says: “I will become a doctor, and after that, I’ll serve my community.” PHASE supports equal opportunities for all and that’s why in two days our Big Give #ChristmasChallenge will go live to support girls to stay in school. From 3rd December (at noon!) until 10th December (or until match funds are used up) your donation will be doubled if you donate via this link when it goes live! https://lnkd.in/effhDcvG #ChristmasChallenge #GivingTuesday #PHASEWorldwide #PHASENepal #GenderEquality
