We are pleased to see one of our research projects presented at COP29 – thanks to CNMI at the University of Cambridge and Waugh Thistleton Architects for including us on the journey. The concept is an all timber primary school, flat-pack design and zero concrete (even in the ground).
🌍 Accelerating the Buildings Breakthrough: Solutions for Addressing Whole Life Carbon, Circularity, and Shifting to Bio-based Materials This moderated discussion will highlight cutting-edge frameworks, tools, and real-world solutions aimed at advancing near-zero emission and circular buildings. Focusing on vital tools such as the National Circularity Assessment Framework for Buildings, Circular Transition Indicators (CTI), Bio-Based Materials Compendium, 10 Whole Life Cycle Recommendations for the Buildings Breakthrough, and Minoro, the session will explore how these resources can be practically applied to drive sustainable building practices. ✨ The Challenge: The building sector faces significant challenges in implementing circularity principles and reducing embodied carbon across the full lifecycle of buildings—from construction to demolition. These principles, though critical for reducing waste and emissions, remain under-utilized in practice. Furthermore, sustainable materials management and the adoption of bio-based materials have not yet reached their full potential due to knowledge gaps and market barriers. ✨ The Solutions: This session will offer a deep dive into the frameworks and tools designed to address these challenges. It will provide practical approaches to achieving near-zero emissions through circular and whole life cycle methodologies and showcase how these strategies can be integrated into design, construction, and procurement processes. Participants will explore tools like the National Circularity Assessment Framework, Circular Transition Indicators, and the Bio-Based Materials Compendium, all of which aim to guide and support sustainable building practices at scale. 🎙️ Speakers Include: Nasra Nanda, Harry Mills, Emma Lappalainen, Usha Iyer-Raniga, Nazakat Azimli, Paul King, Roland Hunziker, Chiaki Okimura, George.K. Tarus, Sam Stratton-Short, Peter Vangsbo. 📅 Discover the full agenda and follow us live with the streaming link here: https://lnkd.in/d_7dSkxE 👉 For directions, event schedules, and more, visit the Pavilion page: https://lnkd.in/ew6ZwyGS We look forward to seeing you at the Buildings and Cooling Pavilion! #ActOnCooling #BuildForClimate #COP29

The University Of Peterborough? Completed it! Smith and Wallwork have worked on all 3 of the Anglia Ruskin University Peterborough buildings, delivering 3 very different buildings along the way: Phase 1 - Uses an in-situ RC frame to support long-span post-tensioned floor slabs. Phase 2 - Is a steel/CLT hybrid with CLT cores and floor/roof planks. Phase 3 - Now completed is entirely mass timber using a mix of CLT and glulam members that form some of the architectural finishes. Fantastic work from all those involved in Phase 3: Morgan Sindall Construction, MCW architects, CPW, LUC, KLH UK Limited, TClarke, plus many more who made this project a huge success.

It’s Complete!! 🏨 Very proud to share the completion photos of our Anglia Ruskin University Living Lab project in Peterborough. Adding to the existing Campus seamlessly, providing over 2,500m² of essential teaching space which includes a CAT 2 Tissue Cultures Lab and the Living (exhibition) Lab for wider public, industry and University collaboration. Phase 3 of the campus is a striking building of high-quality finishes designed by MCW architects, Smith and Wallwork, CPW, LUC Landscape Architects. Morgan Sindall Construction have delivered the project with our key supply chain partners Van Elle, MJS Construction (March) Ltd, Apex Demolition, KLH UK Limited, TClarke, MB GLASS & GLAZING LTD, Vertec Ltd - Roofing and Cladding, VOLAND ROOFING LIMITED, ALN Carpentry Joinery Ltd Roskell Contracts, ATIC Group Ltd, GBS Builders (Ipswich) Ltd, WESTCOTES FLOORING COMPANY LIMITED, ADVANCED SCREEDING LTD, Radii Planet Group, David Smith St Ives Limited, Land Structure Ltd. The project stands as an example of what good looks like for pre-construction and construction stage delivery. This wouldn't have been possible without the client team inputs of Jacqueline Moffat Jon Lawes MCIOB Ross Renton & Matt Burton, We've learned so much through this project and it shines a light towards the work required to achieve recently published industry sustainability targets, especially the need to collaborate from the earliest stage with client, design team and main contractor. Our Morgan Sindall Construction team, led by Matt Cade, have poured their hearts and souls into achieving the ambitions of Anglia Ruskin University, Peterborough City Council and Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority. Kudos to the whole project team Alan Watt Alex Pett MCIOB, Colin Hobart, Myles Higby Jack Payne, Michael Greatorex, Christopher Wood MRICS Dawn Spooner Daniel Mercer & James Knox MCIOB. 👏 👏 👏

The Lab at ARU Peterborough, the third building MCW architects designed at the new university campus, has been successfully handed over by Morgan Sindall Construction. The highly sustainable, mass timber building includes a microbiology lab, tissue culture lab, engineering workshops, teaching spaces and a "Living Lab", which will host exhibits and events to inspire students and the wider community. It has been a privilege to continue our journey with Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, Peterborough City Council and Mace, and it has been a real pleasure to work with Morgan Sindall to deliver this striking new energy efficient building. We can't wait to see the building filled with students, transforming this special place in the city into a buzzing university campus! Thanks to the whole team for a fun ride, but special shout-out to Jacqueline Moffat, Matthew Burton and Matt Cade. Smith and Wallwork, COUCH PERRY & WILKES ENVIRONMENTAL LLP, LUC

Smith and Wallwork has published its 4th annual carbon report, providing data on the structural materials installed on its construction sites in 2023. It has taken us a while to crunch the numbers and it is encouraging to see less materials going to site and carbon numbers coming down. However, it does not mean we have suddenly become world-leading experts on lean design – one reason for the reduction is that we have fewer projects on site and more on the drawing board. Encouragingly, the other reason for the reduction is that more projects have been re-use projects which are more material and carbon efficient. #carbon #carbonreporting #engineersdeclare
