  • Last week we welcomed Skills4All and Year 9 students from Saint John Henry Newman Catholic College to The Sharp Project for a special day of creative digital storytelling. The students took part in a series of interactive stories and discussions and were tasked with reimaging and modernising their favourite classical stories. Each group presented their digital story and brought their ideas to life through music choices, photography, and storyboarding. Thank you to all the students for their enthusiasm and energy, and to Rubbi Bhogal-Wood at Skills4All for supporting SharpFutures in organising the day.

  • We have just finished the first phase of our year long Creative Digital Work Placement programme for a group of students from New Bridge Academy, ten weeks of workplace experience, located at The Sharp Project. The students have been exploring creative business ideas using web development tools, graphic design, and branding after a series of workshops helping them develop their work-ready skills in these key areas. To conclude their final steps of phase one, the students worked in small groups to deliver brand concepts plus plans for products & services. Each group did a great job at creating a logo, website, and brand identity then pitching their ideas to the SharpFutures team. We were very impressed with the level of research, attention to detail, and the original creativity of their ideas. The students were supported by the New Bridge on-site staff and the SharpFutures Discover team across the first part of the placement. A huge well done to Max, Ed, Jon, Waj, Harrison, Gian, and Oliver for their efforts this year and look forward to beginning the next phase of the work placement in January!

  • Congratulations to our brilliant #SharpFuturesPOD co-ordinator Deanna Turnbull for her award-winning weekend at 53two 👏

Took part in my first ever 48Hour Film Festival with Manchester Actor's Platform (53Two) this weekend! I stepped in as a writer when the numbers were off and the cry for help went out... and we won Best Film & Best Actor! So proud of our team! Within an hour of meeting we'd broken the story and an hour later I had it written. Then 11 hours of filming, 13 hours of editing/sound/colour and we were up on the screen in front of a judging panel! Annoyed that it's taken me this long to do one but thrilled with the experience. 10/10 would recommend. Huge thanks to Simon and the 53Two Team for another brilliant event, in the best arts venue in town.

A couple weeks ago I got to do some logging for the ‘Beyond The Music: INSPIRE’ stage with SharpFutures 🗒️ The long list of panels were aimed at the next generation of creative talent, students, artists, content creators and aspiring professionals. All who want to learn about developing their careers in the music and creative industries. It was nice for me to refine my skills while going through the footage from the 2 day event, time coding and noting the key parts of it.

Now the dust has settled, it’s time to reflect on the incredible week that was BTM24! We would like to send out a heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in making this year's edition such a success; the musicians, founding members, partners, speakers, stage curators and venues that made this event so special, and the delegates and festival attendees. We hope everybody enjoyed this year in Manchester, and we'll see you in 2025! 📆

This month, Kira Donovan joined us from Content Creatives.   Content Creatives is a scheme set up by SharpFutures and Channel 4, where trainees learn about digital media and content creation, and then take a 16 week placement with a media production team or marketing agency. It’s an initiative which is very close to the hearts of our Jaywingers.   Kira will gain experience in producing digital content, and learn about the world of Marketing, SEO, PPC and Social Media. She is excited to help produce video content, write blogs, and drink lots of Yorkshire Tea with the team!

    Digital Researcher

Over the past few months I have been working as a Digital Researcher in Children’s and Education at the BBC. As part of the DPU (Digital Production Unit) I have had the opportunity to work across many exciting shoots, even travelling to Edinburgh for this year’s Panto in my first week! Getting to shoot social and YouTube content on this wide a scale with such an amazing team has been nothing short of a dream come true. As part of the team I also get to edit such a wide range of content. I’m very much looking forward to the next coming months to see what else is in store! As always, a massive thank you to SharpFutures for helping me get on board with this fantastic opportunity! I have learnt so much along the way that I’ll no doubt remember throughout my career. I have had the chance to edit some really fun content so watch this space 👀.

Head of School of Art & Design at Futureworks Manchester

I'd like to say a huge thank you to Tom Clarke and Victoria Goodwin of SharpFutures for coming in to Futureworks today to speak to the third year students in the School of Art & Design. The session was really informative and packed with great advice on CVs, cover letters and interview technique. I spoke to a few students afterwards and they found it hugely useful! And thanks to Pete Jenkinson for doing all the work in organising the session.
