Meet the Class of 2024! Meet Lance Miller, Team Lead at the Mifflinburg Innovation Works! 1. Why did you choose to participate in LSV? LSV provides opportunity to broaden the depth of understanding of other teams, industries, and geographic areas of the Valley. Strengthening that knowledge and connections will be valuable to furthering the goals of Miff Works. 2. How are you currently involved in your local community? Our team makes an effort to volunteer with the major non-profit organizations in Mifflinburg, namely: Christkindl, MHRA, the Buggy Museum, and the Community Park Action Project, amongst others as events and opportunities arise. Personally, I try to hop on projects and teams where my skills add comparative value or where there are specific needs that have been communicated to me along with an ask for engagement. 3. What do you want to gain from your LSV journey? Similar to "why did I choose to apply to LSV", connections and knowledge. Scott Harrison: A Story of Redemption, Compassion, and a Mission to Bring Clean Water to the World Scott Harrison, the founder of charity: water, embarked on a remarkable journey that transformed countless lives. After a decade immersed in the nightlife scene as a nightclub promoter, Scott experienced a profound shift. He declared spiritual, moral, and emotional bankruptcy, seeking a new purpose. His path led him to a hospital ship off the coast of Liberia, where he witnessed the devastating effects of dirty water firsthand. The stark reality of communities suffering due to lack of access to clean water ignited a fire within him. Scott returned to New York City with a mission: to eradicate the global water crisis. In 2006, he established charity: water, a groundbreaking organization with an audacious goal: to provide clean water to every person living without it. Scott’s vision extended beyond mere charity; he aimed to reinvent the concept of giving. Here’s how he did it: 100% Model: Scott pioneered a radical approach. Every dollar donated would directly fund water projects. Administrative costs? Covered by separate donations. Transparency was paramount, and donors could track the impact of their contributions. 137,000 Water Projects: Over the years, charity: water has raised over $750 million and funded more than 137,000 water projects across 29 countries. These projects will ultimately benefit 17.4 million people with clean, safe drinking water. Thirst: Scott’s inspiring personal story is captured in his book, “Thirst: A Story of Redemption, Compassion, and a Mission to Bring Clean Water to the World.” All net proceeds from book sales contribute to the cause. FCS - Focused Community Strategies was lucky. We were lucky because when we were invited to South Atlanta, there was already a deeply woven social fabric in place. A group of interconnected and united leaders, all legacy neighbors, invited FCS to come and collaborate with Historic South Atlanta. They already knew their neighborhood. They loved it. They wanted to speak into its future and they wanted a partner. Were they all on the same page in terms of viewpoints or politics? Not at all. But they were united in their care for one another and their community. They raised their families together. They checked in on each other. They had the kinds of deep relationships and vision for their neighborhood that a program can never create. And they used all of that hard-won and vital connectedness to open doors for FCS. Without people like The Springs, Ms. Walker, Ms. Partridge, The Haygood family, and others, we would have floundered or worse – brought harm and more inequity to Historic South Atlanta. But we were lucky. They made us lucky by being honest with us, sharing their vision, paving the way for us with others, and telling us when we were going off track. I think of this group of leaders when I think of why social connectedness is so important – both for place-based development work and flourishing in general. Every neighbor can be an agent of change. But a group of neighbors united in a common vision is catalytic. Wherever you are in your neighborhood, look for these groups of neighbors with vision. This month marks a pivotal moment in history — the 56th anniversary of the signing of the Fair Housing Act. As we commemorate this landmark legislation, we also reflect on the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose unwavering commitment to equality and justice paved the way for its passage. In the wake of Dr. King's tragic assassination, the Fair Housing Act emerged as a beacon of hope, a tangible step toward dismantling the barriers of discrimination in housing. Yet, over five decades later, our work is far from finished. The vision Dr. King articulated, of a nation where all are judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character, remains elusive for far too many. Just last year, NFHA reported that there were over 33,000 fair housing complaints throughout the country-the highest number of reported complaints since we've been tracking this data. Moreover, millions of incidents of discrimination go unreported, particularly as we now tackle the new frontier of technology and algorithmic bias. As Dr. King reminded us, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." It is up to us to bend that arc, to continue the fight for fair and inclusive housing for all.
