In our recent session introducing different techniques that can be used to construct scenery for their automata, we set a mini challenge to make a prototype mechanism of a hungry monster that could be hand operated. They then started to draft out their final designs #shiftededucation #DesignEducation #STEAMEducation #ArtMatters #autómata
About us
shift-ED is an educational charity that offers real-world learning projects for children and young people through design and making. We believe that there needs to be a shift in education towards a more collaborative and distributed model of learning, where educators partner with artists and designers to offer children and young people immersive, real-world challenges that encourage the application of knowledge through creative thinking and problem-solving. We have a dedicated Makerspace in Camden, North London, and offer programmes for schools and young people after school that are structured around pathways within the creative industries sector. We collaborate with professionals and experts in their respective fields to inspire and raise the aspirations of the children and young people we work with.

Join the Built Environment Trust for a children's design focused workshop in January. There's a choice of 4 sessions, for Year 4, 5, 6 and 7, which will use real-world examples to introduces children to the fascinating world of housing design while encouraging them to engage with broader societal and environmental questions. It aims to inspire young learners to think critically about how homes shape our lives and communities. Each session lasts for 1 hour and aims to develop skills such as: Comparing and contrasting contexts and daily life in different countries. Creative problem-solving that considers real needs, wants, and values. Generating, developing, modelling, designing, and explaining ideas through discussion, drawings, and models. https://lnkd.in/e6ujUF65

As part of the design planning phase for our Camtastic Toys project, we conducted a hands-on activity teaching children how to draw the human figure and create a 3D armature using wire and card. This engaging session equipped them with the foundational skills needed to design moving characters for their automata. #shiftededucation #DesignEducation #STEAMEducation #ArtMatters #autómata

Year 5 students had a great time learning to use a pillar drill and hammer to assemble their automata. It was wonderful to see their focus and excitement as they explored new tools! #designeducation #primary #steam #stem

Great to see our volunteer Onur getting so involved during our project with Netley... spurred on by some cheeky Year 5s who have mastered the art of delegation! #STEAM #STEM #DesignEducation #Camden

Our Camtastic Toys project is hugely popular with our young designers and makers from local primary schools in Camden! Many of the children love the process of creating an analogue product, exploring cams and levers, and designing an animated scene. These #automata were created by Year 5 pupils at Primrose Hill Primary School last term. We’ve just started the project with another Year 5 class from Primrose Hill and Netley School and Centre for Autism #primary #steam #stem #DesignEducation #automata

We’re excited to share these fantastic automata created by Year 5 pupils at Primrose Hill Primary School in Camden as part of our schools programme, focusing on toy design and introducing cams and pulleys. Videos of them in motion coming soon! #STEAM #automata #designeducation #Camden

We’ve been running our Camtastic Toys project (https://shorturl.at/EC7m2) with Year 5 pupils from Primrose Hill Primary School this term, exploring basic mechanics and the use of cams and levers to create automata. After determining the types of movement possible, they are now designing action scenes to illustrate using 2D or 3D media. #automata #toys #designeducation #primary

A big thanks to Mind in Camden for donating ‘unsellable shirts’ that would normally go to a recycling plant, but which we repurpose as aprons for messy work with children and young people in our project workshops. We considered buying flashy new orange shirts with our logo, but chose a more sustainable option by partnering with local charities committed to reducing waste. Our goal is to have children practise their craft knife skills by cutting out their names as stencils, then painting over them to create personalised shirts for our projects. Watch this space! #mindcharity #camden #recycleclothing Mind
