Over the next few weeks this field will be transformed into a lovely new riverside woodland. This site is at Fishwick Bottoms, Preston and, although you can't see it on this picture, it's right next to the main River Ribble. At the moment, we're planting a series of 30 specimen trees with the help of our contractors D&A Landscapes. After Christmas, we'll be adding in whips, which are the smaller trees we usually use. Our latest woodland is complete! Thanks to the hard work of our amazing volunteers (and the odd mince pie!) we've managed to finish this site at Waddington before Christmas. Woodlands like this one start to improve the local environment almost immediately, taking in excess nutrients, capturing sediments, and improving soil quality which all contribute to healthier watercourses. In time, they'll also provide habitats for wildlife, capture carbon, and connect up existing parcels of woodland and hedgerows. Have you seen our new interpretation panels at Fishwick Bottoms? 🐟 We have installed two new panels at both entrances to Fishwick Bottoms detailing the recent works we have been undertaking on site to help prevent flooding and bank erosion. Trees add structure to the banks, filter out pollutants, regulate climate, provide shade for fish, and create habitat for all kinds of wildlife. Wassailing is the traditional Saxon custom of welcoming in a good harvest for the year, which has been celebrated for hundreds of years with storytelling and merry-making. This year, Ribble Rivers Trust and the National Trust have teamed up to deliver a day of festive activities. The day will begin with a guided history and nature walk at 10am, led by National Trust's David who manages the site. You will explore the how the hall came to be, the people who lived in it, and it's relationship to the river Caulder. At 1pm we will be holding a family-friendly natural crafts session in the walled garden, using natural willow to create wreaths and other willow crafts, as well as other crafts activities such as nature-themed colouring, elf/gnome making, and badge making. At 4pm we will gather for a fire-lit session of folktales, all relating to our rivers both worldwide and locally. This will be accompanied by festive food and refreshments such as mulled apple juice and marshmallows.
