  • PurplePOV: Meta’s shift in factchecking – the ripple effects for digital trust Recent changes to Meta’s policies on content policing across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads has been making headlines this week. The change marks a pivotal shift in how misinformation is managed—or not managed—on these platforms. By removing factcheckers in the US and introducing a “community notes” system akin to Elon Musk’s approach on X, Meta has ignited global debate. For brands, this shift presents both challenges and opportunities. With over three billion users, Meta’s platforms are critical communication channels. However, these updates raise serious concerns about the spread of unchecked misinformation, harmful narratives, and the impact on user safety. European and UK lawmakers have expressed alarm, noting potential violations of digital safety standards like the EU’s Digital Services Act. Additionally, the removal of professional oversight could leave vulnerable groups—such as children and teenagers—more exposed to harmful content. For businesses, this creates an unpredictable landscape where maintaining trust and credibility is more important than ever. At Purplefish, we see this as a call for brands to step up their role in combating misinformation. Relying solely on platforms to ensure truth and safety is no longer viable.     On Friday I watched a wonderful drone light show from Celestial and Yuup in Bristol. The show, at Gloucestershire Cricket’s Seat Unique Stadium, was A Christmas Carol narrated by actor Matt Lucas. During the stunning 45 minute performance, the drones created scenes from the classic story including the characters of Scrooge and Tiny Tim. It’s truly amazing what those little machines can do!
