This year marks 25 years since the declaration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Violence against women and girls (VAWG) remains a devastating global issue. Each year, 2 million women in the UK are victims of violence perpetrated by men, and recorded cases of VAWG have surged by 37% in just five years, now reaching 3,000 offences every day. But the real figures are likely much higher. Many cases go unreported due to impunity, silence, stigma, and shame. VAWG takes many forms, including: - Intimate partner violence (psychological abuse, physical violence, marital rape, femicide) - Sexual violence and harassment (rape, child sexual abuse, stalking, cyber-harassment) - Human trafficking (slavery, sexual exploitation) - Harmful practices like female genital mutilation and child marriage Every statistic represents a person, a story, and a call to action. Let's continue to raise awareness and fight for a world free from violence against women and girls. #EndVAWG #VAWGAwareness #StopViolenceAgainstWomen #IDVAW2024 #SpeakOut #GenderEquality

📢CCLA's Modern Slavery UK Benchmark 2024: Key takeaways for businesses CCLA Investment Management has released its latest report assessing how the UK’s largest listed companies are tackling modern slavery in their operations and supply chains: https://lnkd.in/eT6B-D29 Here’s our initial take: ✅ Increased disclosure: More companies than ever are disclosing finding modern slavery or its indicators in their supply chains. This is a timely reminder that forced labour remains prevalent – both in the UK and globally. It’s also a potential indicator that businesses are starting to implement more effective due diligence processes. ✅ Mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence is driving improvements The upcoming EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD), coupled with investor benchmarking, has driven significant improvements in companies' approaches over the past year. CCLA calls on the UK government to introduce similar legislation, so we do not fall further out of step with other advanced economies and trading partners. CCLA mentioned Anti-Slavery International patron Baroness Lola Young’s Private Members Bill to protect people and planet: https://lnkd.in/emWf2pRN ✅ Room for improvement in remediation: Remediation remains a critical weak spot. Only 20 of 110 companies reported on outcomes of remedy processes they put in place for victims of modern slavery within their operations and supply chains, and just 2 provided evidence that those remedies were satisfactory to the victims or groups representing the victims. This underscores the urgent need for more effective, worker-centred approaches. Access to remedy is a foundational concept, a key pillar of the #UNGuidingPrinciples, and a requirement of the CSDDD. To learn more, check out our recent Legal Analysis on the CSDDD: https://lnkd.in/exqinrFz 💡Our insights on remediation: At Anti-Slavery International, we specialise in guiding companies to conduct meaningful human rights due diligence and effective, timely remedy to impacted workers. 📩 Partner with us: Contact our Responsible Business Advisory Services team to learn how we are helping policymakers and businesses implement robust human rights due diligence. 🔗https://lnkd.in/eXFbruNE

Tomorrow, on November 16th, we celebrate International Day for Tolerance. Tolerance is neither indulgence nor indifference. It is respect and appreciation of the rich variety of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. Our recent research on ‘Culturally Competency in UK Responses to Modern Slavery’ found how diverse cultural backgrounds can impact vulnerability and exploitation and crucially how cultural competency may improve the effectiveness of support provision and responses to exploitation risk. Culture is individual, dynamic and ever-changing. By educating staff with cultural awareness principles and why it is important for staff to being open to our differences and having a nonjudgmental approach will ensure services and organisations are inclusive and effective. At Shiva Foundation, we empower organizations to build ethical, sustainable, and resilient operations. #internationaldayfortolerance

Today, on October 18th, we mark Anti-Slavery Day. This serves as a crucial reminder that these crimes not only persist around the world, but every part of society has a role to play in helping to end it. 50 million people are estimated to be trapped in modern slavery around the world (ILO) It is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world. Estimates show that more than half of all forced labour and forced marriages are in high-income or middle income countries. 86% of forced labour cases are found in industries including manufacturing, constructions, hospitality, agriculture, care and domestic work. At Shiva Foundation, we are committed to help businesses eradicate modern slavery. New research reveals barriers for the survivors of modern slavery to access support created by a lack of cultural and structural competency in the UK’s response to modern slavery. The research identified the barriers at three levels: 1. Individual barriers. Survivors of modern slavery face significant barriers such as discrimination, mistrust of authorities, lack of legal knowledge, language barriers and feelings of shame. Cultural competence is crucial in mitigating these challenges and providing effective support. 2. Organisational and systemic bias. Professional biases, stereotypes, and inflexible systems hinder the early identification and support of potential victims. Promoting culturally competent practices and challenging these biases within organisations can prevent further harm and ensure better service delivery. 3. Policies and legal framework. Current immigration policies and complex support systems negatively impact survivors. Reforming legislation and making systems more survivor-focused are necessary steps to address structural vulnerabilities and discrimination, ensuring equitable access to support and protection. The research was conducted by the University of Hull in partnership with Shiva Foundation and West Midlands Anti Slavery Network. It was funded by the Modern Slavery and Human Rights PEC, which in turn is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. https://lnkd.in/ewjvYb32

Today, on July 30th, we mark World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. This year’s theme implores us all to Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking. Globally, children are subjected to trafficking in all its forms, including forced labor, forced criminality, and sexual exploitation. The hospitality sector is particularly high risk. Not only can rooms be used for activities such as sexual exploitation, drug trafficking, and county lines operations, but systemic issues within the industry can also contribute to adverse outcomes for workers. It’s substantial need for labour and the global demand for cheap labour fuels this illicit trade. At Shiva Foundation, we have developed the Stop Slavery Blueprint a comprehensive toolkit offering actionable guidance and customisable templates to fortify hotels and other hospitality businesses against the threat of modern slavery in both their operations and supply chains.
