About us
Quartet Community Foundation changes people's lives for the better across the West of England, giving as many people as possible the chance to fulfil their potential. We match the interests of donors - people, companies and charitable trusts - to vital projects that meet the needs and aspirations of our communities and make a profound difference to people's lives. Quartet is an independent charity and we're unique in our area. Originally founded in 1987 we serve a population of 1.1 million people in the four unitary authority areas of Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. We are part of a national network of 47 quality accredited Community Foundations that match those who want to give money locally with good causes and charities working to improve local communities. We're responsive and strategic grant-makers, community leaders in the third sector and – most importantly – advocates for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in our communities, nurturing both the joy of giving and inspiring further action. Over the past 35 years we have made grants of over £66 million and built a permanent endowment of over £59 million. We distribute around 1,000 grants each and every year to voluntary and community groups across the West of England and we produce an annual Vital Signs report that assesses local needs and guides decisions about where philanthropy can make the most impact.

🔎 Read our 2024 annual report below to hear first-hand from local charitable organisations and fund holders about the impact of local funding on communities in #Bristol, #BathandNES, #NorthSomerset and #SouthGloucestershire. Almost 90% of the grants we awarded in the last 12 months were £5,000 and under, and three-quarters of our grants supported local charitable organisations with annual incomes under £500,000. Small grants make a huge difference. They help sustain vital services, cover running costs, test new ideas or help groups leverage significant additional funding from other sources. We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Anna Smith to the position of CEO. Anna will be a familiar face to many through her 30 year career in the non-profit sector, including her most recent position as CEO at Bristol Drugs Project, and formerly at One25. Anna says “I am thrilled to be joining the strong and committed team at Quartet. I have watched the organisation from afar for many years from positions as a leader in the sector in South Gloucestershire and Bristol and as a resident of BANES. I want to bring this experience and my passion for communities and social justice to Quartet, so that we can do more for more people in the West of England. Let’s get going!” The Board and staff are very much looking forward to Anna officially joining the Quartet team on 20th January 2025 and would like to thank Ronnie Brown for his leadership as interim CEO. We’re delighted to be announced as one of the Inaugural Cohort of Tech4Good South West Champions. At Quartet, we’re passionate about building relationships with tech businesses and entrepreneurs who want to drive social change in the West of England, together with Tech4Good South West and other partners. As a local funder, our focus is on the support we give to small, charitable organisations through grants and pro bono support (ProHelp). We recognise that tech has a crucial role to play in our communities which is why we’ve made approximately £1.7m in grants over the last five years to help address issues such as digital inclusion in our region. Discussing the benefits and and positive experiences of working with #CommunityFoundations, Philanthropy Impact's, John Pepin, and our interim CEO, Ronnie Brown, spoke openly with national charities, financial advisers, legal firms and donors about their experiences. And Many thanks to RWK Goodman for hosting us. Quartet Community Foundation, UK Community Foundations,
What are the personal benefits and social values of setting up a donor advised fund for your community? This week, I attended an event in Bristol hosted by Philanthropy Impact's CEO, John Pepin, that featured a panel of donors and philanthropy advisers, including Quartet Community Foundation's interim CEO, Ronnie Brown. In the room was a mix of local and national charities, financial advisers, legal firms and interested individuals wanting to give back. What I found really exciting was the eagerness from everyone to talk about their positive experiences working with #CommunityFoundations, with one donor stating how "non-salesy" they are, "they just get on with doing good". Another donor said, "We've been learning about multi-year funding grants. We've got an endowment fund and a revenue fund - the endowment fund will go beyond our lives. The community foundation knows the people on the ground, the resources needed and they're very good at telling us what's necessary. For me, there's no point in having funds sitting there and not doing anything." All good things start with a conversation: 🌱 https://lnkd.in/ez85SNUG #FinancialAdvise #Philanthropy #WealthManagement

We’re proud to work with Bristol Energy Cooperative and LOW CARBON GORDANO LIMITED to administer their Megawatt Community Energy Fund, set up in 2017 using profits from their business activity. The fund awards grants of up to £4,000 to small charitable organisations who are taking action on reducing carbon in our atmosphere and making energy more affordable to help reduce fuel poverty. We recently awarded £42,872 in grants on their behalf to 12 important projects across South Gloucestershire, Bristol, North Somerset and Sedgemoor District (Somerset). You can read more about them here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eg6DVips To find out more about setting up your own fund, either as an individual or a business, please get in touch with ronnie.brown@quartetcf.org.uk or Sabita Ravi or visit our website https://lnkd.in/eMYCNVkn #Quartet #WestOfEngland #CharitableGiving
