''Misquoting Voltaire: If COP didn't exist we'd have to invent it. If we hadn't had the Paris Agreement, we would have been on a much worse trajectory. COP has a kind of forcing moment in coming together.'' As #COP29 kicks off today, our CEO Helen Clarkson and Rui Teixeira from EDP sat down to discuss whether any progress has been made since the COP28 agreement to 'transition away from fossil fuels' and what needs to happen at COP29. This week, while #COP29 negotiations in Baku dominated headlines, world leaders gathered in Rio for the G20 summit. Despite discussions on global challenges, one key issue was notably absent from the agenda – climate change. #G20 countries are responsible for 76% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making their role in the transition to net-zero crucial. A small delegation from Climate Group, led by Jebi Rahman, joined the summit to amplify the voices of states and regions. As Laurence Tubiana of the European Climate Foundation said, “The future of climate action needs to progress at the local level.” Climate Group works with twenty Brazilian states as part of the #Under2Coalition, the world’s largest network of subnational governments committed to net-zero by 2050. Key highlights: ⭕Contributing to G20 process: We published a policy brief with Regions4 on including subnational governments in the G20’s climate actions. ⭕Investing in subnational action: Launch of the “Mobilizing Green Investment in Brazilian States” project and a Community of Practice for Brazilian states. ⭕Multilevel engagement: Participation in U20 Plenary sessions, focusing on the importance of cities, states, and regions in achieving climate targets. Steel decarbonisation in China: Join us tomorrow for an online discussion on building a sustainable, low emission steel supply chain. Steel is critical to global development, but it’s also responsible for 8% of global GHG emissions annually. As the demand for decarbonisation grows, so does the urgency to futureproof the steel industry by transforming it into a cleaner one. As the world’s largest producer, China plays a decisive role in shaping the future of the industry. With its “dual carbon” targets, reducing emissions in China’s steel sector is not only a national priority but also vital for global progress. Hear about practical strategies and best practices from local industry leaders (e.g. Dr. Liu Yinghao from China Baowu Steel Group, Liu Bin from CIMC TREA, Lucy Lu from RMI and Cearo WANG from SKF Group) and beyond (Jen Carson from Climate Group) and learn how demand-side collaboration can drive a low-carbon future. 📅 Date: Thursday Nov 21st, 2024 ⏰ Time: 15:30–17:30 (CST) | 8:30–10:30 (CET) 📍 Where: Zoom (with simultaneous interpretation) Joining details below (please manually add the event into your calendars): You are invited to a Zoom webinar. NEW: It’s time to double the energy renovation rate in Europe, we need a #RenovationRevolution to drive up #energyefficiency and meet Europe’s climate goals. Launching on #UrbanizationDay of #COP29, read our new guidance to explore how governments, businesses, and financial institutions can work better together to deliver a renovation revolution in Europe. In partnership with Carrier, CBRE UK, Danfoss, ROCKWOOL Group, Siemens, Signify and VELUX we're pleased to publish our new handbook 'How to deliver a renovation revolution in Europe's buildings'. The handbook shares how we can overcome barriers like funding issues, skills shortages, outdated data, and lengthy permitting processes. Plus, with the support of scalable and replicable case studies, it details why we must aggregate projects, coordinate planning, improve datasets, embed energy efficiency into ESG standards, and link renovation projects with the #EV roll out. ⭕ Read the new #RenovationRevolution handbook here: https://lnkd.in/esNNhMd5

Here's what's been happening this week at Climate Group: ⭕ It's Time to get serious on methane. There's a lot of conversation around methane at #COP29. At Climate Group, we're calling for governments to facilitate a more powerful global agency by next year’s COP, that has the authority to audit fossil fuel companies’ declarations and delivery. As Secretariat of the #Under2Coalition, Climate Group is also working hand in hand with the Subnational Methane Action Coalition, bringing together leading state and regional governments from around the world to share methane reduction policies across the agriculture, energy and waste sectors. Watch Professor Celeste Saulo, World Meteorological Organization, and our CEO Helen Clarkson echo the importance of increasing the standards of measuring methane emissions to curb global warming. #OneYear7Actions ⭕“It’s outrageous that in 2024, which is already the hottest year on record, the biggest economies in the world can’t state the truth: that we need to phase out fossil fuels now” says Champa Patel in response to the G20 Brasil 2024 statement. More in Climate Home News: https://lnkd.in/ec3PCRDd ⭕Don’t waver on the ZEV Mandate, leading British companies urge the UK Government in The Guardian, saying the legislation that requires car makers to sell a greater number of electric vehicles (EVs) each year is essential to decarbonising Britain. Our Head of Transport, Dominic Phinn, tells the paper: “There is absolutely no justification for tinkering with the ground-breaking tool that has put the UK in the fast lane of the global EV transition. Contrary to recent stories, demand for EVs is strong, and growing. Members of our EV100 network alone are committed to running over 5.75 million vehicles electric by 2030.” https://lnkd.in/e6yurkZV ⭕ Listen to Ollie Wilson, Head of RE100, on IESR’s podcast, discussing RE100's work to unlock corporate renewables procurement in Indonesia. It's a "very critical period in Indonesia's energy policy", says Ollie, and we're calling for greater ambition on renewables electricity from policymakers: https://lnkd.in/edSq7mMY To keep up to date with the latest climate news and insights, subscribe to our quarterly newsletter: https://ow.ly/AcZa50TWjYN

Live from #COP29: ''I do think this is a different world than the one we were in 2017 when President Trump then pulled out of the Paris Agreement but it's true that progress is likely to slow down in the US. That means one of the biggest emitters is not going to be on track and is already not on track'' This week, Ed Crooks from Wood Mackenzie sat down with Wade Crowfoot from the California Natural Resources Agency , Travis Kellerman from the Office of Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, our CEO Helen Clarkson and Jessika Trancik from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to discuss how US states will lead climate action if Trump pulls back, including: ⭕ US state-led climate action while federal support retreats ⭕ Emissions standards in California and New Mexico ⭕ AI clean energy needs Listen to the full episode from Wood Mackenzie's Energy Gang Podcast: https://lnkd.in/exmiqkxU #COP29Azerbaijan #WMCOP29 #energytransition #climate

“The voice of subnational governments is critical at this COP, and we need to bring their voices to the floor.” - Helen Clarkson, CEO, Climate Group Yesterday at #COP29, the #Under2Coalition General Assembly brought together 25 subnational leaders to discuss how they’re implementing climate action in their region. Subnational governments are setting high ambitions and show what global leadership should look like - crucial ahead of 2025 where all signatories to the Paris Agreement upgrade their 5-year climate plans (Nationally Determined Contributions). States and regions are working together to push for climate action and support local communities, and it’s crucial we provide them with the financing and resources they need to meet their local, and therefore national, climate goals. Find out more about our work with subnational governments: https://lnkd.in/dSEtEai Climate Group acts as secretariat of the Under2 Coalition, the largest network of subnational governments committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2050 - or earlier.
