Twenty years ago, an idea became a reality – CPI was born ✨ We started with two people, one desk in the North East of England, and a clear vision for a better future. Nigel Perry MBE FREng, our former CEO and current board member, was one of those two people there on day one. He sat down with our current CEO, Frank Millar, at The Catalyst to revisit those early days, tell us the story of how CPI came to be, and reminisce over an incredible 20 years. 🌍 How can we tackle the climate crisis while ensuring a healthier, more sustainable future for everyone? Alternative proteins could be a key ingredient. As highlighted by The Earthshot Prize Prize, innovation is critical to solving our planet’s greatest challenges. Reducing the environmental impact of our food system is one of them. Shifting to alternative proteins – like plant-based, fermentation-derived, and cultivated meat – offers a solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve resources, and protect biodiversity. We're proud to have been selected as an official nominator, recognising CPI's ability to identify impactful solution to some of the planet's most pressing challenges. But our work goes beyond nominations. At CPI, we’re driving this transformation by enabling businesses to scale their innovations to bring alternative protein solutions to market faster. Here’s how we can help: 🔬 Cutting-edge facilities for fermentation, downstream processing, and product prototyping. 🤝 Expertise in scaling up processes while reducing costs and risks. 📊 Insights into market trends, consumer preferences, and regulatory frameworks. 🌟 Collaborative partnerships to unlock funding and accelerate innovation. Alternative proteins are more than a food trend – they’re a powerful tool in creating a sustainable, resilient food system. 🦠This week is World anti-microbial resistance awareness week, supported by the World Health Organization. CPI we’re sharing our expertise in anti-microbial resistance, to raise the profile of this important issue and support professionals working in R&D in this area. The drive to develop alternative therapeutics to ease the burden on antibiotic use couldn't be any more pressing. The solution to such a global challenge can only be addressed through innovation across a breadth of diagnostic tools, therapeutics and precedence for how to navigate manufacturing and regulatory hurdles. There is enormous potential for innovative technologies such as phage and live bacterial products but also so much we can learn from more traditional modalities such as recombinant proteins and monoclonal antibodies. CPI is well placed in the process development and scale-up of such biologic candidates who can support industry to translate novel AMR molecules towards clinical supply. Did you know we can harness spider venom to make sustainable pesticides? 🕷️ ⬇️ Inspiration from the natural world can help replace the harmful chemicals used in farm production with more environmentally friendly options. That way we can protect our crops and boost biodiversity at the same time. CPI worked with Newcastle University’s EcoStack project to develop new biopesticides using spider venom proteins by: ⚗️ Creating a tailored “plug and play” fermentation system. 📈 Scaling up their production process from 5L to > 3500L. 🎯 Pioneering a process for recovering and concentrating the end product. 🐍 Developing a pilot-scale platform for the production and testing of other similar venom-based solutions. If you're an AgriTech company looking to accelerate your innovative product to the market, CPI is here to support your journey from concept to commercialisation. On 16 November 2024, COP29 hosted its first-ever Digitalisation Day - alongside Science, Technology and Innovation. Here’s why these themes go hand-in-hand ⬇️ Digitalisation Day concluded with the COP29 Declaration on Green Digital Action. This powerful proposal by the International Telecommunication Union urges international collaborative action to maximise the impact of digital technologies as critical tools to address the climate crisis. As a member of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), we’re committed to fostering sustainable innovation for a healthier future for people and the planet. During our 20 years of deep tech innovation, digital technologies have become essential across all science, technology and innovation. We use digital tools like machine learning, AI, automated robotic systems, and data-driven processes to make vital industries more sustainable: 💊 Pharmaceuticals – our digital membership and access to our digitally enabled, automated “just-in-time” medicines manufacturing facility reduces waste and costs, while increasing speed and efficiency of manufacturing, which benefits patients 🔋 Batteries – we use state-of-the-art, digitally enhanced equipment for active materials synthesis and processing to optimise manufacturing, boost productivity and improve quality control for next-generation batteries. With enhanced performance and longevity, these clean energy sources will power electric vehicles and our electricity grid. 🥩 AgriFoodTech - digitally-automated, high-throughput screening increases efficiencies in the development of alternative proteins and cultivated meat. 🏥 HealthTech - smarter, lighter and more flexible wearable HealthTech, smart packaging for drugs, digital twins and virtual wards – linked by 5G networks tested and enabled on our 5G testbed – are transforming healthcare into a more connected system with a lower carbon footprint. 🦠This week is World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week, supported by the World Health Organization – and at CPI we're joining the force to tackle this major global issue. 💡What is AMR, and why does it matter? Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve to resist the medicines that used to treat them. This means common infections become harder to tackle, leading to prolonged illness, higher death rates, and more challenging healthcare outcomes. ⚠️ Did you know that AMR is linked to nearly 5 million deaths each year? And the main driver is the overuse and misuse of antimicrobial drugs. 💉 The Solution? According to the WHO, smarter vaccine use could prevent the need for up to 2.5 billion antibiotic doses every year! Join us this week as we share insights and solutions to help researchers and healthcare leaders combat this growing global threat.
