The Yield Enhancement Network (YEN) connects agricultural organisations and farmers who are striving to improve crop performance. Networks are open to any grower who may be interested and involves growers sending a sample of their crop for a comprehensive analysis of their crop, measuring crop growth, potential yield, and soil health among other factors. Current YEN members should be aware that samples for the pea and bean YENs should be sent in as soon as possible. The PGRO is proud to have charitable objectives around both research and education. Part of the education policy includes co-sponsoring a programme of PhDs as and when funds are available. Two new PhD studentships are open to applications through CTP for Sustainable Agricultural Innovation. Beginning in October 2025, prospective recruits can apply for a project exploring how faba beans boost soil health, improve yields, and enhance resilience (project 082), or explore how different cover crops in faba bean rotations boost yields, fight pests, and improve soil health while supporting SFI policies (project 088). Students will be registered and based with the University of Nottingham with fieldwork opportunities at The James Hutton Institute and PGRO. The NCS Project recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, but the work is still just beginning. British On-Farm Innovation Network (BOFIN) is still encouraging more forward-thinking farmers and growers to become Pulse Pioneers and take part in paid on-farm trials as part of the NCS Project. There are a variety of trials that growers can get involved in, including trials exploring soil health, the potential of different varieties of pulses, and sustainable slug control. Growers are entering an important time for planning their rotation ahead of planting and may be considering entering a Sustainable Farming Initiative (SFI) agreement. To keep them in the know about the possible impact of the SFI, Dr. Becky Howard has written a comprehensive report outlining how a number of options could affect the viability of pulses in the rotation. Dr. Howard’s review particularly outlines the potential risks of entering an SFI agreement, with a large focus on the large risk of disease that SFI could bring.
