The Oswin Project creates second chances for people with criminal records through mentoring, training and employment.
About us
The Oswin Project creates second chances for people with criminal records across the Northeast and beyond. We provide training, mentoring, and access to employment, offering the opportunity to develop new skills, attitudes, and ultimately a new way of living. We currently operate three main initiatives: -Supported Access to External Employers: providing CV development, help to find work (including through our network of employers), assisting with disclosures, and we support people to access relevant training to secure work. -Café 16: We run a training bakery and cafe inside HMP Northumberland and a Cafe inside Newcastle Cathedral, staffed by serving prisoners and people with criminal records. -Gardening & Maintenance: a team of people providing landscaping, property maintenance, and painting and decorating services. Whatever the initiative, everyone we work with is provided with a tailored package of support and regular mentoring to suit their needs and aspirations. By supporting us, you are allowing us to break the cycle of re-offending by: - Providing support and mentoring leading to employment - Sourcing training and the opportunity to gain qualifications - Re-building confidence - Facilitating work experience - Encouraging social inclusion - Becoming a contributor to society rather than a dependent

Just reviewed "Potential Unlocked: Building a Sustainable Prison Workforce" - a compelling new report from the Prison Reform Trust that brings prisoners' voices to the critical discussion of prison officer recruitment, training and retention. Key insights from their research: - Being a good prison officer requires sophisticated skills in relationship-building, empathy, and consistent professional judgment. - The prison workforce faces major challenges with high turnover and staffing shortages. - Prisoners value officers who demonstrate basic human respect, accountability, and the ability to build rapport while maintaining appropriate boundaries. The report makes thoughtful recommendations including: - Establishing prison officer registration similar to nursing, with ongoing professional development requirements. - Involving prisoners in officer training and development. - Creating better line management and supervision structures. - Supporting activities that build staff-prisoner relationships. Most striking is how the report centers prisoners' perspectives on what makes an effective officer. As one prisoner noted: "No one understands the differences between a good and a bad prison officer better than a prisoner." Interesting read for anyone working in criminal justice reform, public policy, or organizational development. 🔍 New Ministry of Justice projections reveal critical trends in England and Wales' prison population that underscore the urgency of our work at The Oswin Project: The prison population is projected to rise from 86,038 to approximately 100,800 by March 2029, with particularly concerning growth in our aging prison population: - The over-50 population is expected to reach 18,100 by September 2028 - Currently, 18% of prisoners are aged 50+ - Significant increases expected across all age brackets 50-59, 60-69, and 70+ This data reinforces why The Oswin Project's work in providing training and employment opportunities for ex-offenders is more crucial than ever. With growing prison populations, the need for effective rehabilitation and reintegration support will only increase. These projections highlight the pressing need for: - Enhanced rehabilitation programs - Better support for older ex-offenders - Stronger employment pathways post-release At The Oswin Project, we remain committed to breaking the cycle of reoffending through meaningful employment opportunities. The growing prison population makes our work more vital than ever. https://bit.ly/3ZvXsO6 #PrisonReform #Rehabilitation #SocialImpact #EmploymentOpportunities #CriminalJusticeReform
