Reducing poverty and empowering people by bridging the £23 billion unclaimed support gap in the UK.

About us

Policy in Practice’s mission is to reduce poverty. We believe the welfare system can work more effectively, and help people toward greater independence, if it is simple for people and organisations to understand. Our software helps people on low incomes to understand how changes in welfare policy affects them, so that they can make better decisions and lead more fulfilling lives. Our engine models how the policies of four government departments affect thousand of individual households on low incomes. We use a scientific approach to data visualisation that can drill down to individual households and help people to take control.

  • ☃️ On our third day of Christmas we share how NWG (Northumbrian Water Group) increased household income by £12 million this year! To help customers struggling with water bills, Northumbrian Water implemented a single application process for discounted tariffs across multiple water providers. In the last year over 12,000 applications have been processed, increasing household incomes by £12 million—an average of £100 per household. 💬 Customer Services Manager, Lisa Connell said: "The Better Off Calculator has provided an easy application for our customers to be assessed for our discounted tariffs. Policy In Practice has provided training for our teams so that they can support customers through the journey. They are always happy to help with enhancements and the data we are receiving gives us valuable insight into the demographics of our customers." 🌟 Read their success story here: https://lnkd.in/d73nPUEq

🎁 Day 2 of our 12 Days of Christmas campaign Today we're sharing how City of York Council tackled pension poverty by using the Low Income Family Tracker (LIFT) platform to identify eligible residents and maximise their income. The initiative enabled cross team collaboration, reaching hundreds of households and improving financial security for pensioners. 💬 Pauline Stuchfield, Director of Housing and Communities said: “This Pension Credit Campaign has helped combat rising pensioner poverty and adult social care costs by bringing money to the pockets of pensioners across the area. It’s been a brilliant couple of days at the National Children and Adult Services Conference 2024. A couple of highlights: 📊 Speaking and connecting with people over our Multi-Agency Safeguarding Tracker, which securely shares safeguarding dates between key agencies to protect harm. Policy in Practice 💡 Attending so many incredible workshops and talks. Highlights for me included Norfolk County Council’s incredible work in preventing digital exclusion in our local area, changing lives for the better as a result. I also enjoyed hearing about progress from City of Wolverhampton Council, Walsall Council, and Warwickshire County Council in implementing Families First for Pathfinder, and the sheer amount of multi-agency collaboration involved in this endeavour. 📉 Confirmation from the Department for Education that the government intend to legislate to introduce a unique identifier for every child. This will be a game changer for information-sharing between professionals. 💚 Spending time with great people like the wonderful Abigail Everett, Sam Fathers, and Hannah McCowen. 🌆 Exploring and getting to know Liverpool, which has felt like a home away from home.

Director of Policy in Practice. We make policy work for people on the frontline. Built the Universal Benefit Calculator

Big Social Care post today as Policy in Practice meet with colleagues Kingston University, University of Sussex, National Children's Bureau for our first in person meeting for a project looking at the relationship between financial precarity and childrens social care demand. At the same time, Abigail Everett Sam Fathers and Jennifer Downie attend their first #NCASC conference to share our work on children's safeguarding with #MAST now live in South Wales and our recently launched ability to bring #SocialCare data into LIFT. Our research shows that while while neglect and household finances are clearly separate - however financial stresses also clearly feed into a families ability to cope with other pressures. Huge thanks to Nuffield Foundation for their support in helping us to find answers to these crucial challenges.
