Transforming the lives of all those affected by childhood trauma

About us

Our work transforms the lives of all those affected by childhood trauma, through specialist therapeutic services. Our belief is that we have something special that we want to share with others and from which many could benefit. Founded in 1948, we are proud of our strong Therapeutic Community heritage and continue to build on how it informs our practice and services, enhancing the links between; Practice, Teaching and Research. The heart of the charity’s practice expertise is The Mulberry Bush School in Standlake, Oxfordshire. The Mulberry Bush Outreach service provides training, consultation and support to schools, care services and organisations working with challenging or vulnerable children, their families and communities. The Mulberry Bush is committed to research in therapeutic residential and foster care. MB3 (The Mulberry Bush Third Space) is located in Toddington, Gloucestershire and offers a ‘haven and reflective space’ for meaningful experiences. Visitors and colleagues recognise our systemic integrity; by that, they mean that we practise what we preach, that we’re open about the complexities of what we do; and that everyone here, from CEO to part-time gardener, plays a vital role in achieving a positive outcome for all those who come to us for help. We set up our consultancy service to help others in related sectors to do the same. We support you to uncover your ‘why’, to make it meaningful to everyone in your organisation, and to ensure its guiding presence is felt every day, in every facet of your work.

Part 3 of conversation....on Saturday it was great to see this article by rachel sylvester about Oasis Restore, a new therapeutic secure school for young offenders based on The Mulberry Bush therapeutic approach. This research acknowledged that just like the children placed at Oasis Restore, the Mulberry Bush model works with children where understanding the meaning of their behaviour is vital. Using genuine trusting relationships children can break the cycle and learn new ways of living and seeing themselves as achievers. As Christmas is fast approaching for children at the The Mulberry Bush and those in the care system. For many children in the care system christmas can be a very hard time as they are reminded of what they have lost. For these children they see many families enjoying looking around shops for presents, attending Christmas light switch ons and visits from Santa Claus. Which can bring up a number of difficult feelings for children that have lost a parent, loss of a sibling or no longer live with their parents for a whole number of reasons. It’s my first Christmas in the 52 week house although I’m not working Christmas Day I am thinking about my team and how they are feeling about working Christmas Day and how they are going to make it feel as Christmasy as possible. This looks different to everyone. Every year I have a mixed feelings around Christmas due to my personal experiences. But for these children it’s about creating a warm and loving environment where they feel safe and that someone cares about them. When they have lost a lot of hope in this world they will always remember these significant events. There are so many things you can do this Christmas to ensure children know you are thinking about them, such as writing a Christmas card, doing art activities. Having a nice hot chocolate and a chat. I’m sending my love to anyone who has been in the care system or struggles with this time of year. I want you to know I will be thinking of you 🎄❤️🩹 #chirstmas #childrenincare #love #mulberrybush

How did this happen? In the late 1990's, whilst studying for my Diploma in Social Work, I came to the The Mulberry Bush for a 100 day student placement - which was fantastic! This week I celebrated my 25yr anniversary (!!) of being employed at the charity. A number of people have asked me what has kept me here which has led me to think.... * It is never dull! * The levels of support - at times it has felt like I'm on my own but that is normally because I haven't voiced that I need some support * The opportunities to try new things and to be ambitious (the charity supported me to complete a PhD and I don't even like writing!) * The values and ethos of working together, understanding behaviour and reflection fit my personal values (even when sometimes I just want to work on my own and do it my way!) * A sense of belonging and being part of something that changes lives * The feedback that our work makes a difference * The people I work with - finding a congrats card and a plate of flapjack on my desk yesterday was just a great start to the day! Actually I think the list could go on for quite a while....So what keeps you in your job? #SocialWork #MulberryBush #UWE #Training

I had the absolute pleasure of visiting The Mulberry Bush school yesterday and what an amazing place. A therapeutic school supporting many young people. It was inspiring and humbling in so many ways. Jessica Hooper thank you so much for having me. You and the team show passion, love and dedication to make the lives of the young people you support better and that there is some calm after the storm. I can’t even put into words the difference you make in their young lives and they will remember you forever. So sad that it’s needed but so glad that you’re there.
