🔈Last year, we partnered with Carbon Rewild, a company at the forefront of innovation in biodiversity data collection, to trial bioacoustic recorders as a scalable, low-cost solution for monitoring changes in bird communities over time🔈 🌱Working with our clients across 6 pilot sites, we designed and implemented biodiversity monitoring programmes to establish biodiversity baselines - a critical first step for measuring and tracking improvements in biodiversity over time. Baselines not only help organisations quantify and guide restoration efforts but are also fundamental for generating verified nature-positive claims. 🌱The Wallacea Trust Methodology requires biodiversity quantification across a basket of five metrics - we used the bioacoustic recorders to measure bird diversity as one of these metric components. 🌱Bioacoustic recorders, provided by Carbon Rewild, offer robust and reliable data collection while remaining cost-effective and easy to use. Designed to empower landowners and citizen scientists, these devices can be deployed by non-experts in the field, making biodiversity monitoring accessible to all. Key Highlights from the Pilot Studies: 🎤 32 bioacoustic recorders deployed across 6 study sites 🐦 115 bird species detected 🔴 29 species listed on the BOCC5 Red List 🌱This collaboration has demonstrated bioacoustic technology's potential to transform biodiversity monitoring, offering advanced ecological insights in a scalable, affordable way. 🤝 rePLANET are proud to partner with Carbon Rewild - we look forward to advancing these innovative approaches to biodiversity conservation together! #BiodiversityMonitoring #CarbonRewild #Innovation #Conservation #NaturePositive

🌿📸 The biodiversity credits panel at the ESG Investor 'Nature Data for Institutional Investors' event a few weeks ago! This panel was a great opportunity to explore how biodiversity credit markets can learn from the carbon markets - key takeaways were that market growth can be supported by: ◻️ Ensuring projects have additional and verifiable impacts - strong standardisation and verification processes are a must - this will increase buyer confidence in project claims and avoid low-quality initiatives devaluing credits and market integrity ◻️ Utilising efficient methods of creating, storing and recording biodiversity credits - this is key for enabling credits to be purchased, sold and retired efficiently and transparently e.g. by using blockchain technology ◻️ Increasing clarity and unity within the market - a shared definition of a biodiversity unit of gain should support with this 💡 All in all this was a great event and rePLANET look forward to more discussions and progress around biodiversity credit markets in the New Year! #NaturebasedSolutions #BiodiversityMarkets #LessonsLearned #BiodiversityCredits #CarbonMarkets

🪲Invertebrates are pivotal to ecosystem function, driving key processes such as nutrient cycling, pollination and soil formation. 🐝Representing up to 90% of animal species on Earth, they are key for stability and resilience of ecosystems - for example, ~80% of all flowering plants and ~75% of global crop species depend on invertebrate pollination. 🦋Preserving invertebrates is therefore critical for maintaining terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystem services that sustain both natural and human systems. 🐞This is why invertebrate surveys are integral components of rePLANET biodiversity monitoring programmes. #EcosystemFunction #Invertebrates #Biodiversity #Pollination

🌍🌱 World Soil Day: The Power of Soil Carbon Sequestration 🌱🌎 'World Soil Day' highlights one of the most effective, yet often overlooked, tools in the fight against climate change: soil carbon sequestration. Soil is not just the foundation of our food systems - it’s also a critical carbon sink. Why is soil carbon sequestration so important?🍃 ◻️ Soils have the potential to store significant amounts of carbon - at present the top 2m of soil globally hold 5x the carbon found in all terrestrial vegetation - making them one of the largest natural carbon reservoirs ◻️ Increasing organic matter through practices like no-till farming and agroforestry can capture and store carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere ◻️ Restoration of our degraded soils could sequester several billion tonnes of carbon, a crucial step in achieving net-zero goals What can we do to support soil carbon sequestration?🍃 ◻️ Advocate for regenerative agriculture that improves soil health and carbon storage - this alone could lock up 23 gigatonnes of CO2 by 2050 ◻️ Support policies and initiatives that encourage soil carbon measurement, management, and restoration. ◻️ Educate others about the importance of soil in the global carbon cycle and its potential to help combat climate change. 💡Several rePLANET projects have incorporated regenerative agriculture elements into their design and support soil restoration e.g. through creation of rotational grazing systems. We commit to preserving and enhancing soil quality and carbon content in our projects for a more sustainable future. #WorldSoilDay #SoilCarbon #RegenerativeAgriculture #SoilHealth

Why monitor bird populations?🪶 🦅Birds are key indicators of terrestrial ecosystem health - they react quickly to environmental change (e.g. degradation and restoration) and their diversity and abundance provides critical insight into habitat quality 🌿Birds act as ecosystem engineers, pollinators and seed dispersers by creating structures such as nest cavities, visiting flowers and spreading the seeds within the fruit they consume 🔎They are an extensively studied taxa - 16,000 bird-related scientific papers are published each year - plus there are well established ornithological survey methods that can be adopted 📈An abundance of long-term ornithological data enables detection of bird population change over time which is key for biodiversity monitoring programmes 💡To find out more about how and why we survey birds as part of our biodiversity monitoring strategy and to learn about our Nature-based Consultancy services, click here: https://lnkd.in/eQAtic5h
