A huge thank you to Martin Milner, James Walker and all our members who attended this year’s STA Technical Conference! It was truly fantastic to have the best minds in the structural timber industry together, collaborating, learning, and shaping the future of sustainable construction. Over the course of the event, we covered significant ground on regulatory updates, industry challenges, and the STA's roadmap for the year ahead. Your insights and engagement are invaluable, and we’re looking forward to hearing your feedback on the progress we’ve made. What do our members say? “The latest Technical Conference was again a great success. This allows the STA to pass on updates on the Technical Projects currently being undertaken. The feedback from the assembled Members was of the usual high standard which will help form next year's direction. The quality of the work throughout the year and the presentations on the day was excellent and well received by all attending.” - Gordon Megahy, Director, Clancy Consulting. “The STA Technical Conference is a great event where all the technically minded members come together, learn about regulatory updates, and shape the STA's direction for the year ahead. This valuable tool ensures the STA knows what members need in their day-to-day business on a technical level. This event offers the opportunity to connect with others and strengthen relationships within the STA community. I enjoyed the conference, as I could meet the industry's movers and shakers.” - Eur Ing Frank Werling, Dipl Ing, Head of Technical, Engineering & Design Once again, thank you to everyone who participated, contributed, and networked to make this event so impactful. #StructuralTimber #SustainableConstruction #STACommunity #IndustryInnovation #TimberEngineering

This article highlights the pivotal role the Midlands can play in driving the built environment toward net zero emissions—a challenge that demands collaboration, innovation, and commitment across the industry. Structural timber is a cornerstone of this transformation, offering a low-carbon, sustainable alternative that addresses emissions throughout the construction lifecycle. Andrew Carpenter, Chief Executive of the Structural Timber Association, stated: “We have a big opportunity to make structural timber the material of choice, not only because it is renewable and sustainable but because it is uniquely placed to help reduce embodied carbon in buildings.” This aligns perfectly with the Midlands’ goals for greener construction and exemplifies how timber systems can be integral to achieving net zero. Innovative offsite manufacturing methods combined with policy and regulatory support are critical to accelerating this shift. The Structural Timber Association (STA) is proud to advocate for and support the adoption of structural timber, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, compliant, and sustainable systems. #NetZero #SustainableConstruction #StructuralTimber #MidlandsLeadership https://lnkd.in/ePSBxdgZ

It was an honour to be part of this important industry luncheon where we met with Minister Mary Creagh CBE MP and fellow partners at the Confederation of Timber Industries - CTI , Confor: Confederation of Forest Industries (UK) and Timber Development UK. Together we were able to highlight the collective power of the timber industry, emphasising its pivotal role in addressing the UK’s housing needs, climate goals, and economic development. From our discussions, it’s clear that structural timber is not just a sustainable solution—it’s a proven and viable answer to pressing housing challenges. Talking with Edward J. at Homes England and David Robins at Places for People, who was also in attendance, further underscored the critical alignment between industry and government. Together, we are committed to achieving the 1.5 million home target while promoting low-carbon, energy-efficient building solutions. #structuraltimber #collaboration #timber #UKtimberindustry
Industry Collaboration in Action. It was a pleasure for us to host Minister Mary Creagh CBE MP at an industry luncheon. The CTI consists of three industry leaders, Confor: Confederation of Forest Industries (UK), Structural Timber Association Ltd, and Timber Development UK, all working together to promote the use of timber in construction and support the government in taking on the housing and climate crises. #Timber is a £10bn supply chain in the UK which provides economic prosperity in every region of the UK, green employment, thousands of healthy, safe, warm, and beautiful low-carbon homes, and supports a sustainable construction industry. The timber industry is at the forefront of driving low-energy manufacturing – creating high-performance, low-carbon goods that help achieve UK carbon reduction targets. Right now there is existing capacity to double #timberframe manufacturing output to reach 100,000 homes per year, with timber providing a cost-free solution to carbon capture. The use of timber in construction also promotes forest growth in the UK and worldwide, as products are sourced from sustainably managed forests. Using more wood in the built environment, in structures, furniture and interiors is a natural, cost-effective, sustainable carbon capture solution – which we can do now, as it is based on proven business models and established science. As a climate and construction solution, the use of timber is proven, viable, and widely supported by built environment specialists and the general public. Using wood in construction was supported by 82% of people in the Climate Assembly UK, while growing forests and improving forest management (99%) the most widely supported initiative. Forests planted in the UK for wood, including those which produce timber commercially, have significant value; as long-term carbon storage, as a key provider of green jobs in rural areas, and for supporting greater biodiversity. This event provided an invaluable opportunity for the timber industry to engage in meaningful discussions about how industry and Government can collaborate through the Timber in Construction Roadmap, how structural timber can support low-carbon, energy efficient, and rapid construction of UK housing, and the essential role of tree planting in providing long-term timber security in the UK. The CTI discussed with the Minister the importance of home-grown timber and wood products in the timber supply chain, and the need to plant more productive forests to secure the future softwood supplies that are vital for the construction sector. We were joined by Edward J., Homes England representative and David Robins from Places for People, where conversations focused on the government’s commitment to building 1.5m homes and how the structural timber industry can help achieve this goal.

At a recent event titled Managing Moisture in Mass Timber Construction, hosted by PEFC UK Limited, industry experts shared valuable insights into addressing moisture-related challenges. Nic Clark participated in the panel discussion, while representing the STA, Paul Newman outlined strategies focusing on design, durability, and proactive solutions. Phil O’Leary explored the movement of water in wood, looking at moisture sources, while Martin Milner examined structural remediation of moisture defects, defect sources and addressing limitations. Dr Mila Duncheva highlighted the biodiversity and biophilic benefits of CLT, and Charlie Law MIEMA, ICIOB, CEnv explained timber’s carbon accounting through its lifecycle. Kate Fairhead provided strategies for insuring mass timber projects and stressed early collaboration with insurers. The panel, featuring leaders like Greg Cooper, Alex Brock, Steve Cook, Nic Clark and Kate Fairhead, emphasised the need for shared learning, clear guidelines, and collaboration to mitigate risks and advance sustainable timber construction. Thank you to John Kirkby, Laura Llewelyn and the team at PEFC UK Limited for hosting a very informative day. #MassTimber #Sustainability #StructuralTimber #ConstructionInnovation
