Urgent support is needed for Kantamanto Market The world’s largest second-hand clothing market has been destroyed in a devastating fire. Over 10,000 people have been impacted with their businesses and belongings left in ruin. Hundreds have been injured and one person has lost their life to the fire. Kanatmano Market in Accra, Ghana was responsible for circulating a staggering 25 million pieces of secondhand clothing every month. The vibrant community has been tackling the Global North’s textile waste through resale, reuse, repair, and remanufacturing for over 30 years. The loss of Kantamanto highlights more than ever the injustice of the fashion system and the importance of supporting the people and businesses which sit at the end of the linear economy. The Or Foundation is leading the relief effort to help those impacted and to start rebuilding Kanatmanto. We urge individuals, SOJO brand partners and all clothing brands to offer any help they can, to help give the support that is urgently needed by thousands of people in Accra at this devastating time.
