Wrapping up 2024 with a guest post in Travel Weekly UK from our CEO Kathy Atkinson on a topic that epitomises the work we do. Many of the most worrisome risks in travel are those that we don’t even think of as risks. The safety data we gather from our Safer Tourism Pledge Partners tells at least one story time and time again - the most common risks are not the ones making the headlines. People tripping and falling, or getting a dodgy tummy while on holiday always make up the biggest proportion of incidents. Most of the time, the impact - on both the traveller and the provider - is relatively minor. But sometimes, a fall can lead to a broken hip, or a serious head injury. What starts as a stomach ache can lead to dehydration and hospitalisation. We work to identify, prevent and warn travellers about the risks that come with travel. And to make sure we do all in our power to keep them safe and well. Our partners, the media and the wider travel industry play a big role in helping us achieve our goal. So thank you! Special shout-out to Robin Searle and Samantha Mayling for covering every Safer Tourism announcement this year. We appreciate it. Have a happy - and SAFE - holiday!! PS: if you’re planning on taking nuts with you, wherever you go this festive season, please be conscientious 😊 🥜 PPS: if someone asks for non cow-milk, please don’t moan about it. Just find an alternative 🐄 #safetravel #2024wrap #festivetips #risk

Do you know someone with a potentially life-threatening food allergy? According to our research, one in four of us do. That's because allergies in the UK are on the rise, especially in children. Hospital admissions for anaphylaxis caused by food allergies have more than doubled in the last 20 years. We wanted to understand how much of an impact this rise in allergies was having on travel. And our research revealed that 1 in 7 UK travellers is affected by severe food allergies on holiday. Our Safer Tourism incident data also shows this to be an area of concern. With all of this in mind, you might expect more incidents of anaphylaxis on airplanes. But people with potentially life-threatening allergies are experts in managing the risks to themselves, with 2 in 3 telling us they take extra precautions when they travel. Even so, incidents do happen. Just this year, DJ and Love Island star Jack Fowler had a severe reaction after eating a curry containing cashews on a flight, even after repeatedly telling crew he had a potentially life-threatening allergy. BBC broadcast reporter (and new Safer Tourism brand ambassador!) Georgie Palmer (she/her) was escorted off a plane with her nut-allergic daughter because the airline's written policy was not aligned with the actions taken by ground staff and flight crew. We believe it's time to do better, and the responsibility shouldn't lie solely with allergic travellers. So this week, we launched a new campaign focused on making travel safer for people with potentially life-threatening food allergies. "Put the Nuts Away" has three very reasonable asks of airlines: 1. Airlines should have clear, transparent and publicly available policies on how they manage travellers with potentially life- threatening allergies (or be transparent if they can't manage them). This way travellers can choose who they travel with. 2. Airlines should apply their policies consistently across the traveller journey (what is written on a website should be what happens at the gate, and on the flight). Don't say you'll do one thing and then do another. 3. Airlines should adopt CAA guidance to carry a minimum of two (in-date) auto-adrenaline injectors and ensure crew are trained on how to use them. Schools can do it, surely airlines can too. We're building on the amazing work being done by Dr Paul Turner, Professor of Anaphylaxis Research at Imperial College London. Paul's research led to the most recent guidance on food allergy management to airlines published by the Civil Aviation Authority. So grab a coffee or tea, and take a few minutes to review our campaign this morning: https://lnkd.in/e-6jpmrj If you agree this issue is important, please help us share the message far and wide! Let's encourage kindness and pragmatism when it comes to allergies. After all, one small change can help save someone's life. #putthenutsaway #foodallergies #allergyawareness #travellingwithallergies

Vital work from the Safer Tourism Foundation to raise awareness amongst the travel industry and travellers about the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning. 30,000 deaths per year is a horrifying statistic from a risk that is mostly preventable. Installing (or taking) a carbon monoxide protector is such a simple, but crucial, safety measure that can help save lives, and we urge travel businesses and travellers alike to take the time to visit www.safertourism.org.uk for more information about the Pack Safe Appeal and to help support the important work they do. #travelsafety #carbonmonoxide #travelsafe #riskmanagement #gassafety
Globally, nearly 30,000 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning each year (The Lancet, 2023) And, in most cases, deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning are preventable. This week is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, and traffic to Safer Tourism Foundation's website has already seen a massive spike. This is because people, and travellers, want to know more about the dangers associated with carbon monoxide, also known as the 'silent killer'. Yet not enough attention is paid to this potentially fatal travel risk. This year, Safer Tourism Foundation supported the Foley family as they launched the Pack Safe Appeal, in memory of their son Hudson Foley who tragically lost his life due to CO poisoning while travelling in South America. The campaign aims to raise awareness around the risks posed by carbon monoxide and the lack of consistent requirements for alarms around the world. We've already seen a significant rise in the number of people buying portable CO alarms to take with them on their travels, with nearly 2000 alarms purchased using the campaign code. This week, Hudson's mother Cathy is sharing her story to help others understand the dangers of carbon monoxide and take action to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. Please read, share, pass along - and most importantly, buy a portable alarm! #COawareness #carbonmonoxide #gassafety #travelsafe #travelrisk
