  • Chairman of Jardox & Jobs Foundation Business Council member, Richard Ashness, writes in The Telegraph this morning about the impact of the Government's proposed reforms to inheritance tax on farms. Richard, who employs more than 200 people, says "Smaller firms are not affected by the new tax, and I imagine that very large family-controlled firms will have clever ownership structures with which to avoid it. But, over time, many mid-sized family firms will be forced to sell. This will be a disaster for the UK, resulting in slower economic growth and reduced tax income"..."I am not making this point out of self-interest – for my family, selling the business will be a disappointment but they will still be financially secure. But for our wider family – our business colleagues – it will be a disaster, as it will be for the country as mid-sized family businesses gradually disappear". • As we continue to showcase our great network of business leaders and entrepreneurs from our Business Council, Advisory Council & the Board of Trustees – today the Jobs Foundation is delighted to share Samuel Ola's story. Samuel, who is a Loughborough Business School graduate & Co-Founder of Nestwork, is one of the many Loughborough-based entrepreneurs who spoke to Nick Tyrone during his research for 'Two Million Jobs'. On Nestwork, Sam says "Our goal is to help people find the job they want and hopefully transform their lives. A job is so vital to people’s sense of self and worth, beyond simply the importance of a pay packet. We’re hoping to build a successful company and change a lot of people’s lives for the better along the way." • In October, we celebrated the launch of our foundational research, ‘Two Million Jobs: How businesses play a crucial role in helping people from welfare into work’. After over a year of interviewing business leaders, entrepreneurs, politicians and other local stakeholders, we were delighted to finally be able to take this opportunity to share some of the inspiring stories about how businesses are crucial to giving people across all parts of the country opportunities to prosper. We were pleased that ‘Two Million Jobs’ was featured in a range of national, regional, broadcast and social media, helping set the agenda ahead of Rachel Reeves’ first Budget. To pick out some highlights, we headlined the Telegraph’s online politics section with a feature looking at how the Government can raise over £20bn in tax revenue by achieving their goal of bringing two million people back into work – with the policy recommendations of how this can be achieved through creating a more pro-business environment highlighted in the report. We were featured in City AM’s Leader column, with editor Christian May stating ahead of the Budget that the Chancellor should read ‘Two Million Jobs’ to appreciate how business is a force for good and listen to the business leaders who understand what we need to do to get our economy thriving. The Sun’s Leader referenced the report and added that the Chancellor must “wrestle” with the report as moving two million people from out of work into employment would be a “win-win”, whilst also featuring the report on the inside front page, highlighting that this would raise significant tax revenue for the Government. The BBC interviewed Nick Tyrone, and focused on how Sheffield businesses are a leading example for other businesses across the country to learn from in terms of training and employment best practice. Nick also gave a long interview to GB News on the policy implications of the report. This came alongside a host of other mentions across newspapers, op-eds in the regional and online media, and mentions on various radio stations. As the first significant piece of research conducted by the Jobs Foundation, we were delighted to receive such strong pick-up from across the media and policy landscape. Now our foundational research is launched, we will be raising our media profile to further influence the policy agenda, campaigning on ensuring that the UK has the right policy environment to allow businesses to thrive. In particular, we’re looking forward to holding the Government to account on their mission to get two million people back to work, which requires a regulatory and tax regime that encourages entrepreneurialism and private enterprise.

Chief Executive at The Jobs Foundation

Back when Matthew Elliott and I were first discussing the creation of the Jobs Foundation, one of the driving factors for doing so was our passionate belief in the power that businesses have in improving people’s lives through job creation and training. Now, a year on from our public launch, my belief in business is stronger than ever.    As our Advisory Council member Luke Johnson says, “Jobs don’t just fall from the sky – they appear because companies are created by risk takers. Jobs only exist because they are helping that business to progress. If you crush the private sector, you crush jobs. Without jobs, you don’t have civilisation.”   Over the past year, I’ve been so excited to see the growth of our Business Council, now nearing a thousand supporters, and they’ve given me the chance to travel up and down the country to visit some of the inspirational businesses that shape people’s lives. From Thatchers Cider Company Ltd in Somerset, to Pickerings Lifts in Stockton, these businesses are at the heart of their local areas, giving people opportunities that they would never otherwise have. The business leaders that form our Business Council are a constant reminder of how we must cherish businesses for their contribution, and how we need to give the support to business leaders and entrepreneurs that they deserve to create even more opportunities for people.    If you’re an entrepreneur or business leader and share my belief in the power of business, we’d love to have you onboard our (free and private) Business Council. To join, visit the link here (https://lnkd.in/eQ2vcdcV) or comment below and one of the team will be in touch. All of our supporters can attend our events across the country, contribute to our policy and research work, as well as receive updates on our progress as we champion the cause of business.   Click here if you want to read me extol the virtues of jobs even more - https://lnkd.in/eMfWmF36

  • The Access Group is a company that takes employee happiness, progress and retention seriously. A global British software business based in the Midlands, they have over 10,000 employees around the world. But rapid growth hasn’t stopped Access keeping a strong focus on the part of the business that matters most to their success: their employees. Access is a strong case study for several of the aspects of employment good practice that we have identified in our foundational research ‘Two Million Jobs’: -      They’ve created a friendly office culture – a place where people want to work – and active team building is recognised as an important part of staff happiness. -      The company is strongly interconnected with local institutes for higher education – with routes into the company directly from Loughborough College, apprenticeships on offer, and their global HQ located in Loughborough University’s Science and Enterprise Park. -      Perhaps most importantly, Access creates clear paths to advancement for their employees and have made internal promotion a big part of the company’s culture. You can read all of our findings about employment best practice and discover the many other inspiring businesses we met with in our full report: https://lnkd.in/eDpHd6KD With our thanks to Jonathan Jorgensen, Ben Whitehead and everyone at the Access Group who gave their time to help us with our research.
