Our weekly grants showcase, as part of our support for White Ribbon Day, is Refuge which is England’s largest single provider of specialist domestic abuse and gender-based violence services. Every 2 minutes someone turns to Refuge for help. When Refuge launched the first safe house for women and their children in Chiswick, West London back in 1971, domestic abuse was seen as black eyes and broken bones. It is now not limited to physical violence and includes tech abuse, economic abuse, sexual abuse, coercive control, psychological abuse, and post-separation abuse. Today, the charity's vision is for a world where domestic abuse and violence against women and girls is not tolerated, and where women and children can live in safety. In 2022 the Randal Charitable Foundation provided significant grant funding to cover the cost of one support worker for the Chinese Outreach in London. This grant provided support over a 12 month period for 25 to 30 women, men and children who have experienced domestic abuse. Sarcoma UK is a national charity that funds vital research, offers support for anyone affected by sarcoma cancer and campaigns for better treatments. They are the only cancer charity in the UK focusing on all types of sarcoma, which is a rare cancer that accounts for around 1% of all cancer diagnoses. The charity has a vision where everyone affected by sarcoma cancer has the treatment, care and support they need. They are also focused on creating the treatments of tomorrow. To achieve this, the charity drives awareness of sarcoma cancer, funds research, provides information and support to those living with sarcoma, and campaigns for better treatments and to improve standards of care. Sarcoma UK was founded in 2011 by Roger Wilson CBE, a sarcoma patient, as a single charity for sarcoma patients, carers and relatives, which united the Sarcoma Trust and Sarcoma UK. Since 2011, the charity has invested around £8 million into scientific and medical research across 98 different research projects. They have also helped more than 5,000 people through the Sarcoma UK support line, as well as worked with national governing bodies, sarcoma specialist centres and many others to advocate for better and earlier treatments for people affected by sarcoma. Today, the charity remains relatively young, but has evolved into an organisation fit for the challenges of the sarcoma community. They are staffed by a talented, growing team, managed by a board of trustees, comprising a balanced mix of those with personal experience of sarcoma and those that bring other specialist skills, while being supported by experts in the sarcoma field. The significant funding provided by the Randal Charitable Foundation in 2024 will help strengthen the charity's crucial Support Line, which provides guidance and support to sarcoma patients and their loved ones. Sarcoma is a rare and complex form of cancer, and the Support Line is a vital resource for those navigating diagnosis, treatment, and the emotional impact of their condition. Over the past year, Sarcoma UK UK's confidential Support Line has received over 5,000 contacts, highlighting its essential role for the sarcoma community. One of our core focus areas is to support specific community interest projects that aid women and girls at serious risk of violence or exploitation. This White Ribbon Day, we're joining the campaign which this year is focused on 'encouraging men to hold themselves accountable to women, and to each other, so positive behaviour change can transform harmful cultures'. Gender equality is key to making this culture change happen, and we believe gender equality is achievable if men and boys understand and assume their responsibility as allies. Please take a moment to watch this powerful video, entitled 'It Starts With Men', which is calling for people to come together to prevent violence against women and girls. https://lnkd.in/ePJNwnTE #SavingLives #RandalFoundation #WhiteRibbonDay #WhiteRibbonDay2024 #SexualAbuse #SexualViolence #ViolenceAgainstWomenandGirls #humantrafficking #SexualExploitation #charitablegiving #charitabletrust #charitablefoundation #healthcareforall Rachael McCormack Dr Nik Kotecha OBE DL

A key focus area for our Foundation is helping the most in need in-order-to prevent suicides, which claim thousands of lives each year in the UK alone. International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day is this week (23 Nov) and is a global event in which survivors of suicide loss come together to find connection, understanding, and hope through their shared experience. Also known as Survivor Day, the day brings those affected by suicide together for healing and support. Survivor Day always falls on the Saturday before the American Thanksgiving festival, as holidays are often a difficult time for suicide loss survivors. Examples of the Randal Charitable Foundation's work in this area includes significant support for technology development of a suicide prevention app, the provision of a text service for vulnerable young people and face-to-face appointments with mental health volunteers, as well as support with service and staffing costs to enable the life-saving work of mental health and suicide prevention charities to continue. Our weekly grants showcase is PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide, as part of our spotlight on prevention of suicide and the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing. PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide exists to reduce the number of young people who take their own lives, by shattering the stigma surrounding suicide and equipping young people and their communities with the skills to recognise and respond to emotional distress. They do this because suicide remains one of the biggest killers of young people in the UK, and the charity believes that suicide is preventable. After the Covid-19 lockdowns the Randal Charitable Foundation worked in partnership with PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide to commission an inspirational video with award-winning musician Rekesh Chauhan to highlight the often hidden challenges so many people face, as well as the wide-range of help and support available. Congratulations to all of the winners of the Great British Entrepreneur Awards & Community! It was great to have collaborated with Great British Entrepreneur Awards & Community to create a brand-new category of award this year - the Randal Foundation Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Designed to champion entrepreneurs creating social impact at scale - and whose ventures embody our core mission: 'to save lives, improve life chances, and contribute positively to communities'. This award serves to recognise entrepreneurs who have not only achieved measurable commercial success, but also made a meaningful positive impact on society. This is something our Chairman and Founder, Dr Nik Kotecha OBE DL is keen to champion, “people’s needs aren’t just material, they aren’t simply transactional. As we go through our lives, we all have need from time to time for innovations, support services and responsively designed goods which help us tackle the hurdles that can crop up in life. Entrepreneurs who respond to these challenges, and bring forward solutions which help their communities, and our wider society should be celebrated - equally to those who drive market successes. Our award recognises the very special contribution made by many outstanding socially focussed and community-minded, talented business leaders.” Well done to all the very deserving nominees in this category, and we were thrilled for this year's award to be presented to James Tweed Dr. Aaron Lin Dr Tom Adler Ray Boulger Gillian Ashcroft Dave Linton Cecilia Righini Joshua Sprigg @Alan Foster, Darren Briggs Randal Charitable Foundation Rachael McCormack Dr Nik Kotecha OBE DL

As part of our spotlight on the scourge of bullying, our weekly grants showcase is Leicester based safeguarding charity Warning Zone. The charity’s mission is to deliver life-saving messages to children aged 10-11, catching them on a key transition in their lives as they venture into secondary schools, where they will meet new friends and are introduced to new experiences. At Warning Zone’s state-of-the-art Life Sciences Skills Centre in Leicester, they aim to educate young people on understanding risks, peer pressure, anti-social behaviour and consequences. With the internet and online presence being so widely accessed from a young age, their E-Safety Zone educates children on cyber-bullying, grooming, scammers and much more. In 2021 the Randal Charitable Foundation provided a significant grant to Warning Zone for engagement with children and young people about the risks associated with cyber and the internet, which funded 1,630 high quality training sessions in a specialised, safe and interactive environment. Funding was also provided towards improvements to the Life Sciences Skills Centre.
