🌍 Living Lakes Network Calls for Nature-Based Solutions, Biodiversity Conservation, and Community-Led Wetland Restoration 🌍 As the world gathers for COP29, the Living Lakes Network is amplifying its call for Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) to address the intertwined challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss. Wetlands and lakes are critical ecosystems capable of storing three to five times more CO₂ than tropical forests, shielding communities from floods and droughts, and providing essential resources for nearly a billion people. In our latest Position Paper, endorsed by over 130 organizations across 60 countries, we’re calling on global leaders to: 🌿 Prioritize Wetland Restoration as a core climate solution, integrating it into national climate plans to meet the 1.5°C target under the Paris Agreement. 🐾 Enhance Biodiversity Conservation, as protecting wetlands also safeguards countless species and ecosystems. 🤲 Support Community-Led Efforts, empowering indigenous peoples, local communities, women, and youth who are on the front lines of ecosystem stewardship. 💰 Boost Climate Finance for wetland restoration, especially in developing nations where these ecosystems are crucial for livelihoods and resilience. 👌🏼¡Con resultados satisfactorios y perspectivas muy alentadoras concluyó la primera edición de Reforesta Chapala 2024! 🌱🌳 Se llevó a cabo del 13 de junio al 25 de agosto, en los municipios de Jocotepec, Chapala, Poncitlán, Ocotlán y La Barca. Las tareas de reforestación se realizaron en la parte alta de la cuenca del lago -en las Sierras de Chapala- con el propósito de restaurar zonas forestales de gran importancia, ya que captan agua que abastece cuerpos superficiales y mantos freáticos, retienen suelo y evitan la erosión. 🌱Los resultados 2024🌱 ✳️ Reforestación de 31 hectáreas (28 ha en zonas de ganadería regenerativa y 3 ha de restauración forestal) ✳️ 8,620 árboles plantados de especies nativas de la zona como tepehuaje, guaje, palo dulce, ceiba, amole, rosa morada, parota, tepame, huizache, guamúchil y encino. ✳️ 6 instituciones participantes. ✳️ 687,000 pesos de inversión. ¡La vinculación entre el lago y la cuenca es total: no puede existir un lago sano en una cuenca degradada!
