Urgent support is needed for Kantamanto Market The world’s largest second-hand clothing market has been destroyed in a devastating fire. Over 10,000 people have been impacted with their businesses and belongings left in ruin. Hundreds have been injured and one person has lost their life to the fire. Kanatmano Market in Accra, Ghana was responsible for circulating a staggering 25 million pieces of secondhand clothing every month. The vibrant community has been tackling the Global North’s textile waste through resale, reuse, repair, and remanufacturing for over 30 years. The loss of Kantamanto highlights more than ever the injustice of the fashion system and the importance of supporting the people and businesses which sit at the end of the linear economy. The Or Foundation is leading the relief effort to help those impacted and to start rebuilding Kanatmanto. We urge individuals, SOJO brand partners and all clothing brands to offer any help they can, to help give the support that is urgently needed by thousands of people in Accra at this devastating time. You can donate below: Momo: +233(0)559852625 Donorbox: kantamanto.theor.org All photos from The Or Foundation

Kantamanto community members have lost bales, supplies, phones, records, sewing machines and so much more. In tandem with the rebuild and rehabilitation efforts, we are committed to dispersing direct relief to community members so they can get back on their feet. With an estimated 10,000 people being impacted, this will be a massive undertaking. We have committed an initial $1Million USD and are actively fundraising to ensure we can provide this direct relief holistically in a meaningful amount. You can donate to supplement our efforts  Momo: +233(0)559852625 Donorbox: kantamanto.theor.org Please note that all donations received at this time will be directed to this relief effort and will not overlap with our programmatic funding. 100% of funds contributed will go directly to the Kantamanto Community in support of the relief efforts. If you know anyone who was injured or who has been in the hospital, please DM us so we can offer support.

🎉 Exciting news for a Friday - we're delighted to announce the 10 fashion and textiles businesses that have received funding from our ReWear grant programme! Each of the selected businesses is a London-based circular start-up or early-stage business that is pioneering a repair, resale and/or rental solution for textiles that helps reduce the need for making new clothes. We're supporting them to help grow and expand their operations and amplify their impact, while playing a key role in promoting circularity within London’s fashion ecosystem. The 10 businesses are: 1. The Seam 2. Vamp Sneaker Cleaning 3. SOJO 4. Verte 5. Give Your Best 6. Tern Eco 7. Known Source 8. Continue 9. KIRAA 10. Bundlee The ReWear cohort had the opportunity to meet each other in person at a kick-off event this week, hosted at our offices. It was great to meet everyone in person, and there were a lot of exciting conversations happening. We’re looking forward to seeing the impact all their activities have in London over the next few months! These grants are made possible thanks to funding from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and supported by the Mayor of London. We're honoured to be a part of such crucial research in understanding the quantifiable impact of circular business models. Thank you WRAP and @IMPACT+ for conducting such an important study and for choosing SOJO to work with you on this.

Did buying a pair of shorts second-hand stop you buying a brand-new pair? Did you rent a dress instead of buying one new? Did you repair a well-loved item instead of replacing it? As the popularity of pre-loved, rental and repair markets continues to grow the perception around the benefits of these circular business models (CBMs) has sparked debate. ♻️ Quantifying these benefits is difficult. An article published by the The New York Times highlighted concern that renting clothing isn’t better for the environment than buying new due to the impact created during washing and shipping. 👗 💦 🚛 Introducing the second project in our Impact Innovation Fund: ♻️ Detangling Displacement Rates: ensuring consistency and robustness in avoided emission calculations for circular business models (CBM's). The level to which a purchase/rental/repair prevents a purchase of a new item is known as the ‘displacement rate’. For example, if half of pre-loved purchases prevented a brand-new purchase, there would be a displacement rate of 50%. WRAP has developed an independent methodology that can be used by a range of CBMs to calculate their displacement rate. 📈 This project aims to collect case studies from project partners SOJO, eBay, and ACS (Advanced Clothing Solutions) , with Vinted also recruited, to show how it can be applied and used as the sector-leading methodology. ➡️ Led by Sarah Key, the project will demonstrate how widespread adoption of the methodology would allow more accurate avoided emissions calculations and comparison across organisations. This will create greater consistency and transparency for those within the sector and for citizens. To find out more about this project and all our funded projects visit: https://lnkd.in/ebZBUGui
