Building upon our ongoing collaboration with TOTO Europe UK, we are excited to reveal ‘The Beauty of Shadows’ – an installation designed by Squire & Partners for the Japanese bathroom brand’s inaugural stand at this year’s HIX Event LDN. Taking inspiration from Junichirō Tanizaki’s essay ‘In Praise of Shadows’, published in 1933, the installation incorporates a tearoom and zen garden to display TOTO’s products. The stand’s design showcases the power of collaboration, with contributions from 400-year-old Japanese construction company Takenaka, Japanese artisan crafts social enterprise Cipango, The Stonemasonry Company Limited and bespoke soundscape by Tom Middleton, played via Bang & Olufsen’s Beosound Balance speaker. TOTO interviewed Senior Partner Tim Gledstone and Head of Modelshop Beth Mills about the commission and the inspiration behind the installation’s design. From being “a lightning rod for opponents” to leaving a legacy that “outlives his critics and rivals”, the second life of Richard Seifert’s architecture is examined by Jonathan Morrison in a recent article for The Spectator. Focusing on the recently completed sensitive refurbishment of Space House London for Seaforth land, Morrison interviewed Senior Partner Tim Gledstone about the wave of brutalist buildings being given a second lease of life. In the piece, Tim details how working with the expressive and strong existing structure enabled the creation of a premium workspace building that “should be good for another 80 to 100 years”, which Morrison describes as “a template for other buildings from the period that haven’t yet been destroyed.” Read the full article via our website: https://lnkd.in/eZq4JNeW

“We can deliver that vision.” Senior partner Tim Gledstone joined Monocle Radio’s latest episode of The Urbanist, which focused on Protecting London’s Past. Tim was joined by client Tyler Goodwin of Seaforth Land to share how they took on an ‘ambitious restoration process’ to give Space House London – a ‘piece of London history a brighter outlook’. Speaking with producer Carlota Rebelo, Tim and Tyler discussed the priorities and challenges of bringing this icon of brutalist architecture into the future. They cover transforming the listed 60s structure into a BREEAM Outstanding building, how Seifert and Partners’ bold original concepts were respected and realised, and how Space House can be a blueprint for future projects. ‘What makes successful architecture?’ This was a university interview question I got asked when applying for my architecture degree. My answer was simple: ‘One that benefits everyone, not just its users.’ My teenage self’s honest response echos in my memory as (many years on) I gaze upon Space House, the project I’ve worked on for over half a decade, which happens to do just that… It serves people far beyond its intended users. I teared up when the site hoarding came down and I got to witness the public realm being instantly activated by members of the public. People were using the benches, enjoying the sun, gazing into the reception’s carefully orchestrated interiors… Space House is not only one of the most sustainable grade II listed retrofit offices in London, it’s also the physical testament proclaiming that successful schemes can indeed be a catalyst for positive social value. I am tremendously proud to have been a part of this incredible project. From studying archive drawings, through to concept, detailed, technical design and site inspections upon site inspections... A huge thank you to (both previous and current members of) Seaforth, Squire and Partners, the Consultant Team and BAM UK & Ireland. Very honoured to be a part of this Team.
