We're delighted to share this new evaluation of our Power2 Rediscover programme. We know from the feedback we receive from children and young people, their parents and teachers that the programme improves their wellbeing - but it's so great to have confirmation of that from external experts! Pro Bono Economics is hosting a webinar on Thursday 6th March 4-5pm to explore the findings of the report further, and we'd love for you to join us! https://lnkd.in/ehxVGEun
🔔 Our new report shows the close links between school attendance, low wellbeing, and poor belonging in young people. 1 in 4 (25%) 15-year-olds in the UK report low wellbeing. Among those who skip classes, that figure rises to 34%. And for those who don’t feel a sense of belonging at school, it jumps to 42%. School absence isn’t just about missing lessons—it’s tied to lower academic achievement, mental health struggles, fewer social connections, and worse job prospects. In fact, only half of students with attendance below 90% meet the expected standard in reading, writing, and maths at KS2. This complex interaction is reflected in rising concerns around Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)—when a child struggles to attend school due to emotional distress. EBSA could be affecting a significant number of children, contributing to the doubling of persistent absence since the pandemic. This new report for Power2 explores how targeted one-to-one support can help young people to thrive. The Power2 Rediscover programme provides 10 intensive sessions to boost confidence, communication, and engagement at school. Since 2020, it has supported over 500 children in London and the North West across 87 schools. The impact? 📌 Pupils who participated in Power2 Rediscover could improve wellbeing by the equivalent of 1.2 Life Satisfaction points (on a scale of 0-10). 📌 As long as the wellbeing impact lasts for at least 5 weeks, the programme is likely to be value for money. 📌 If the wellbeing benefits last just 6 months, the programme generates £5 in wellbeing benefits for every £1 spent. With youth wellbeing in decline and continuing low school engagement, it’s clear we need solutions that work. Schools, funders, and policymakers must collaborate with charities to ensure struggling children get the right support at the right time.
